Ok, my knowledge as to how the movie and TV industries work is a bit limited, but...

Seems to me the underlying problem with getting the show picked up is that there are only the few of us who know what a quality show this is. I know at least a half dozen people that I think would love Firefly if they ever got a chance to see it. (Most of them make it a rule to not watch FOX.)

So how about releasing "Serenity" to the big screen?

Since it is already made, ME doesn't have to worry about the pitching the idea to a movie studio. Without the commercials, I believe it is still long enough to qualify as a movie. If I remember correctly, isn't 20th the same company "Star Wars" was released though so they are no stranger to movie distribution. The only cost that would be incurred would be for conversion, duplication, distribution, and advertising. I suppose the only question would be whether or not the master is high enough quality to support the big screen format.

Hey, I'd go see it if it was on the big screen. This time I'd make sure I brought along my sci-fi loving friends who have no idea what "Firefly" is.

Think of it. If we could get some good reviews from the major movie critics, maybe turning it back into a TV show would be a lot easier.

Of course the real trick here is that 20th century FOX would have to convince the FOX television network to hold off rebroadcasting the show again. On the bright side, they're essentially the same company.

Hey, I'd be willing to send postcards to 20th and ME in support of this idea.

Ok, I'm probably dreaming. But it was a shiny dream.

One the one hand, you'd have a better money maker because all of the fans would pay each time they saw the movie, (I know I'd see the movie at least 5 times), and anyone that they brought with them.

On the other hand, how well do sci-fi movies do in general? I'm not saying anything against the brown coats here, but do we have the numbers of Star Wars and Star Trek fans?

Also, does Joss have experience with movies? I think he did the original Buffy movie, but that wasn't a big hit, and I'd be really scared if the movie execs took the script and made it more "marketable".

WASH: Psychic, though? That sounds like something out of science fiction.
ZOE: We live in a space ship, dear.
WASH: So?

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Well, to delude ourselves that there as many Firefly fans as there are Star Wars or Star Trek fans would be foolish. Star Trek has had 5 TV series, movies, a cartoon, comics, toys, etc and has been around nearly 30 years. Star Wars has been around for 25 years, has had 6 movies, comics, toys, computer games, etc. No way a show that has had 11 episodes on Fox can compete w/ that. That is not to say I don't think that Firefly does not have the potential for a large fan following, because I do. Look at all the fans flocking to the sites to support the show and get it back on the air. Now imagine how many are out there that do not visit the sites. I would say it is safe to say that there are tens of thousands of us.

Would Firefly work on the big screen? At this time I would say no. The budget per episode is $2 million so I would say that a two hour movie that would appeal to silver screen fans would need a budget of at least 10 million for advertising, promotion, costs, etc. Perhaps after having a couple of seasons and more fans under their belt Joss & crew could pull it off, but not now.

While I would love to see Firefly in any form, I'm not sure that it in general (and Serenity in specific) would be suited for the big screen. Some things are better as TV shows and some as movies. Of course, there is the Star Trek example.

Of course, with Star Trek, there's another huge parallel... it started out as a low-budget sci-fi that was saved on the strength of a fan campaign that really didn't take off until it was made into a series of movies.

So I suppose I'm supporting both sides, really. It's ALL good. (Except when it's bad. Then it's ALL bad.)

This is yet another decent idea that almost surely can't happen.

I don't know what the costs of converting/advertising/etc Serenity as a movie would be, but I'm sure it would be high.

I know I could try to get more people interested in the show with a movie than an ep. Several people I talk to would be willing to see a sci fi movie, but the chances of them watching the TV series without strong prior motivation, especially on friday, is nil.
