Hey, I'm a HUGE Firefly fan. Wasn't every really a Buffy or Angel fan...but HUGE Firefly fan.
Anyway, recently I read somewhere that Joss Whedon was in love with a show called Veronica Mars. I had never even heard of it, so I got the first dvd of Season 1 off of Netflix. I wasn't aware at the time that I got it from Netflix literally the day after the DVD's came out.
Anyway, I watched that first disk, and the 2nd...and before the 3rd and 4th came to my house I had purchased the box set of Season 1. I was IN LOVE with this show.
The thing that makes Joss Whedon's shows so incredibly addicting and good, are his characterizations. His characters are both real, normal, and different at the same time. They all have truth about them that we see in our lives, but at the same time they do things that we don't expect and that's why we love them.
I've discovered that Veronica Mars is the same way.
I have not really been a fan of tv for very long (only about 3 years, and I'm only 24), but in the short time that I have been a "tv-fanatic" I have watched ALOT of television shows. In that time, there are only 3 shows that ever made me NEED to watch the next episode. Those 3 shows were Alias (season 1 only pretty much), Firefly, and now; Veronica Mars.
We all know that Joss Whedon has a thing for kick-ass chicks in his tv. Well...I have not seen a kick-ass chick quite like Veronica Mars. I am a 24 year old male who was raised by women, so I'm comfortable in admitting that I like good drama and even a good romance story once in awhile (oops, there went my masculinity ).
With that said, I have to say that I actually vocally argued with this show. By that I mean I talked to the television when I was happy or uhappy with it. Any time a show evokes that kind of emotional response from me...I KNOW it's worth watching.
So...after all that, I am finally ready to explain the point of this post.
Veronica Mars could be in trouble.
They DID get a full first season and they do have a Season 2. However, so far they only have 9 episodes of Season 2 scheduled and the DVD sales of Season 1 are important to the shows future.
My request is this: If you can spare the cash, please, go buy Season 1 of Veronica Mars. You won't regret it...the show is utterly amazing.
If you can't spare the cash, sign up with Netflix for a 2 week trial for no other reason than to watch Veronica Mars (at which point, you will scrounge for the cash to buy the DVD's). (plus you get 2 more free weeks from Netflix when you cancel for the first time)
If you already have Netflix, put V-Mars in your Queu at the very top.
If you refuse to use Netflix, go to your local Blockbuster and rent it. If they don't have it, request it.
Think of all the times when you tried to get people to watch Firefly and they refused for different reasons ("I don't like Sci Fi.", "I don't have time for T.V.", "Buffy was a dumb show.", etc.)
I know that the fans of Firefly have the power to increase this show's sales enough to convince UPN to keep the show alive. We got a Firefly DVD set and a movie thanks to our dedication to that show. All I'm asking is that you guys give this show the chance it deserves.

Also, Joss Whedon himself loves this show. He has thrown Shindigs at his place just for Veronica Mars viewings. And best of all, Joss will guest star in Episode 6 of Season 2. That's a little less than 2 weeks away. I garauntee in 2 weeks, if you have watched the show, you will want to watch Episode 6 and your reasoning WON'T be to see Joss Whedon.

give it a chance folks. I'm not asking us to dedicate as much love as we did to Firefly. I'm only asking that you give it a chance (if you haven't already) and let the show convince you to love it or hate it. The DVD is hovering at #87 on Amazon (Firefly is at #6). It only came out 2 weeks ago, but this amazing show could REALLY stand to see those DVD's jump up in the list.

Thanks for hearing me out.

America loves a winner!

Buy season 1 of V.M? I might just have to do that. Much of what you said mirrrored my view of t.v. I didn't care for it much, at all. Hell, I went w/ out cable t.v. for 3 yrs, just because I was so fed up w/ it all. Then Firefly came on, and WOW! And then it went off FOX-TV!! Long story short, I started watchin' ANGEL, only to witness its cancellation as well.I became totally hooked, mainly because of the same things you mentioned..the characters. I even ordered the soundtrack CD from Angel. As for Buffy, I wasn't really all that into it when it was on, but now I plan on checking out all the seasons, eventually.

So here's how it is. I truly miss Firefly, as well as a few other choice shows. I fell in love w/ Wonderfalls, and had to buy the DVD. I'm a bit reluctant to follow a show such as V.M., because I just know that as soon as I get hooked, it'll go the way of my other favorite shows. But it sure does seem to have a strong appeal, at least from those who have very good tatse in excellent t.v.

p.s. I alternate from my NetFlix and Blockbuster memberships. Blockbuster lets me rent games for free, but I may end up back at NF. Either way, I'll give V.M. my attention.

I agree to the max. I have already seen this show and am a proud owner of the DVDs. But I caught the show for the first time now during the actual viewing season, but the reruns this summer. After the first episode I was like wow!-- exactly how I reacted after watching Firefly. Once I got to that point, I had to see more. It completely draws you in. I remember being at episode 5 and it felt like I was at ep 20, so much had seemed like it happened. I like that in a show. Everything is right in this show..the dialogue, the acting, and the plot. Its witty, and I like it. Plus, Miss Bell is a rising star.

So I agree...those of you who have not seen this amazing show, go spend the $40 or see it via Netflix. Its worth a weekend doing nothing but watching the series.

Mal: Define interesting.
Wash: Oh god, oh god, we're all gonna die?

Not only will Joss be guest starring, but, need I point out that Charisma Carpenter is a recurring character this season,a nd Alyson Hanngan was last season (and she'll be appearing this season, too)?

Plus, yeah, it's a really great show. (Though, I have to say, it's doesn't hold a candle to Buffy or Firefly...)

Here's a nice review from the Onion AVClub ( http://avclub.com/content/node/41787):
Quote:

But the best story of detection and redemption to hit the DVD shelves in recent weeks involves a high-schooler trying to clear her dad's soiled reputation and solve the murder of her best friend. Watching the six-disc Veronica Mars: The Complete First Season (Warner Bros.), it's hard to single out one defining quality that makes the Rob Thomas-created UPN series great. So here are a bunch: Joss-Whedon-sharp dialogue, beautifully realized relationships, a rare sense of class consciousness, an appealing cast, mysteries that keep their secrets, and Kristen Bell's lead performance as a smart, take-no-shit kid who's been kicked around by life and come out the wiser for it. Catch it, then jump into season two...

yeah...so I didn't want to be...but I'm as hooked on Veronica Mars as I am on Firefly...

Veronica Mars is a great show. Do yourself a favor and check out the first season on dvd. It's really good, not many extras but a fantastic show.
