Boost Mobile haz been my sel fone company for many yirz, ever sins they took over Virgin, wich took over (forgot their name) wich took over PrimeCo sum time in the 00z, hoo I’d been with sins 1999. I wuz a loyal customer to a seriez uv fickle companiez.

I’m going to be swiching to Consumer Sellular today.

Wy?

The reazon iz kuz I get a haf duzen callz frum skammerz and solisitorz every day, so wen Boost callz to ask wy I dropped them I can hav the satisfaction uv saying ‘kuz you are moronz’.

Therez a voise that tellz the name or number calling wen I get callz before it starts ringing. Wen its a skammer, it sez ‘skam likely’. Its also ritten and appearz az ‘skam likely’ in the call log.

Insted uv interrupting me 4, 5, 6 timez a day, they shoud be just completely blocking the callz! DU!

To get a notion uv how rediculously stoopid the fone companiez are, imajin youre in Walgreenz, normally a nice, peaseful, quiet store, and a sassy yung woman woks up to you and sez ‘Hi! I’m Rachel! We hav been trying to reach you about your car warranty about to expire.” You shoo her away and she runz over to another customer. A minit later a man woks up and sez “Pleaze lissen carefully. We hav an investment opportuniity in the exploding field uv enerjy exploration…” GO AWAY! a minit later and “Hi! I’m Jackie! Hav you been feeling less perky in the bedroom lately? Our aluminum siding is just wut you need to get your enthuziazm up agen!”

See? It aint gunu happen! The manajer will toss them out within 5 minits and call the cops if they try to get back in.

I dont expect Consumer Sellular to be any better at handling skammerz and spammerz. The entire fone industry iz either blitheringly incompetent or actually competing to see hoo can piss off their customerz the most! AT&T iz lejendary for their incomprehensible billz dezined to hide overcharjing. I imajin the CEOz uv the major companiez on a golf course plasing little million dollar wajerz over how well a new idea to jenerate complaints will work.

(I rote this az a Wordpress post in How Stoopid Are We?, but I'v had enuf uv that. Between Google Krome'z debilitating keybord quirks and Wordpress re-inventing wordprosessing basic functionz, it haz become too much uv a hassle to put anything together there.)

How do they detect scam? Do they have a "blacklist"?
Just curious.
But yes, if "scam likely" why put it thru at all?

What I hate is the next iteration of scam: phone number spoofing. Why am I getting a call from Andrew Wyatt in Florida, and Mabel Martinez in Hawaiian Gardens, and Jack Sparrow in New Jersey?

Because I'm not!

If you try to call those numbers back (I've tried from time to time) you'll get some sort of error recording:

Does not take incoming calls, or
Not in service, or
... sometimes just a dead line

Now, the phone companies can EASILY stop spoofed calls by doing what I did: ringing the presumed number to see if a connection can be made, BEFORE putting the call thru!

But, they won't.

It sucks. I hate it.

My buddy swears by it. He's got unlimited talk and text for only $12.50 a month with no additional charges. He said it used to be $15 a month and just went down recently for no reason. No contracts. As far as I know, he never complains about unsolicited calls.

He was even able to use his old cell phone and didn't have to buy a new one.

For various reasons I recently got a Verizon/Tracfone 'burner phone'. Since I've never had a pre-pay before I asked for information getting more minutes. So the guy at the store says he'll show me and spend 45 MINUTES on his phone trying to put it through. That seemed a bit excessive for what should be a routine transaction, but ... I've never done this before. So, ok. Whatever. 2 days later I got a text saying my minutes were about to expire at the end of the day. WT??? I just got a whole extra month a couple of days before.

So I called the help line - went through 3 menus - was put on hold - finally got to talk to a live person - who was a Filipina by her accent - with a rooster crowing VERY loudly and clearly at her end of the line - and then the line squealed loudly and the call dropped. Repeat 2 more times. Called the help line again, went through all the menus again, got put on hold again, only this time I got a Filipino, and I got one sentence in to explain why I was calling - and then the line squealed loudly and the call dropped. Rep[eat with this other help-line person 2 more times. That's 6 times total I went through all the steps, waited on hold, only to have my call dropped literally the same minute I got a live person on the line.

Why should I trust the company? Is it so technically impoverished that it can't manage its own internal phone system?

Yeah. US Mobile isn't a burner phone.

They buy up the minutes from the big boys and repackage them at cheaper prices. You can buy a phone from them or you can just jailbreak your own phone (assuming you even need to do that anymore with yours) and they'll mail you a sim card for free to try it out for a few weeks before you're billed.

That behavior screams "scam" to me. It's not that they can't take your call, it's just that they have no interest in doing so.

I'd cut your losses.

If you don't want to try US Mobile, you can give Consumer Cellular a shot. They're more expensive per month than US Mobile but they have more brand recognition if that makes you feel more comfortable. They also offer you a senior citizen discount applied to your monthly bill where US Mobile is cheaper than the discount already and everyone gets the same rate.

Thats an impressiv amount uv hassle!

I tried calling Virjin Mobile twise not long after they took over US Sellular (your companyz name reminded me, 6string). They had an on-hold thing going that sounded like sum sorta morning zoo shock jok radio show after-the-break thing for a hip-hop station insted uv myoozak. "Youre lissenin tu Freebie & The Bean LIVE, beochez!" The same 5 secondz over & over & over. Exreemly irritating. I think the 15 or so minits I let it run the 1st time left a scar on my brain.

Nobody ever picked up. A few weeks later I tried agen and coud only take a minit befor I gave up.

For the record, we have T-mobile, and the very most basic "family package". My only complaint about them is that we have very poor reception RIGHT AT OUR HOUSE. Go two houses in any direction, and their signal useable.

It may have to do with the aluminum foil backing that was on the plywood that was used to re-roof.

Anyway, when we want to use our mobiles at home we use our wifi calling.

What I REALLY hate are the phones. Programmed by monkeys that didn't talk to each other.

And then there's Google, which scrapes everything off your phone. Log in once, and it's permamently sucks pictures, texts, contacts, calendars.. everything gets stored to google cloud. Apparently the only way to go back to storing stuff on your device is to back up whatever you want to keep to another device (for me that would be photos, which I offload to a hard drive anyway, and contacts which go to a .vcf file), and do a factory reset.

Unlikely. My house haz aluminum siding and I get good signal.
