I recall a post from a while back, with preview and BTS shots of the BDM, where the patch on Wash's arm was enhanced. I've found several great shots since then, so that's no problem. The thing is, that someone made mention that it looks an aweful lot like a real arm patch from the military or something. Can anyone help me find out what the real patch is?

G'day

If you can point me to where the post is with the patches (try saying that three times, fast!) I might be able to help. I've been making Klingon style trophy cloaks which I've covered with genre and other patches for some years now... imagine the usual fannish cloth badge vest, only ankle length and with hundreds of hand painted or photoshop manipulated patches. Insane, I know, but my Ma didn't raise any normal folk! The cloak also wears well with my Predator movie costume, with pretty much the same connotations. Anyway,
I've amassed megatonnes of information about genre logos and insignia and may recognise it if it's contemporary military as well.

Thanks for the offer Rob, but after I stopped being lazy, I found it myself, heh.

Unfortunately, the 'real' patch is oldschool soviet, and might have just been the inspiration for Wash's patch in the BDM, because they don't look much alike. I was hoping that the movie version was a modified original (and I could then modify one), but it must be a custom design.

the clearest pic of the patch is on this page

http://www.livejournal.com/community/firefly_daily/20041.html

it's easiest to F3/search for Wash to get to the pic, as there are a ton of screencaps there.

the patch seems to say "Londono." could that have something to do with the Core planet Londinum? could it be that's where Wash went to flight school?

Your guess is as good as mine, though it looks more like LYN than LON. I think it's LYNDONO, but that last letter that might be an O is hard to make out, could be a Q or a zero for all I know. What it means or refers to, the 'verse may never know.

Rob, if you see this again, how do you go about actually making your custom patches? Hand painting and Photo-manip are self-explanatory, but what do you paint/print them on to actually make a fabric patch?

G'day Skymutt,

Well, that's an easy answer but with a world of
story behind it!

You print out a reverse image of the badge on T-Shirt Iron On Transfer material, whatever brand your printer will take. Iron that onto a base farbic, cotton drill is good, which puts it the right way around again, then either put an adhesive backing on it or just sew it straight on to the garment.

The hand painting comes in either to strengthen the colours or as a different process altogether. Sometimes I put a piece of white cotton drill over the design on a white box light table and sit there and just paint the whole thing by hand. Takes ages, but kind of satisfying in a Zen like way.

I've done rather a lot of this for my Klingon/Predator/Ultimate Fan-Boy cloak project, and y'all are welcome to check it out at this URL

http://www.flickr.com/photos/83287853@N00/sets/

You'll probably need to cut and paste that into a search engine rather than just click on it or your mail programme may try and email to it.

Hope this is of some help!

Cheerio

That's easy! It's a modified Intercosmos patch from the old Soviet space program. Intercosmos was a program to let Soviet allies and satellite states go into space. I think the other patch (downward triangle) was US-Soviet mission patch to Jupiter from the movie 2010: The Year We Make Contact.

Thanks Masao, I'd seen /some/ styles of interkosmos patches, but never a round one. After you helped confirm what I thought I knew, I searched some more and found several very similar designs that I can use to make my own with Rob's method, or I just might get lucky and be able to buy a real patch to modify! I'll be searching for that 2010 patch too, but do you happen to have any decent links to replicas or screencaps that might help me out?

G'day!

Nicely I.D!

Regarding the 2010 Alexei Leonov joint USSR/USA
mission patch.

You can find the cloth badge availably commercially. I believe I got mine years ago from the Intergalactic Trading Post, not long after the film came out in 1984. There's a picture of the cloth badge here as well, which is a very useful site for S.F insignia generally.

Again, you'll need to copy these into your URL address bar to go there.

http://patchdistributor.bizland.com/wHOlesale7002.chtml

There's also a very good Exhibition site for the 2001/2010 logos here where you'll get an actual ready to go graphic:

http://www.2001exhibit.org/arts/patches2.html

I've just heard that a big Stanley Kubrick exhibition is coming to the Australian Centre For Moving image here in New Melbourne, and they're bringing an original spacesuit loaned by a private collector, not sure if it's a Discovery or Lunar suit, or perhaps even a replica from 2010 Can't wait to see it, as i've been working on a 2001 suit of my own for some time and this will be an unlooked for opportunity to finish off my research! Sometimes ya get to be in the right place at the right time...

Back to the badge. I've got a Leonov one on my cloak, and as it happens I did a lot of research so I could handpaint it. The trouble with the commercial cloth badges is that the crew names on the border around the inverted triangle are sewn somewhat impressionistically so are really rather hard to read. Anyway, if you plan to reproduce the names they are in white capital letters (san serifs) in a plain font like Ariel. The crew names on the left angled border have the tops of the letters facing towards the triangle, the ones on the left have their bottoms facing the triangle. Each name is seperated by a -

The crew names in Peter Hyams film are slightly different from Clarke's novelization.

On my badge I've got the movie crew names....

Left Border- KIRBUK-RUDEKNO-KOVALEV-SVETLANOV-TEANOVSKY

Right Border- FLOYD-CHANDRA-ORLOV-BRAILOVSKY-YAKUNINA

Only the LEONOV on the top border is in Cyrillic.
Captain Tanya KIRBUK's last name is a play on KUBRICK.

Of course, if the Serenity art department just brought a commercial Leonov patch without modification and slapped it onto the jacket then
that would be more accurate, technically!

As for the Intercosmos badges-these patches are sort after by collectors and there's quite a trade in originals and reproductions.

Here are two different sites to start with...

Intercosmos pins here

Patches

I've got a bunch of Intercosmos insignia on my second cloak, but haven't got around to cataloging them properly yet. Now I'll have to make sure I include Wash's amongst the other Serenity/Firefly graphics!

Incidentally, the fancier computerised sewing machines are able to take in digital files and reproduce embroidered badges. You can also, in Australia at least, go to some Malls and get it done by one of the custom baseball/trucker cap embroiderers. Mind you, it would be cheaper to get the patches from one of the online traders.

Now you know why I made all my own badges myself rather than try and get the hundreds required from a diversity of sources!

Hope this is of some help,

Cheerio

Hot Buttered Cripes, Rob! That's a LOT of info. Thanks yet again. I'd found 1 or 2 good images of the Leonov patch from sellers on eBay, and was hoping to find a better view of Wash's version before I did anything about that one.

Well now, no worries. Old Chinese Saying: "Sharing is the best way to take the 'work' out of 'artwork' ".

Speaking of which, I'll be wanting to pepper my second badge cloak with Firefly/Serenty insignia/flags/logos etc. I figure the DVD release of the film ain't that far off, which will be the best way of getting good screen grabs. I've ordered the visual guide but haven't seen it. Anyone know if it has good pics of graphics? Does anyone know offhand of good links to Firefly graphics? Alliance flags, security badges, Independent flags, and so on....I'll do my own search of course (part of the fun!) but am always chuffed if I don't have to reinvent the wheel....
Haven't done a run through of the series yet for graphics, but that'll be the next pleasant job.

Much obliged for any help, suggestions, etc.

Rob,
In case you haven't looked lately; The first link you posted above (the place with the bajillion patches) has a few serenity/firefly ones. All but one were real tiny pics, but the Browncoat patch has a huge graphic, perfect for printing. I'd also found a decent sized pic of the gold Alliance security badge on eBay, though I'm not sure if that auction ended. Here's a direct link that should work.

Marvelous, and right under my nose! Couple of good badges right there....kind of like riding out of Camelot looking for the Holy Grail only to find that it's being used as an egg cup on the Round Table.....

Or somesuch.
