Does anyone know what type of pistol Mal's handgun is based on?
Is it a real gun?
If it isn't is there a retailer or distributer from which i could purchase a replica?

Thanks,
gerbal

I have often wondered about his hand gun myself. It's not a revolver but looks like one. And its size looks like it would not carry much ammunition. I have never seen any example like it before. I think they just created it for the show. Everyone else seems to carry conventional looking hand guns.

I like Zoe's short lever action rifle. Reminds of one Steve McQueen used in TV series many years ago. Forget the title of that show. But I'm sure some in this verse someone knows. And maybe someone knows about Mal's hand gun too.

Mal's pistol is based off of the Remington 1860 revolver, although has a modified housing, I believe it still olds 6 rounds, as seen during the landing scene in the movie.

Zoe carries a sawed off Winchester lever action rifle.

and Jayne's pistol is a modified Lemat. Possibly one of the coolest guns ever made. Its a revolver with an 8 round cylinder, as well as a hold-out style 12-gauge shotgun cylinder beneath the main .357 barrel.

Steve McQueen or Chuck Connors? Chuck used a modified lever action 30-30 in "The Rifleman," however the modification was only to the lever, and not the length of the barrel.

Zoe's gun was based off of a Winchester 30-30 it was changed slightly as in it's now a pistol instead of a rifle. Mal's pistol is a future revolver much more powerfull than any revolver now. Look at what it did to the operative in the movie.

I finally got of my dead and googled Steve McQueen.

He did a TV show called "Wanted Dead or Alive."
I completely forgot the title, but the image of him with that sawedoff winchester stayed with me.

I doubt they used they same rifle because this show dates back to 1958. Now I'm aging myself.
See what web site does to me. Now you know I'm old as dirt.

But there was McQueen holding that rifle when I went into his filmography. May not have many braincells left, but the few I have still function to provide worthless trivia.

So Mal's hand gun was altered. I guess it is a one of a kind then. To bad. I'm sure a lot of people would like to own one.

Zoey's rifle is based off of (it's close, but not exact) the one Steve McQueen used.
Take a look at Clint Eastwood in "The Outlaw Josie Wales". That's the basis for Mal's gun and parts of the character. It's in keeping with the honorable (despite what others may think) guy from the wrong side of the Civil War / Wild West theme that Joss went after.
I'll defer to others on the exact models, but the old Army and Navy revolvers from the US civil war are good places to start looking.

You know, I would have sworn there was a thread here re: Mal's gun, with models, specs, etc...along with a link to be able to purchase a resin replica...

Actually, Mal's pistol was a build-up around a modified Taurus Model 65 (although almost any N-frame pistol will work.
This is a picture from the company that actually built the pistol:

All of this came from this thread:
http://www.therpf.com/index.php?showtopic=89945&hl=mal%20pistol

It was not based on any one "real" gun, although elements of several older pistols are visible.

Hope that helps!

There's a fantastic article all about Mal's pistol in Volume one of the "Firefly - The Official Companion" book which is released in the US on September 30th. :)

EDIT: ...according to Amazon, although I've heard a couple of people say that they already have a copy. I'm confused!

Harry.

I agree, the shape of the barrel, frame and grip resemble one of the civil-war era Colt Navy revolvers. Haven't done the research but I would guess a replica could be found to use as a base (if one wanted to have a go at making their own).

I think it might be available in the UK already. How'd you find out about the pistol thing?
