I think for some animals, a zoo is probably the best case scenario, but the larger animals are probably the ones suffering the most these days... I have seen elephants romping like puppies and pushing each other into the water (LOVED THAT) and I have seen elephants in the past that just made me sad. Our zoo here in town did the right thing and shipped their elephant to a retirement park years ago and I hope she died happy. They also had a hippo that just died at 57 years old, so they are doing some things right. There was a Jaguar that died of unknown causes recently and I feel sorry for the lions here, because I think predators need more space just to run and they usually end up in a space the size of a mobile home, but in general our zoo does a decent job... I've also been to most within a few hours drive and those have done a pretty good job...

I was wondering how the zoos around y'all fare?
Do you think they are doing a proper job??

Oh, and I'm not against culling the herd, but I think some of those kids in the second article were a wee bit young for that kinda thing. Someone was getting a macabre thrill out of the exhibitionism of it all.

They're better off in a Zoo then with PETA, they'd kill em then feed them to the poor.

Our zoo used to be sad and some of the small animal exhibits are still a bit claustrophobic, but they've done a lot of work into expending their exhibits and creating more space and a more natural feel for the animals.

Zoos are necessary institutions for replenishing populations of animals that would otherwise go extinct due to disease, climate changes, and poaching. By wholesale condemning them PETA misses the mark.

The killing of the baby giraffe shocked me, especially when it could have gone elsewhere and not been part of a breeding program.

There are zoos and zoos. It depends on their ethics and values. If they are about conservation and preventing extinction, then great. If they have decent habitats for animals, then also great.

If their animals have been captured in the wild for no other reason than entertainment, then boo.

Favorite phrase of mine... "Nothing is worse than an idea when it's the ONLY one you've got"

Covers a whole mess of groups.....

I dunno. I think some animals are happy in zoos and some aren't. I think we've come along way in habitat development from where we were. I think going for walks and looking at animals is far healthier than other activities that humans do, and personally, speaking for people who really can't participate in sports and a LOT of activities, zoos are almost necessary for the health of some people as an outlet. No, it doesn't excuse the fact that we cage 'em up, but as Brenda pointed out zoos also do good things like study behavior and help animals that are in trouble. Cages aren't great, but neither is being slaughtered by ignorant tribals. As I have pointed out many many times YOU CAN'T FIX HUMANS. But they can take care of a few of them and not let entire species be wiped out...

I don't trust any zoo - too many $ and humans involved.
You know what? I've never once seen any animal in any captivity and thought, "how majestic, how beautiful."
How many animals does it take to keep a species alive in captivity? For how long can that be sustained? All *safe* behind walls and living on our schedule.
I'm not being the least bit sentimental about animals either, nor anthropomorphic about them, the opposite in fact. Hell, I'm even being a bit selfish - it's another bad reflection of our own shitty behavior that I can't stand, saying how it's for kids, it's to generate interest and caring for animals... by confining them - huh? We really do a number on ourselves to think it's ok.

Pets.

Don't know what I think about zoos, particularly tonight...

Just about my favorite place ever as a kid outside of the Planetarium.

G: You're in good company with all the people in North Dakota who think letting their cats loose in -40 degree weather is a good idea because it's "natural."

I don't disagree with you on everything, but taken together this is essentially the kind of extremism that does more harm for animals than good.

Yes, I've had some issues with the neutering aspect - we wouldn't do that to most humans - and the slave issue. A carriage horse collapsed from cholic downtown last summer and it caused people a lot of questions and turmoil.

But at the same time, we HAVE improved the lives of both individual animals and whole species. We've also harmed some animals and whole species. But the former at least suggests that we can do better.
