Announced today, beginning June 13, Sci Fi will begin a new series devoted to a WWE spinoff league, Extreme Championship Wrestling...in the hopes of getting the same ratings lift that USA network has gotten from WWE's Raw....
I'm sure there are those who enjoy watching this stuff (i'll never understand why), ... but please, on Sci Fi... let's just call it what it is... The Sell-Out Network...

Now I am learning about scary.

Okay, I just looked at my calendar and it doesn't appear to be April 1 so ... are you SERIOUS?

I realize that wrestling is way out there, but the SciFi Channel? I don't think so. How sad.

Well, in the sense that nothing's real in pro wrestling...okay. If you stand on your head and squint, wrestling can fit on the Sci Fi channel, as "fantasy".

But ...whatinthenameofbrightbluefuckall...

This particular department of the whole NBC telefamily must really be struggling financially.

Obviously, we don't have many rasslin bufss round here...

ECW is an old federation that went defunct a while back. Back in the day, there used to be the "big three", WWF (Now WWE), WCW and ECW. ECW was the smallest and most often unaired due to it's content which for the record is 20 times better than anything the WCW or WWF/WWE has ever shown. ECW is where a good majority of wrestlers in the big leagues got their start, including but not limited to Mick Foley and Steve Austin.

I'm not sure if this is gonna be the same ECW, but if it is, then I might actually start watching again.

I'm not a fan, but i have been to a couple of live events with some friends, (one of them was very into it)... and it was fairly entertaining..more or less depending on how many beers you'd had beforehand... but what you see up close is just how fake it all is... it's just a staged show... I'm sure not saying that i want to get into the ring with some these guys.. i have no doubt that people can hurt you if you don't know the act..

i remember one match... these dudes were supposed to be arch enemies... they hated each others guts, right... well, later that night after the "fight"... a cop pulls over a car driven by one of the wrestlers (don't remember the stage names..), and there in the seat right next to him, chugging a beer was his sworn nemesis... they must have come to some sort of agreement....

i'm sorry SciFi has to do this to stay afloat.. i've enjoyed quite a lot of the programming on that network... but they will be losing me with this move...

No worse than some of the "movies" they've been showing. I'm sure Mammoth had by far the highest ratings of them, and just because of Firefly fans wanting to see Summer.

There are some good shows, such as BSG and Doctor Who, but it seems that every time I switch over there is either a horrible movie or some Stargate rerun on.

A friend of mine applied for a job in programming and got to hear all about their new "broad-based initiative" to bring in more main stream viewers. WTF? Cable is rapidly becoming a niche market and the most established commercial niche is the SF market, why are they screwing with it? The programming HAS been going down hill and it's only going to lose them loyal viewers and the mainstream with stay away no matter what due to the "SF Stigma". They might as well make their core audience happy.

Unless it's robots wrestling with big chainsaws, I'm changing the channel.

They already did that once. I think it was called Mad, Mad House, or something to that effect.

For those that have been watching Sci-Fi for the past eight years or so, we're all well aware of the boneheaded decisions they're capable of making.

*cough, Good Vs. Evil, First Wave, Invisible Man, The Chronicle, Farscape, cough*

That being said, however, I am somewhat surprised that they would sink to this level. If anyone's familiar with the current state of WWE wrestling, then you know what a god-awful move this is. So much for quality programming.

Would you expect Nathan Fillion and Mark Shepherd not to share a beer because Malcolm Reynolds and Badger are enemies? The "wrestling is fake" arguement is done to death, kayfabe died in the late 90's and even the wrestlers don't kid themselves anymore. Just stage actors in a different kind of show.

This much is true: WWE is crap. TNA wrestling is where it's at right now. That being said, anyone who knows what ECW was knows that there is potential in it being brought back, especially if they put Paul Hayman in charge again and bring back some true greats. Rob Van Dam, Sabu, Tommy Dreamer... unfortunately, a lot of these guys are and have been retired for some time, but ECW is the house that they built, and the freedom that was alloted to them and everyone in that company was paramount to exactly why it was a superior brand of entertainment.

I would urge anyone who thinks that they "know" what pro-wrestling is to check out a couple of these links.

- Sabu vs. Terry Funk
Terry Funk was nearly 50 years old at the time of this match, and learned how to do a backflip (moonsault) specifically to show that you can teach and old dog new tricks. Sabu... one of the craziest wrestlers of all time. There's a part of this match where Sabu gets dropped crotch first on a barbed wire rope... and yes, it's REAL blood, and REAL barbed wire.

The Dudley Boys vs. Sandman and Tommy Dreamer. Just a bunch of rough and tumble guys, lots of beating each other senseless with hard objects. Dudley Boys also do some nice double team moves.

- This is where pro-wrestling crosses from huge brutes mutilating each other into a legitimate stage performance. Light weight match between two very agile guys known as Super Crazy and Tajiri. Very acrobatic with some flashy looking martial arts.

I tried like hell to locate this one clip where Cactus Jack (Mick Foley) and Terry Funk beat Public Enemy in a tag team match. The match wasn't the best part. The best part was that at the end, when Public Enemy is laid out in the middle of the ring, Terry Funk request a chair from the audience. One fan throws him a chair. Then two more fans. Then five more. Then the ENTIRE CROWD proceeds to hurl steel chairs into the ring, completely burying Public Enemy in a mound of steel. The ring announcer, Joey Styles, was pleading the entire time for them to stop... oh man, that was freggin hilarious.

I don't have a problem with TV wrestling in general. The gladiators of the Roman culture weren't all that different, when you think about it (except that wrestlers don't set out to actually kill each other these days...I think). Just because I find it personally distasteful doesn't mean I'm going to burn someone else who enjoys it.

But Sci-Fi Channel? Please...

There are plenty of actual Science Fiction shows that they could be putting on there that would draw just as many people...Firefly (duh...), maybe Star Trek (I think it's G4 that's doing something with that now), Twilight Zone, Lost in Space...the list goes on.

Having said that, I will say that I'll continue to watch SciFi for one reason- Ghosthunters. Anybody with me on that one?

Seems like Sci-Fi is doing what other specialty channels are doing--trying to increase revenue. Like G4 showing Fastlane, the Man Show and Star Trek--I like the shows, but on a gaming network? And now wrestling on Sci-Fi? Next thing you know, they'll be showing reality shows on educational networks like A&E and the Discovery Channel.

I think TNA is pretty good, but ROH (which has some of the same guys as TNA is much better. Unfortunately, they don't have a TV deal, but they are the best wrestling going today.

As far as ECW being on the SCI-FI channel, WWE signed a deal with NBC Universal where any new programming (Smackdown was already in existence) had to be on an NBC Universal network. That left NBC, USA, Bravo, and Sci-fi. NBC obviously passed, as the Saturday Night's Main Event they showed in March was an abysmal failure. USA declined because they already had Raw. That left it to Bravo or Sci-fi. Bonnie Hammer (I believe that is her name) was instrumental in the WWE coming to NBC Universal and is no running Sci-fi network and wanted it there. Supposedly it only has a summer deal, and unless the ratings are good , will not be renewed in the fall.

I liked the old ECW, but this won't be the old ECW. WWE owns it now, and WWE is getting smothered by one of the worst cases of nepotism I have ever seen. Vince McMahon has put his untalented daughter in charge of writing, and I suspect she will have influence in the ECW writing, which will make the new ECW a poor product, and it will probably go away from teh Sci-fi network in a few months.

All valid points, but I think it at least deserves a chance. I think the very fact that McMahon's so busy with crap might mean that he'll leave ECW affairs to Paul Haymen and other old ECW suits.

Course, I haven't watched wrestling in at least 4 years. I have no clue if Heyman is even still in the WWE. I'm just hoping and willing to give this a shot. If it tanks... oh well, I still got my video tapes. I just don't want to condemn it before it begins. I did that one time with this strange movie called "Serenity"...

Well, I actually caught a little bit of Sci-Fi's first ECW event, which by the way was NOT on June 23rd.

So, it begins out pretty cool. They bring back all the greats, The Sandman, Balls Mahoney, Tommy Dreamer and the fucking king of it all, SABU! Tazz even steps up and does something besides announcing, chokes out Jerry Lawler, good times. Still, I miss him suplexing the shit out of everything and everyone he can get his hands on.

Then, it was inevitable, it starts going downhill. They make a former ECW world champ, Justin Credible, job to fucking Kurt Angle like a bitch. Then Big Show comes in and tears the entire ECW roster to hell. It's like the WWE's saying, "Yeah, ECW was good, but they don't have REAL athlete like us!". And lemme tell ya, that's EXACTLY the type of message I want in a SCRIPTED FUCKING PERFORMANCE. Ah well, at least Sabu won the battle royale.

Oh, and what the hell was with the blond stripped? Is pro-wrestling using sex to advertise now!? I am shocked an appauled that they would sink to this level to try and gain a reputation. Speechless. Totaly speecless. NEVER BEFORE have I seen WRESTLING try to use SEX to sell it's product. It's just so disgusting...

Seriously though, stupid bitch couldn't even get her bra off during the strip tease. The only thing she has to do for a paycheck is get undressed, and she can't even do that. HA!

So, all in all, I'd give ECW's comeback a 7 out of 10. With everyone they got, I think it's got potential to regain it's glory, but Paul Heyman needs to have head creative control.

-----------------------------------------------
They say I am a sinner and seducer, they try to put the blame on me, but I don't give a fuck for the way they see.

I urge the TIVO nation to tell Sci-Fi channel what you think of wrestling on the channel...

"The Old 3 Thumbs Down!"

All cable channels get reports from TIVO about thumbs up / thumbs down programming and reports that tells them when TIVO customers actually record various shows.

I may be one voice...but I'm one voice with my thumb firmly on the thumbs down button. Wrestling does not belong on the Sci-Fi channel.

Here's what Jayne has to say to the president of the Sci-Fi channel:

"Have you ever been with a Warrior Woman?"
