As I was watching the demise of Arrested Development on the much beloved Fox network, it suddently occurred to me that the higher ups at this esteemed network may be wiser than we think.

Intelligent, original programming is off-putting for the general public. In order to reach a wider audience (read, lowest common denominator) a property must sometimes compromise its superfluous components, for example, character and wit.

Which is why I am proposing the following changes to the Firefly franchise. As the network stated, Firefly is too grim and contains characters who lack a certain cuddly edge. This will all change with the airing of:

Joss Whedon's Firefly Babies

The Premise: Mal's Mom, unable to support her ranch in the face of growing Alliance interference, opens a daycare for juvenile delinquents. She hires a youthful and mysterous Book (who, in a nod to toddler perspective, is represented by a pair of massive legs)as a caregiver for little Mal, Zoe, Kaylee, Wash, Jayne, Inara and the embryonic Simon and River.
The group have a series of wacky adventures pitting themselves against the snooty alliance summer camp in the next valley.

Of particular interest will be episode 17 "Memories", in which the gang is trapped in a walk in freezer with an alliance cadet played by special guest star Wil Wheaton, and relive their favourite moments from earlier in the seaon. Complication ensue, just before commercial, when Mal finds out Jayne has killed and eaten Wil Wheaton.

Well, its a little rough, but Fox ate this up when I proposed it. Really they just suggested the inclusion of Sinbad as a the wacky upstairs neighbour.
