CNN is reporting that Donald Trump has told advisers that he will refuse to leave the White House on Inauguration Day. Aides report being alarmed by Trump saying this, knowing that Secret Service escorting a president out of the White House would not be such a good look. If Trump is still in the White House at noon on January 20th, he will be escorted out in humiliating fashion. While Trump as a former president will have some Secret Service protection, the agency will be operating under the Biden administration at that point and can order Trump’s security detail to stand down.

It’s also quite likely Trump disappears at Christmas time or takes Air Force One down to Florida for an Inauguration Day campaign rally. Refusing to leave altogether would be the most dramatic option. His supporters would love the defiance and there would be nothing better for ratings and shock value. For a president driven by his own self-interest, it’s clearly an option he’s been considering. While it would provide great entertainment, a move like this would be horrible for democracy and further tarnish America’s image in the world.

There is no substitute in the US governing system for the engagement of a President during a massive national enterprise. But there is also no sign that Trump cares to offer leadership to ensure the success of the mammoth vaccination program that holds hope of eventually ending the pandemic. This after his denial of the virulence of Covid-19 undoubtably worsened the death toll.

Trump is also running interference for Russia, prioritizing the interests of an adversary over America's after a massive cyberattack blamed on the Kremlin.

These infractions add up to the dereliction of presidential duty on a grand scale. It is impossible to imagine any other president of the modern era behaving in such a way or for either of the political parties to tolerate his abuse of power. Former President George W. Bush's neglect during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 seems tame by comparison.

The current President's anti-democratic behavior since the election is validating the fears of critics -- and more than 80 million Biden voters -- who worried about his unchained behavior in a second term. Like many fading strongmen leaders, his antics are becoming more unhinged as the prospect of losing power becomes tangible.

But in the meantime, Trump is talking about using the military to run another election. Since the logistics are complex, that won't happen for many months, but Trump will graciously remain President until after the military-run election.
