Looks like the only Browncoat heroes will be US, guys, so let's get coordinated.

1) When are you going?
2) Where are you staying?
3) Anyone looking for roommate/ place to stay?
4) Where are we meeting for dinner on Saturday?

Not much time left.
Let's communicate.

See you in the world,
Suze

Well, at least KRAD will be there (had a lovely chat with him yesterday!)

1) Saturday morning
2) Home, just an up & back for me
3) Nope
4) You guys tell me, you're the natives :) anything besides Mexican works for me (although I've been craving Japanese...)

What about Chinese?

I hear that Chinatown is nearby.

Also, we have a studio suite, so if there're only a few of us, we could party at our place.

Or go out for dinner, return to Windsor Hotel for
drinks and charades ;-)

Gonzai, how do you feel about The Continental, at 6pm? Suggestion by Pol1 on Univ Board thread, with link about the restaurant.

Think KRAD would want to go?
We're getting a head count.

Keep flying

Y'know, it might be worth it to go up to hang with the Browncoats... if there's a couple of you. And there still are some cool guests there. Just disappointed that we've STILL not heard from Universal.

Keep flying

I was going to cancel and go to ACY instead, but there weren't any shows we wanted to see and the other couple couldn't go this weekend. So I said, heck, let's do WizardCon on Saturday, maybe hit Longwood Gardens on Sunday? And Bob said that would be a good way to celebrate Suze's birthday.

So we'll be there. Sami will get to meet Seth Green. We can support Dark Horse and Universal.

You wanna go to WizardCon, Jason?

We might have a roomie for ya if you do decide to come up: Sami's quasi-boyfriend has ambitions of becoming an artist/ illustrator, and I've invited him along (I don't know if he's asked his folks or not yet. Gorram teenagers! Oh - present company excepted, naturally).

The Continental sounds fine, I'm leaving it up to the judgment of the locals

I'm pretty much just coming for Seth and hanging with fellow Browncoats, so I'm fairly flexible. As for Krad, we could invite him, he's a cool guy, but better ask him now, he had his plans in Baltimore set well before he got there.

Wally Pipp said I could paste this over from MOH Board:

If you're just looking for a place for lunch, run right across the street from the convention center to the Reading Terminal Market. There a large variety of lunch-type foods can be had at a reasonable price. The Market is a very popular place in Philadelphia, however. I suspect a large part of the convention crowd will gravitate toward it, due to its popularity and proximity to the convention center. It's a great place to eat, but you might have to wait a while if you go right at lunchtime.

The Gallery at Market East is an indoor mall that's just a short walk south and east of the convention center. It contains a food court on the bottom floor with most of the vendors we've come to expect at an indoor mall. The advantage of the food court is that it's perfect for those not interested in a culinary adventure, who just want to eat standing up and then run back to the convention.

If none of those pique your interest, my personal suggestion for lunch "Philly" style would be Jake's Pizza at Broad and Race, about three blocks west and one block north of the convention center. I work in the huge, white tower a few blocks north of Jake's on Broad Street and it's where I choose to go for lunch if I'm ever here during the day. Also, if you're interested in sampling that quintessential Philadelphia favorite, the "Philly Cheese Steak," this is really the place to go, Jim's, Pat's, and Geno's notwithstanding. I've had cheese steaks at all three of the places listed above, and at many other locales, and Jake's serves a cheese steak that ranks right up there with the best, far superior to the other more famous places that you normally hear about. If you walk there, do yourselves a favor and take the time to marvel at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts across Broad Street. The building was designed by Frank Furness and is one of the finest examples of Victorian architecture in North America.

As far as good restaurants are concerned, Philadelphia is packed with them. As usual, it all depends on how much you want to spend, what particular variety of food you're looking for, and what kind of experience you're in the mood for. There's a lot of really nice but really expensive restaurants close to where Walnut and Locust intersect Broad Street in the center of town. I wouldn't suggest these unless you're willing to spend several hundred dollars for a meal that can be had much more reasonably elsewhere, if being seen frequenting a trendy Philly eatery is not really your objective.

If you're just looking to sate your hunger, there are small restaurants all along South Street from Front Street (closest to the Delaware River) to about 8th Street. I wouldn't venture much further west on South Street, but I am speaking from experience that's about 20 years old. Also, one of Philadelphia's finest Italian restaurants, The Monte Carlo Living Room, is on the corner of 2nd and South, but be prepared to take out a second mortgage on your home to eat there.

There are any number of smallish, bar/restaurant type places on 2nd and 3rd Sts. from about Race Street (where the Benjamin Franklin Bridge is) to about Walnut Street (where Society Hill Towers, the three big apartment buildings, are). Most of these are more bar than restaurant and although some of the food is well above average, it's mostly bar variety, fried, finger food, i.e., sandwiches and the like. The advantage of South Street, Headhouse Square (2nd Street from South to Pine), and 2nd and 3rd Sts described above, is that a lot of Philly's weekend night life takes place at these three areas, all within walking distance of each other.

There are also a lot of dance clubs on what used to be Delaware Avenue but is now Christopher Columbus Boulevard on the waterfront at the river's edge. None of these are really within walking distance of the convention center or each other, unless you go to Dave & Buster's (more of a bar/restaurant cum adult video arcade than dance club) at about Race Street and Columbus Blvd (just north of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge), and then about 50 yards north of D&B's to Rock Lobster on Columbus Blvd., and from there another 50 yards north to Cavanaugh's River Deck. Rock Lobster and Cavanaugh's are more traditional dance clubs, but with an emphasis on dance music from the 80s and 90s rather than hip-hop or rap. They also feature the occasional live bands, but with a $10 or $15 cover charge. Of course, if this was 25 years ago, you could've gone to Dobb's at 3rd and South and risked seeing George Thorogood or Kevin Bacon. At that time, however, I would've strongly suggested going to Grendel's Lair at 5th and South where you would've seen me, not performing per se, but in general making a fool of myself. Grendel's Lair has gone the way of all things unfortunately, and been replaced with a Gap, where disaffected young suburbanites now purchase their uniforms.

If you've left the convention for the day and you're looking for someplace to not so much eat as to "have dinner," let me suggest the following: First, I love Italian food, so if that's not what you're looking for, skip to the end and find someone else to suggest a restaurant. Second, I'd rather not have to sign over my firstborn in order to eat, and I assume you all feel the same (although I haven't met your firstborns, so I really don't know). With that in mind, for good food AND ambiance I would suggest La Vigna Restaurant at Front and Federal in South Philadelphia. The food is good, the wine is good, and it's an impressive, dressy place for a first date or a continuing romance.

For less ambiance and great food, I would suggest Ralph's Restaurant at 9th and Christian in South Philadelphia. If you really like Italian food and your relationship is on a more comfortable, firmer footing, this is the place to strap on the ol' feedbag. I've eaten almost the entire menu here and have never left unhappy. You will have to bring cash with you however, because Ralph's is a "Cash Only" establishment. If you try to pay with a credit card, you might wind up fertilizing the flora in the Tinicum Wildlife Sanctuary.

Finally, for a singular dining experience, let me suggest Victor's Cafe ( http://philadelphia.citysearch.com/profile/8990933/philadelphia_pa/vic
tor_cafe.html
)
It's between 13th and Juniper on Dickinson in South Philadelphia. I have never been here, but I have had great reports of this place from long-time friends. They say the food is exceptional and the wait staff SINGS OPERA WHILE THEY SERVE YOU. I have always wanted to go here but have never quite made it. Please allow me to live vicariously through you. Experience this restaurant and then report back so that I can gnash my teeth in envy.

No, I'm not a member of the Philadelphia Tourism Board. If you'd ever seen me, you'd know, judging by my size, that I'm a guy who likes a good meal (or three). The other stuff, about the PAFA and the nightclubs, that's a bonus.

Warmest personal regards, Wally Pipp

From Suze:
8:09 AM Wow, Wally, that's quite a comprehensive listing there.
Thank you very much.

>>Shucks, ma'am. 'Tweren't nuthin'.

May I copy your post to the folks on FFFnet? And the UnivBoard?

>>Absolutely. But this list is by no means comprehensive. Did I forget to mention that the convention center is about three blocks west of Philadelphia's Chinatown? I think if you bang on any door in Chinatown, an elderly Asian woman will answer and whip up some Mu Gu Gai Pan for the right price. Failing that, there is an embarassment of riches in the way of Asian-style food within a four- to five-block radius of the convention center, e.g., Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, Burmese, Indian, and Japanese, as well as standard Chinese fare.

Suze: Also, am I reading correctly that you think there are better
choices closer to the WizardCon than the Continental?

>>Maybe not better, but definitely closer. The Continental that I think he's talking about is at 2nd and Market. The convention center is at 11th and Arch, i.e., one block north and nine blocks west. You'd have to pass by Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the Constitution Center, the US Mint, and the nation's first Post Office to get there, but it may take more time away from the convention than many people are willing to spend. Don't get me wrong: The Continental is a nice place, a combination bar/diner that opened within the last 10 years. As I recall, it was considered very trendy when it opened and is still a very popular spot. It was also a key factor in the revitalization of that section of the city, called "Olde City."

BTW, if anyone is coming into Philly from out of town on Friday night and staying near the convention center, Olde City celebrates First Friday on the first Friday of every month. This means that all the art galleries have an open house in the evening and large crowds of folks wander around 2nd, 3rd, Market, Race, and Arch having a good time. If you come into town on Friday night and are looking for something to do, it's not a bad way to pass the time.

Best personal regards, Wally Pipp

Well, I'll consider it, but Philadelphia is a mite far to go. I might just stick to going to Shore Leave this summer (in Baltimore). If only I could go to Dragon Con...

Still, keep me updated on plans. Might be worth going if there will be a shindig event - although as I know it most Browncoats have cancelled.

Keep flying

We'd love to see you Jason, but understand completely that you have to save your money for the PA Shindig in October ;-)

So if we don't see ya, we'll see you soon enuff.
