Hi All,

Just got off the phone with a friend who works down the street at the Discovery Channel ( In beautiful downtown Silver Spring, Maryland ) and she confirmed what I've suspected for a long time... Every night when your DVR / TIVo "phones home", it also downloads info on what your tv was viewing, what channels were watched, etc. This info is relayed to subscribing cable channels who want to know demographic info.
It's not Big Brother in that it doesn't report what I, Maura, watched. It simply reports that a tv was tuned from 7-8 PM to the Sci-Fi Channel on Friday night. If the Sci-Fi channel is a subscriber to this info ( and of course they are...) they will be able to get a very good count of people who aren't Nielson folks who watched the show.
