It was a cold and rainy Friday afternoon, and my sister and I, lets call her KiKi, were both off school for various reasons. I think she was just slightly ill, whereas I had really just about had enough of that pit of despair.

I had already shown her The Train Job a few weeks beforehand, and she was fairly amused, very confused, and verrry discouraged to continue watching. (Kudos to all of you who weren't put off it, because I can understand why she was, it was just really overwhelming.)
I suggested, now we had time, pyjamas, and lots of tuna pasta that we watch Serenity, and perhaps take it from there.

She moaned, whined a little, asked if we couldn't just watch Buffy instead, because then she knew who everyone was. I got out my whip and put on Serenity. She asked very few questions, giggled, was fascinated by the Reavers, was fascinated by River in a box, but unfortunately not convinced when I tried to tell her: "Kaylee is really dead," because "She's in the next episode!" When Mal joked about throwing Kaylee in the hold and she kissed him and said "I love my captain," she said "You can tell this is a Joss Whedon show." I was baffled by why it was this particular moment, but chose to take it as a big compliment. She also said "Joss loves lesbians doesn't he?" I asked who were lesbians and she said Kaylee and Inara...BWA HAHAHAHA!

We watched up to 'Out of Gas' before the day ran out. Interesting things to note: She was laughing much more about Jayne's song than I remember doing. She asked me if it was wrong to have a crush on both Sean and Nathan...I said not in the slightest She worked out River was psychic by frigging episode 3!! She laughed just as hard as I at: "That's why I never kiss 'em on the mouth," so wait 'til she hears "I'll be in my bunk." She got really really angry at Mal for injecting himself in the heart, which I thought was weird, but obviously that means shes invested in the character. When Mal fell on the floor at the beginning too and blood trickled through the grate she was quite openly disturbed and upset and kept going "noo please tell me if he dies!" "Why have they left him " before realising he's in the movie trailer, yet still quite upset! She thinks Wash is hi-larious

Anyhow, she didn't really tell me whether she liked it or not, even though her reactions were promising, and only agreed that it was excellent if I prodded her, so I was a little let down.

When I woke up this morning I found a little note on the floor by my door (she'd gone on a schooltrip to France at 5 in the morning and I'd seen her come in and leave it at half 4) saying:

"I have fallen in love with Firefly. More watching on Sunday, no? - KiKi"

Yeaaahhh, one happy Browncoat. There may be a big thread or something in the archive, but I was wondering if anyone has any other heartwarming convert tales. It's really made my day

Hee hee. Perhaps your sis was equating Kaylee to Willow. They do have a similary warm, friendly dispositon, and if she's such a fan of Buffy, it would make sense to compare the two.

Thanks for the sharing!

Awesome convert!

My tales are always less heartwarming, and more me being really good with picking my people. My first convert was my sister, on the last day of school. She was over (she's 10 years older than I am), and when The Body became too depressing for her, I dove at the chance to show her Serenity. What can I say...13 hours later, I was asleep on the couch, but she was just finishing up Objects in Space. 0.0 That was a good intro to converting people!

My other two were easy...I gave one of my good friends who loved Buffy the first disk, and within two weeks she was hooked, adored River, and couldn't wait for the movie. My dad is an Trekkie, and he would find me watching episodes and be mildly interested in watching them. It wasn't until he looked at me during the closing credits of one of them and said "Watching another one?" that I realized he liked it. Not too long after, he admitted that he thought it was just as good as, if not better, than Star Trek at his prime. I was one proud Browncoat.

"Bwaa...it's kind of a warrior...strikes fear into the hearts of..."

See, funny thing is, when I first saw the intreraction between Kaylee and Inara, as well as that line that Jayne says about Kaylee wishing *Simon* were a gynecologist (I thought he said *Kaylee* wished she was) I initially thought Kaylee was gay.

So I think the sis "Kiki" and I were thinking alike in that sense.

Yeah, I can see how mishearing Jayne's line would aid to the confusion. I never once thought of Kaylee as sly, but I guess if she's in an engine room, anything's possible!

It's a good thing Kaylee's not gay, 'cause then she never would have gotten on the ship! :)

Unless there's something about Bester I don't know about...

p1nkispunk,

I am attempting to convert 2 current co-workers, 1 former co-worker and 1 current boss right now. #1 co-worker and former co-worker have discs 3 and 4. #2 co-worker has disc 2 and boss will have disc 1 tomorrow (I just got it back from current co-worker #2).

Anyway, #1 and former co-workers love it. We watched all of discs 1 and 2 in one night, disc 3 in one other night and will watch disc 4 probably Tuesday. They laugh and gasp and say "Oh, no!" in all the right spots. They really liked "I'll be in my bunk."

Current co-worker #2 watched all of disc one by himself last Thursday, because he took a day off to sleep in after watching the midnight viewing of SWIII. He really enjoyed it, and I'm hoping he watched disc 2 this weekend, so I can get discs 3 and 4 back from current co-worker #1 and former co-worker to give to him this week.

Boss just keeps making fun of me. But I think I will have the last laugh, once he starts watching the show.

Seeing Bester and Kaylee in the engine room, I'd say it's safe to say there's little left to the imagination. Can't blame a guy for not fixin the boat if it keeps ya in the engine room with such a prarie harpy as Kaylee. (Unless ya lose your job over it)

My conversion story isn't as cool, but it still makes me happy.

My younger sister isn't a big Whedon fan. She watched a little bit of Buffy, but was far from hooked. Earlier this year I had managed to get her hooked on the Harry Potter books, so I thought it was time to bring her over to the Browncoats.

So one day I decided I would send her my copy of FF. However, I couldn't bear to part with it, so I eventually bought her a copy as an early birthday gift.

Two days after she got it, she called me up at work, leaving me a voice mail saying she had just watched "Our Mrs Reynolds". She thought Book's "special Hell" line was the funniest thing ever. She then told me how much she loved the show, and thanked me repeatedly. I could hear her husband saying "thank you" repeatedly in the background.
Now they're hooked (they both had a hard time not watching the next episode while the other was at work), and when I go see them next week, I'm gonna get them converting people.

4 conversions at once!!

Damn...I spit on my conversion tale, that's just incredible

Sister now watched Firefly over and over, two eps each evening, and her IM name contains quotes which makes me indescribably happy.

She also assured me that if she hadn't seen FF she would have still gone to see the movie, because it looked awesome and "that Kasabian track did it for me."

No that tale is equally thrilling, as is any conversion tale...our love is spreading thick and fast!

Yup my sister loved that line! Our Mrs. Reynolds is her favourite episode and was my favourite for aaages because it's just too damn funny.

Loving Out of Gas at the moment though *bows to Minear*

Conversion update:

Current co-worker #1 and former co-worker were devastated when, halfway through OIS, I said, "Oh, by the way, this is the last episode." I had to pause the disc to field all the questions such as, "What?? THIS is the last episode? There's no more after this? No second season? What happens to them? Why was it cancelled?" and so on.

They were somewhat mollified when I told them about the BDM and are looking forward to seeing it with me. So far, they have only agreed to go to one showing. So far.....

Current co-worker #2 has discs 3 and 4 now and will watch them over the weekend. I predict total conversion by next week.

Boss has discs 1 and 2. I'm not so sure about him. He's a geek, but more into video games. I'll know more when I get to work next Wednesday.
