This is a trivial detail that I have noticed. On Amazon.com, Serenity is selling for $20 when other movies that were bigger box office hits are selling for $15 like War of the Worlds, Fantastic 4, and so on.

Maybe Universal thinks that they can make a significant amount more if they sell it at $20. Maybe they are still seriously considering making a sequel. It will be interesting to see if it will be selling at this price a few weeks before and during the 1st week of its release.

I think the working theory is if they expect to sell a near infinate number of DVDs based on ticket sales the DVD starts at al low 15-$19.99, but if they expect just average sales it will list at $29.99 and usually sell on sale for around $21.

Nope, the "less popular" films sell for more money than the big box office hits. Wal-Mart and Circuit City are selling Star Wars epIII for 12.99.

Here's how it works.

Huge blockbuster movie = high volume and will be in many stores on sale for low prices, so other places need to match that price to compete.

Fairly unknown fanboy movie = multiple dvd sales to crazy fans who will buy 3 copies each and will pay pretty much anything.

Then they're going to release a super duper special edition with 20 hour of commentary and behind the scenes footage for $35 and the fans will buy again.

Remember, It was primarily the DVD sales behind Firefly that made Universal want to do the movie in the first place. THAT is where they plan on making most of their money.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I checked on another film coming out on the same day as Serenity, one that I liked but didn't do well at the box office. The Brothers Grimm has the same suggested retail price ($29.99) and amazon is selling it for the same price as Serenity ($20.99). And Napoleon Dynamite, another niche market film, one that currently is just above Serenity on the sales list, has the same price. Everything else that is selling well are higher profile blockbusters that have about the same suggested retail but are selling from 3-5 dollars less than Serenity. But even with those odds against it, Serenity is still #14 on the best-selling list, while Firefly is at #10.
