This is posted as a service to those who don't normally see the kind of weather that the Global Warming is currrently thrusting at them, in their region.

I expect some others may wish to contribute, but I would prefer to not derail into discussion unless posts are the opposite of truth. Just remember that some posts made by others are not endorsed by me, and therefore should not be confused with mine.

In Snow or slush:
Keep one hand on the shift knob all the time, as habit. At first sensation of loss of traction, the absolute quickest way to regain traction is to slip into neutral. With stick, this can be done with clutch, and/or placing the stick in neutral. With Auto, most transmissions allow you to push up and nudge from Drive into neutral, without pulling back, and this prevents from accidentally nudging too far into reverse.

This also applies to stopping, braking. Being in Neutral will reduce your stopping distance in inclement weather. Even the road being cold reduces traction. And the "first freeze" of the year forces the oils out of the roadway, making the surface slick. This reduces traction, and also lures the deer out on the road to lick the surface. Up north, we encounter this annually, but I am mentioning this to those who do not normally see freezing temps, or have forgotten. Most "accidents" occur during this month of "first freeze" which for me is usually September.

With stick, using overdrive gear is preferred if you engine has the power.

Wider tiers have better traction.
