You know, I read over Nathan's rant and I can't help but feel a definite underlying tone to what he's saying. Lately, I find myself torn. I'm so excited about the upcoming movie, Though my heart belongs to the series. But somehow in the midst of it I feel the cold cash greedy fingers of the Alliance creeping in. The situation Nathan faced was a prime example. Now because "Serenity" is gonna be big, folks wanna cash in. Excuse me!!! There wouldn't have been a Serenity without the hard work & undying dedication of us fans. Yes, I'm one of those folks who got his Zazzle shop shut down, or should I say SHOT down becuase Serenity & Firefly is now big enough to make money, and some money hungry suits want it for themselves. I understand what Nathan faced. The captain faced em head on. This (doo-face) dufus was standing right in front of the reason these comics even exist and didn't know it. Oh my freaking cow. Had I been working in a comic shop and Cappy had walked in it would have been a "Waynes World We're Not Worthy Moment" But what really angered the Captain was how the fans were being treated. It's this REAVERIZING of the fans that's making Nathan so angry. And it's got me pretty gorram ticked too. Serenity & Firefly has never been about the "next big thing in Sci-fi." So lets all jump on the commercial bandwagon. It's been about one thing moving forward because you believe in something. And what did we believe in? Firefly. The dream & vision of Joss Whedon. Yes, I wanna see Joss make money & be succesful. One of my favorite quotes by Walt Disney, "I don't make movies so I can make money, I make money so I can make more movies." I guess I'm just disheartened by so many people who have no true idea what Firefly is just trying to make money off it. And what about all those Zazzle & Cafe Press shops? The goal was never to bank on Firefly, but to provide our fellow fans with the goods to let our voice be heard. I'm so so thankful that folks like Joss, & Adam & Nathan and all the BDH's acknowledge us and don't want to see us get ripped off.
Am I seeking recognition for what I have done as a fan? No, I'm just praying that Joss's dream doesn't get buried under the commercialism nightmare.

While I agree with you fully. I think you should come to terms with the fact that the only reason Universal took on Serenity was for it's financial potential. Now should that potential be met, then you can pretty much rest assured that all your marketing fears will be realised.

Like you I hope Joss' dream doesn't get buried under mass commercialism, but unfortunately that's the rub of a successful film. And if Joss thereafter chooses not to say; direct a series of half baked sequels, you can pretty much bet that some up coming hot-sh*t director looking to put his name on the plate will (Paul Anderson anyone!!), and Universal will fund them, as surely as they are guaranteed to continue making the spondulicks!

All this puts us fans in a bit of a quandry really, because we want this film to be successful both artistically and in terms of the box office. It's just these days box office success is synonymous with mass marketing deals, whereby the film takes second place.

I was watching the Monanco grand prix this year and while we were treated to an in car camera shot of David Coulthard entering the pits, his pit crew came out dressed as Stormtoopers!!! I didn't know what the hell was going on!!! I thought I'd stumbled into some kind of game/tv/film hybrid!!!! It was weird as hell - and yet a prime example of where success can take a film. Coupled with the fact that chewbacca was howling with joy as he exited the pit lane really left me quite perplexed as to what I was watching. Was it a race, a toy or some kind of april fools day joke?.... No it was simply a massive marketing campaing, with all ingredients syncronised to perfection.

So as much as we believe in Firefly and Serenity for it's artistic merits, there will be those who equally believe in it for it's commercial ones.

Best thing we can do is to enjoy it in our own way and not let too many of these adverse commercial inevitablities undermine, for us, what is one of the greatest show's ever made and Serenity by proxy possibly one of the greatest films ever made.

My opinion is that I hope the movie, and associated merchandising, is a HUGE commercial success, because as distasteful as I find commercialism, realistically, that's the only way we're going to get to see more of Joss's vision, i.e., sequels.

And more (Joss's) Firefly is better, no matter how it happens.

Althought I do want Serenity to be a commerical success, I hope that it does not bring the degradation that has happened to other series *coughstarwarscough*

I guess ultimately, this is the only thing I really fear in the transition of Firefly from small to big screen: schlocky sequels directed by second-rate hacks. I can deal with the commercialism, cause hey--cool merch. I can deal with the new fans, cause I'm satisfied knowing I've been around since the television days. I can even deal with incessant marketing--more marketing=more fans=more money at the box office=more sequels.

But if Joss jumps ship and Universal cranks out dreck (think "Serenity--Revenge of the Reavers") I think I'll be hurt worse than I was when our beloved show was cancelled.

Ultimately, I'm not all that worried about it, though, because Joss cares too deeply about the Firefly 'verse (yes, it'll always be the "Firefly" 'verse to me, regardless of how good the movie is) to let it be run into the ground like some improbably created sperm whale.

I wonder whether the "non-Joss-involved-crappy-Serenity-sequel" scenario is likely, or even legally possible.

It seems plausible to me that Joss might have a clause in his contract that gives him approval or veto power over thingslike that. One thing about JW, he's maintained control over all the properties he's created, including the script of a not-terribly-successful movie and then turned that into a TV series, which he saw through to the end. Meanwhile, Aaron Sorkin lost all control of "West Wing" two seasons in.

Even if he doesn't, Joss is so publicly identified with this project and is a near rock star in terms of adululation, that they'd be very afraid to do something without his official seal of approval.

Seems to me that, in the even of any crappy sequels at some point down the line (heaven forfend), we'll probably have to blame Joss.

I hope they all realize how much we love them and it has nothing to do with money or success or whatever else. I hope they realize how much they are supported, regardless of idiots.

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

Rumours abound that Tim Minear might direct the next one. Based on his direction of Bushwhacked & the Message, I dread this possibility.
