In your educated opinions...did the feature film profit enough for someone to take notice of the living being that is the "firefly" and give it a second chance?

with a 39 million dollar budget...was the movie profittable enough for the bigwigs? obviously the box office values will have to be augmented by DVD sales and the ensuing increase of firefly box set sales...

in other words, aside from the obvious fanbase...will a network profit from the show's return? especially with major characters like Wash and Book being killed off in Serenity

ummm...maybe?

I think most folks are a little talked-out on the speculation without new developments, but you can certainly find a lot of discussion on the matter if you browse through the archived threads here.

And, noticing this is your first post, let me say... Welcome.

Gacox,

It's getting late but I didn't want to miss greeting you and I wanted to hand you a Browncoat

*hands Gacox a Browncoat*

As for speculation about has it made enough?

Heavens, I hope so! As NoSadSeven said, there's lots of threads archived here where the numbers are bandied about and judgements are made. I honestly can't tell yet.

I'm just gonna hold 'til Mal comes back.

I heard on the other forum that some more comics have been greenlighted... and while I like that and it's very shiny, I want a BDSequel! I love seeing this crew up on the big screen. Then I'd like a continuation of the series... or not necessarily in that order, it can be flipped about.

Hope you enjoy this place as much as I do, it's home. So... welcome home.

" You hold. Hold til I get back." Mal

From what we do know, no Serenity did not make a profit though I think it is definitely close in breaking even. In time, though, Serenity will make a profit from DVD sales and merchandising. Problems is if the bigwigs think that time isn't too slow. Remember a lot of franchises have done so. As of right now, Universal isn't going to make a sequel but they are probably going to let this simmer for a few years. Then they will look at overall sales and profits and then take into account if the fanbase and common knowledge of it as grown enough in those years to warrant a sequel.

On the off chance Universal might pass on a sequel all together and allow the making of a new series but then you have to deal with Fox. 20th Century Fox still owns the TV rights so they would have to make it (which gives Fox Broadcasting first dibs) or sell it to another production company. Then a network would have to want to pick it up and want to air it.

I think chances are good that we will see Serenity/Firefly reincarnated in some form but it won't be in the near future as many hope and many will flame me for after this post.

I've been here since before the movie and a little after the series ended originally and I know it took about three years for Serenity and that was rushed. We will be lucky if we see anything of TV and Movie wise in the next 5 years.

In that time though, we have more books and comic books coming out as well as more roleplaying stuff so we still have stuff coming. Just not in the format that everyone wants.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Let's not forget that Pitch Black -- another movie that didn't go gangbusters at the theater but became a sleeper hit on DVD -- sat in its own juices for several years before getting the sequel made. And it didn't have a simply fabulous TV series with which to build a fanbase before even getting made.

So, while I don't think we'll get instant gratification on this one, I cannot conceive of them NEVER making another. It's too much a sure thing -- even just with the current fanbase -- to just die out.

*crosses fingers*

I completely agree. Here's to hoping that the third time will be the charm whether it be a movie or a new series.
