Biggest question I have is this: Did you-know-what happen to you-know-who in the early screenings, or was that saved for the final cut?

Also, what other differences were there?

Yes to your first question. And all manner of hell broke loose over on the UB in the "I've Seen Serenity" section that spilled over into the other boards until the Yahoo spoiler group was set up. I don't remember there being too much of a storm over here.

The differences I noticed were more subtle. For example, when I first saw the movie they showed the Operative's sword entering Mal during the final battle. During the final cut it happens off camera. You know the sword goes in but not quite where. Also, I don't remember the cut to the view of the Reaver ship after the big-gut-punching moment. But that could've been just me not being able to focus on the screen for a few seconds.

I have asked several times in another thread if there was any discussion regarding the vast change in the characters after the preview screenings, to which no one has answered. I am quite simply floored that word did not get out about how the characters changed.

Were there adjustments made in that respect, or is the movie essentially the same as it was in the preview screenings?

Sag.

Setting aside that I don't agree that the characters changed other than organically (just we didn't get to see every step of the journey), previews don't lead to re-writes of the entire movie. You change a scene here and there, cut moments, explain things that confused - you may remove a bit that seems too harsh or add something to soften, but the bones of the movie remains.

Unless you're an Exorcist prequel of course...

Nobody I've spoken to remembers that cut the first time they watched the movie. I remember being surprised the second time I watched the movie (the same night as the first time) and seeing that cut.
