Group says assault shows it can strike anywhere.

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN

— The luxury hotel was considered one of the safest spots in the Afghan capital. Yet four gunmen walked in, proceeded to the restaurant and pulled out pistols hidden in their shoes. They killed nine people, including a journalist for a French news agency, his wife and two children who were shot in the head.

One child survived but was seriously wounded.

The Taliban boasted that the assault Thursday night shows they can strike anywhere, and Afghan officials issued a string of conflicting statements as they scrambled to explain how the attackers penetrated the Serena Hotel’s security.

It was a major embarrassment to government security forces less than two weeks before national elections and came on the heels of an uptick in bombings and shootings against foreigners in the capital, something that had been relatively rare.

The latest attack was particularly brazen because it was considered one of the best-protected sites for civilians in Kabul. Sheltered behind a nondescript wall, entrants must pass through a security room at the gate where they are patted down and go through a metal detector as bags are put through an X-ray machine and sometimes searched.

The attackers hid small pistols and ammunition in their shoes and socks, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi told reporters, but he could not say how the weapons went undetected. The hotel’s security has ignored beeps from the metal detector in the past.

The dead included five Afghans, two Canadians, an American and a Paraguayan.

Six people were wounded, including a child, a foreigner, two policemen, a hotel guard, and an Afghan lawmaker. The name of the American victim was not immediately released.

No idea what 'thanks obama' is suppose to mean, or that girl trying to zip up her jeans, but it just is yet another example of the loving, peaceful religion that IS islam.

JONGSSTRAW

Considering that Karzai recently released 70+ Taliban prisoners from prison and then scolded the U.S. in the process, I say fuck them and their "luxury hotel". The entire Afghanistan war has been a gigantic clusterfuck since Day 1. Every single thing we've done there has been wrong, starting when Bush gave the Taliban 30 days to hand over Bin Laden. I wonder which genius in the White House came up with that one. I'm sure Mullah Omar and Al Zawahiri are still laughing their asses off about that even after 13 years. Then, propping up drug lord and Taliban buddy Karzai, nation building in a place that has never been and doesn't know how to be a nation all while the freely-travelled Ho Chi Minh, er, I mean Pakistan Trail remains in place for easy access to kill American troops and launch terror attacks. We can't get out of that shithole soon enough.

The entire State Dept run war under the guise of 'being nice to them after we kick the shit out of them' has been a perpetual failure.

It's not working, and will never work.

Get in, kick ass, and then get out.

Should have been that way since day 1.

Frelling idiots.
