Okay, I thought if I hung around for a little while I would figure this out, but it's been a few weeks and I'm still at a loss. Why is it "Flan" and "Flanvention" rather than fan? Google just gives me multiple uses of the phrase, or recipes for flan. Little help, please?

AMITON

Hey, welcome Ninah!

As lore has it (at least what I heard) Flan was a verbal flub made by Nathan Fillion when trying to say "Firefly fans" at a convention some time ago (was it Dragon*Con?), and the phrase just stuck =) Even if that ends up not being true, I like the story, it's the one I know, and I'm sticking with it, so nyah!!

Amiton.

I have seen that interview, can't point you to it, though, and he does indeed fumble the words firefly fans into fireflyflans.

So our beloved Captain has named us well.

Hi Nina, the quote comes from an interview Nathan did while hob-knobbing at the shindig premiere for the movie "In Good Company" over a year ago (he's wearing a kilt by the way!). Summer and Morena and Alan were also in attendance and did great interviews too. You can see them here:

Note that the sound quality of the interviews is really sketchy in places. Also, I hope you have a fast internet connection to see the clips; if not, I'll try to figure out the 'hidden' links for you to (slowly) download the (rather large) interview clips.

Like everybody's said, Welcome!

Rumor has it that Nathan Fillion messed up saying Firefly fans and came out with Flans and ever since a group of fans have used that as their name for the fanbase rather than using Browncoats. Some fans, especially some in Europe, feel that Browncoats comes far to close to Brownshirts (a name for NAZIs) and prefer to us Flans instead. Don't blame them since you don't want to be thought of as being NAZI even if it isn't true.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Flan is also a hispanic desert in many latin countries and is made of primarily sugar and custard with a sweet sugary sauce.

Woops, wrong flan. Now I want some.
