Hey all. Just wondering if there are any kindred souls in the Phila, PA zone with whom I might commiserate, discuss eps, etc. I'm afraid that, while sympathetic up to a point, the wife never became a convert as such (probably a kindness, as things have [so far!] turned out), and has probably had it up to *here* with all my gorram palaver about this show.

I'm not from the Philly area, from North Jersey (not so north that I'm snow bound all the time though) I'm about 1/2 an hour from NYC. But I cordially invite you to the East Coast Shindig where I'm sure other Philly brown coats will be.

WASH: Psychic, though? That sounds like something out of science fiction.
ZOE: We live in a space ship, dear.
WASH: So?

Well, there's me (a lurker up until right now), and my girlfriend. It's nice to know we're not the only Browncoats in the area.

Shiny! Glad to "meet" you in the world! Especially since I'm not like to be able to make it to AC, where the last bit of agreement seemed to have settled for a Shindig venue. Are y'all in Philly proper?

Yeah, we're in the northwestern neighborhood of Mt. Airy, and we both work in Center City. You?

Live and play in Art Museum area. Work mostly in Buck's County, near New Hope (and there's a fun commute, let me tell you!), and one day in Norristown (I'm a shrink, BTW). Always curious about what other BCs do; what's your gig?

Oh, and Persephone, where's Johnstown again?

Ah, the dreaded "What do you do?" question. With luck, it won't be too long before I can answer with "I'm a writer", but for now I'm a failed student ("failed" as in "left", not "failed" as in "wasn't good enough") and a part-time retail clerk. Jenny (the aforementioned Browncoat girlfriend) has a Bachelor's Degree in English Lit. from Bryn Mawr and works an office job for a large plastics company.

Shiny! Wordsmiths (the rest is just details and detours). Retail's as good a place as any for gathering character studies (said the Bloomingdale's veteran...and, of course, my current line is as good a source of composite [confidentiality, y'know!] characters as ever there was!). And office work does so speed up the typing (helps for theses/dissertations!). Is your writing genre-like stuff? Are you as humbled as I by the seemingly effortless and spontaneous dialogue in our beloved FF? ('case you couldn't tell, I dabble a bit my-own-self [feel free to check out www.futureshocks.com for my freshman short novel, "Night Music." Giggles optional]).

Shameless plug for trs-80's DVDs, by the way. Really tide one over for the Official Set. And at $25, they're a tribute as much to his generosity as to his technical prowess (BTW, never met the guy, and I'm not getting compensated )

Pushing the limits of my nocturnal week-day ways. Nice matching orbits with you!

Ta;

Toby

New Castle?!?

I live right over the line, in Elkton. Literally, right over the line. The Welcome to MD sign is about 50 ft from my door!

My brother used to live in Scotch Hills Apts, right near there. Between 273 and 40, over there. I graduated from UD, been in the area for 6 years now. You guys coming to the East Coast Shindig?

There really is no better time to observe a person than when he or she is hunting for something he needs or, better yet, wants. Well, maybe during psychoanalysis. Sadly, though, that requires various advanced degrees -- and that requires being able to attend college for more than a month before being too frustrated with the people, the atmosphere, and the time-consuming nature of academic life that one just can't attend any more. So, here I am. Anyone need to buy a map?

Some yes, some no. One of my greatest fears is becoming successful and quickly being pigeonholed, and then never being able to do anything different so long as I live.

A-ha! That brings this thread niftily back on topic. (My computer is telling me "niftily" isn't a word. Harrumph.) This is a Firefly forum, after all, not a "Mat's life" forum (there's not one, by the way). Yes, I am extremely humbled by Joss and company's dialog -- and really everything else they do, too. But far more discouraging to me is how The Powers That Be -- and, in fact, the public at large -- completely failed to comprehend their brilliance. It kind of makes one wonder if it's worth it.

Now there's a cheery end to a post . . .

Hey folks, I've actually been looking to join or start up a Philadelphia Browncoats group since there doesn't seem to be one. At the very least, get to know some of the local yolkels :) Myself, I'm a grad student in the ways of molecular biology. Earning the degree in a matter of months now. Might be staying around here, which explains this little post :)

So at the very least, what do people think about a local Shindig?

I'm right outside of Philly.

You know, with the exception of one deadly and unpredictable midget, this girl is the smallest cargo I've ever had to transport, yet by far the most troublesome.
