(minor spoilers for the TV show..but I guess that's assumed on this board?)

I've almost finished watching the Firefly reruns on Space, and of course am anxious for more adventures in this universe. If the movie goes ahead (and I'm not getting my hopes up that it will actually happen), Joss et al will have a tough decision on how to handle the story.

They will want to speak to fans of the TV series, but unfortunately there's not a huge number of us. If viewer numbers weren't good enough for Fox to keep it on the air, then I find it hard to believe anyone would bankroll a film aimed mainly at those fans. I'm sure there will be a lot of pressure to make the movie accessable to people who didn't watch the show.

The way I see it, there are three ways they can approach it.

1. "Re-launch" the story, ignoring the TV series and introducing us to all the characters again. Of course, this will alienate many fans, but will make the movie more accessable to everyone else.

2. Don't ignore the TV series, but don't explicitly reference events in it either. Film it in such a way that the TV series is not contradicted, but new fans won't need to have seen the original shows. This will mean less reference to continuity, and it will be a stand-alone adventure of the Firefly crew.

3. Explicitly reference events and characters from the TV show (Saffron, Jayne's almost betrayal, blue hands, Niska, etc.) and to hell with those who never saw it.

Like most fans I'm hoping for 3, suspecting it might be 2, and dreading that it could be 1. Any ideas?

There was an interview listed on firefly support before it went down that mentioned the movie would follow up a bit more with the River storyline. I imagine that there will need to be a touch of 'recap' for the non-fans but not a lot I suspect. Hopefully the movie dose well enough to justify another or two. Would be nice to get a film to cover the book story line as well, then maybe get back to more generic films, just long episodes more or less.

I had the impression they'd go the River story route, too. You can throw in the rebels who helped Simon spring River, explain the Blue Hands conspiracy, and maybe what Blue Sun has to do with it all. This tactic would only require a little background that we already know and then you're into new territory. The story would be suitably epic and larger-than-life, since Joss has said that that's what the script he's writing focuses on.

That said, I'm becoming quite pessimistic that the movie will be made. If it doesn't, I'm going to be as bitter as Mal was in Serenity and go around for like, forever, muttering "It doesn't mean a damn thing" (from OIS and probably not accurately quoted).

Ever wonder if Joss lurks here sometimes to see how close we are getting with our speculations to his "vision" for the upcoming movie?

What if he does, and somehow we've stumbled onto the right path a few times, and Joss has decided to change the movie because he wants it to be a surprise?

TALONPEST

I'm guessing it will essentially pick up where the show left off. There will almost certianly be a new character added in who may or may not be killed off by the end of the film, but will need to be introduced to everyone, which will allow the non-TV audiance to get to know everyone as well.

I'm pretty sure Joss has said that the plot will involve Reavers, but I'm guessing that it will also have River at the forefront. My hypothesis is that the Blue Hand Group will chase Serenity, and they'll have to run into Reaver territory to get away. Then River will lay the psychic smack-down on some Reaver ass, reading minds and messing with them, and then closing her eyes and blasting away at a few dozen of them.

Crap, it’s our fault that we have to wait so long for the movie. Bad Browncoats, bad!

MYSTERION

I think, IMO, that there needs to proably be a balance between options 2 and 3.

To totally re-launch the characters and their situations proably would alientate a lot of us who have followed this thing from the beginning.

I think there could be a way to write the feature so it introduces the characters to new folks at the same time continuing their journey for the rest of us.

Look at "Out of Gas", for example. It was more-or-less in the middle of the series. It continued the story, gave background for newer viewers, and that backgorund also served to make those continuing viewers that much MORE familiar with them.

IMO. YMMV.

SERGEANTX

I can't quote, but I remember reading some interview answers from Joss where he indicated #2 above was the plan. Some of us on here had discussed the idea of a prequel. I liked the idea quite a bit, maybe something showing how Simon saved River or stories of Mal and Zoe after the war. But it wouldn't really be the same Firefly in that case since it wouldn't include the tenth character(Serenity).

I do remember Joss saying the intent was to make a stand alone movie, not an extension of the series. He basically said that no major movie studio would be interested in financing a movie that was obviously a continuation of a TV series, especially one cancelled after half a season. But he then went on to say ( in so many words ) that that's exactly what they'd be doing.

Thought of that often, but I doubt it.
First off, if anything he comes up with even smells like something from here, Joss could be sued for copyright infringment, publically embarrassed, and have his credibility destroyed. I think to avoid future legal problems, Joss does not lurk.

Second, any time I think I have figured out just what Joss is gonna do, I get surprised. No matter what we come up with here, Joss has shown an ability to do so much better, so often, that I don't think any of us are right anyway.

LOL, that can't be worse than when Tim popped in, said "I know what Inara is running from. " and never followed up!
