just out of personal curiousty...

If book was an operative, what would his weaponry be like?

I'd assume that all operatives would not all be alike, but have their own individual quirks (or would they?)

Perhaps he used a conventional weapon or a high tech one, like a laser. Or maybe he used a classic .45, because of similar pompus reasons like The Operative from Serenity had.

What do you all think?

I was tossing around the prospect of of creating an image of Book as an operative.

Yeah, the idea of an operative seems somewhat autonomous from normal Alliance operations, training, standards, etc. That leaves much up to the individual operative.

I don't really picture Book with a sword. He did seem very comfortable with the rifle in "War Stories"though.

I would say that he was a long ranged type. Look at objects in space, if he was as melee as the op in the movie, he would have heard the bounty hunter comming and would have been able to fight back. But Book, Book didn't see him until he was hit. And (as was said) he was pretty comfortable with that rifle. I'm guessing he was a sniper type. Just my two cents.

he had a shotgun in war stories. I don't care who you are Book, River, or Jesus Christ, you can't hit someone with a long rifle while shooting from the hip if he's running at you.

Um, yeah, rednecks watch Firefly too.
