Hey, I was just wondering if anyone knows if I can like, download the cellphone game for my computer. I love Joss Whedon so much that it would pain me to pirate it, so please tell a legal way to buy it for my computer, as i am DIEING to play cheap junk with the serenity seal of approval on it!

GetItNow has a game called Serenity-Renegades, I've been thinking about downloading. the thing is I'm not sure about the payment plan, it says $5.00 for a subscription or $8.00 for unlimited. I'm not sure if the unlimited is just a one time payment or a monthly thing. Do you know anything about the GetItNow payment plans?

Funny thing.

A little while back I was working on a generic engine for a game of this type (highly modible, cross-platform, etc). Got put down due to work and such.

But, lately I've been thinking about which project to start up again and got asked by someone I know to continue this one. Development was to start up again sometime this week.

Would there be a demand for something like this in the community? Should I post my progress? etc?

Sorry to ruin the fun, but to be honest the serenity game is not particularly good. Infact it couldn't have less to do with serenity if it tried. The only thing that makes it firefly is the name of it and the fact that the little ship you fly looks like Serenity.
I love Firefly and the BDM as much as anyone here, but I can't say I would recommend the game.

Well, that's just a huge subjective statement now isn't it.

The fact of the matter is I've visited several sites and they all give good reviews. Also, all the customer reviews are ~7/10 and better. So, clearly there is a good number of people that disagree with you.

Well, this wasn't exactly my thought, but I am wondering how they justify the whole having a gun thing on Serenity.

But, then again, I did exactly find the movie Firefly either. So, IMO, all's fair with entertainment, when it comes to this franchise. Feel free to disagree if you like, I'm not going to argue this point... again.

But, it'd be nice to know what people thought of my little project. Do people here like scrollers? etc. *references above questions*

Fair enough, I just felt cheated by its lack of Serenityness. For example the main style of the game is based arond shooting or hiding. The hiding part makes sense but the shooting part? As far as I remember there was only alittle bit of shooting in space from Serenity (badly worded but you know what I mean).

I entirely agree. There does seem to be a lack of Serenityness. Like you say, the shooting part doesn't exactly fit.

The game does seem to be quite neat in its own right though (minus the Serenity/Firefly ties). So, that's how I gather it gets the high rating.

Now, this brings up something that I'd like to know (from you and everybody). Does Serenity/Firefly fit a scroller type game well? If so, how would it go?

It's just that I'm about to come into untold amounts of free time, and I'm a programmer. So, I'd kinda like to do something that at least has a chance of doing something for this community.

My review is posted at http://www.serenitystuff.com/2006/01/11/serenity-renegades-mobile-game. There are several sites you can downlaod the game from, and you should be able to buy it through your cellphone's multimedia browser (if your model of phone can play it).

The higher price you mentioned is for as long as you have it on your phone. If you replace the phone or buy a different one, you'll have to buy the game again. However, if you plan to play it for longer than a month it's worth the higher initial price.

The short version is that it's a top-down shooter, very reminiscent of the old-style arcade games. And yep, Serenity has guns. Also shields and missiles.

It's not a bad game. You get little photo-and-text vignettes from the movie in between levels, and it's fun watching Serenity weave back and forth. I justify the guns by treating it as the game Wash played in his mind when no one was looking.

BTW - if you do program a Serenity game, any chance of it porting to a Palm? I don't mind playing on the phone but the screen is so tiny. I'd love to see something on my larger T|E screen.

The old text game Tai-Pan game would be more in line with Serenity; fly to different worlds, sell what you have, buy up more stuff, go sell it elsewhere and try to profit. Just add in some violence and double-dealing and there you go...

Just a little backround. I rented serenity and fell in love with it. A friend let me borrow firefly and I promptly watched them and then watched serenity again. I will be purchasing firefly and serenity shortly. On another hand I too am a programmer and very interested in game programming. I would love to help develop a firefly vid game!! :) Let me know and I'm sure there are others that would love to help too.

This is all shiny and happy, but i think you have missed my original question: Is there a way to play the game without a million dollar cellphone?

@Forcebar:
Shiny. Nice to know that there are others around that are willing and able.

The only problem is coming up with an viable project. This might be one...

@FireflySadist:
Does not seem so. At least, I couldn't find any reference to it on anything but the cell phone.

But, that is part of why I mentioned that I was writing a scroller engine. I could do that and then someone could put in the content to make it a Firefly/Serenity game.

Just would like to know if that is something that people wanted. Don't want to waste my time on doing something that people won't play.

Sorry if this was at all confusing. I'm about to fall over from the tired.

I was looking through the archives, and I just noticed that I didn't answer this question. Sorry

The way I am programing my scroller, I don't think that it'd be possible. It's currently being programed in Python using Pygame which doesn't run on the Palm.

Not to mention that I think I may have a much shiny'er project to do. Yes, Firefly related
