I saw some things on this site about a Firefly game mod for UT2004, but the site looks dead.

However, having recently had a crack at a few different mods for the game Transcendence, I think it should be possible to put one together.

The game in question was designed to be easily moddable using very basic XML editing, has a small file size and is available for free. However, it's a fantastic game, and has some good smuggling/trader/freelancer aspects.

The site is:
http://www.neurohack.com/transcendence/index.html

It's a 2D space-based RPG/shooter. The 2D aspect means the graphics are relatively easy to edit, and I've created new items and ships while having no prior knowledge of XML.

I plan on starting simple with a replica Serenity player ship, and seeing how it goes. Does anyone on this site have a 3D graphic of Serenity?

To avoid the mod getting "foxed", I'll use subtle renaming along the lines of the UT2004 "Star Wars" mod Troopers: Dawn of Destiny. They renamed every item, faction etc.

Nice idea, but (IMHO) only worthy game in the 'verse would be something that looks like Knights Of The Old Republic, with full ship interior, vast expanses to traverse, multiple planets to visit and limitless character development possibilities... It is my opinnion that only RPG can truly capture FIrefly's spirit. Turning it into a shooter or anything else would ruin it...
Yes, when I think of it, only KOTOR looks like something worthwhile...
Remember - FF taught us that there is quality in sci-fi. No need to lower our standards here

Ah, perhaps an explanation.
I was planning on setting the game in the civil war 6 years before the series.

"Remember - FF taught us that there is quality in sci-fi. No need to lower our standards here"

Well, yes there is, really, at least if you mean "quality" as "complexity and fancy graphics". You're thinking of a full big-budget game. I'm thinking a simple series of mods, on a free game, possibly leading to a total conversion. That means using what I know and the program will support (so no fancy cutscenes etc)

Simple doesn't mean low gameplay quality. Try playing a few really good Flash games.
However, lend me a game studio and a few grand and I'll go with your plan!

The game I want to mod is mostly a shooter, but could be given a Firefly feel by using the war against the Alliance as the time period. I'm planning a Firefly ship and items for it anyway.

Unlike a KOTOR look-alike, a bunch of fans could do this without needing a team of coders and a large bankroll. I helped put together a Red Dwarf ship and item set for Transcendence a while back, but we didn't have anyone who could make custom graphics for it.

That's why I was posting here instead of just on the game's mod forums. Thought there'd be a few Browncoats who'd think it'd be fun to make a mod without having to be experts.

no problem with that - I wanted to say that my flavour of a firefly game would be something in the lines of kotor
Also, you can mod kotor...there are utils available, all we need is free time :/
And there are some great utilities out there that help you make your own games... No need for a big buget there
In any case, if you make something, post a link so we can play it
