ANGELDOVE

I am the manager of a restaurant that sits next to the only theatre in the area playing Serenity. Often patrons come to eat and then go to the movies. Surprising a lot of people do this without having decided which movie they are going to go see. So I am often asked what I would recommend. I haven't been doing a good job of selling the movie. Mostly I get blank stares or 'that sounds weird' and 9 times out of 10 prior to this opening weekend people ended up going to see Flightplan. So, anyone got a great selling point, some way that you've been able to get those not familiar with the series to go? I want to do my part, other than bribing my employees to go, which has been successful in that now I am now not only loaning out my Firefly loaner set, but my own personal copy. (which just means I'll have to buy a new one, no biggie). The theatre traffic has actually only been so-so, but I did find a lot of teenagers tonight that were going to see Serenity. I went out and took a poll while offering free pizza bites, got mobbed more than a few times, but at least it was nice to know they were going to see it. Teenage boys don't seem to be the hard sell. It's the older set that I know would walk out appreciative of the great writing and a plot that actually exists, something that has been in short supply this movie going season. So basically I need help!!!!

I don't know if this will help, but I've been fairly successful with this pitch: First I note that it's hard to describe the film, then I go on to say "It's kind of like if Star Wars were about Han Solo instead of Luke." That usually seems to interest ppl (of all ages, but my audience has usually been college students).

Also, if you've seen it, just emphasize how good it was. "It's just very good movie." Or maybe: "It doesn't have a huge special effects budget or brand name stars, so it has to simply rely on good acting and quality storytelling." Those also seem to work. Whatever you do, keep at it, my friend!

ZERONULL

I hate to say it, but do not mention Josh, the TV series, western, or Buffy. Just say Serenity is an action-packed scifi thriller with great characters and an outstanding story. Simply end with your highest recommendation. If they press for more details, just tell them that Serenity is a special movie that needs to experienced first hand.

I agree with Zeronull, refrain from mentioning those, especially Buffy or Angel, cause people know those names and there's very few who have a middle point for them, Either they love them or hate them, and if they love them chances are they love Joss and have seen it already, and if they hate it, then are they really going to go see a movie that's by the same writer, i think not.

OH OH OH, you know what else you should do!!! you should get a Computer download the first 9 mins of the movie and put it on a continues play, yes! you should do that, then everyone can see what an awesome movie it is! and they'll all go see it! lol, just a though :)

I suggest not going with anyone standard pitch... Ask them 2 questions first:

"What kind of movie do you like to watch?"

"Which TV shows do you general catch on the tube?"

Then tailor fit your answer to whatever tumble out of their mouths... if they say Buffy or whatever, then abso-freakin-lutely sell it with that angle. If they like scifi, then sell it scifi. If they like romance, sell them romance...

A standard stock answer would only sell it to about 1 in 10... at best.

LADYSHELLEY

Well the 9 minutes opener on line has helped me sprend the word. I've posted the link to about 4 different lists (which is roughly 4000 people). Some of them will see the online bit and then go see the movie.
