This is all spoiler-y, which you should know already from the title:

I was thinking about the Pax virus/chemical/whatever-it-is. It is designed, as the name implies, to pacify the populace. For the most part, it does (far too well). In some cases, as we know, it has horrible violence-inducing tendencies.

Okay, so, we can read that and the River experiment as (as Mall says) "trying to make people better." But, that doesn't seem quite satisfying to me, since it seems more like they're trying (not with River) to make people more govern-able.

So, here's the weird analogy. Tell me what you think:

Pax = the culture industry

That is to say, Pax is the equivalent of the TV, movie, video-game, whatever industry. It, for the most part, pacifies the population, probably too much, making them (err... us) complacent and easily distracted by (sorry...) relatively unimportant pop-cultural phenomena like movies, instead of being, say, politically aware and outraged in any number of ways.

The side effect on a few people (maybe) is the same as Pax, too; TV/movies/etc. may make people violent (or encourage already violent people, or whatever).

Thoughts?
