DEVERSE

Hey, Ive been in a firefight before! Well, I was in a fire. Actually, I was fired from a fry-cook opportunity.

I guess it sort of proves that if you dress and act like a stereotype long enough you become that stereotype.

I only saw the show once or twice, but since it was about as entertaining as watching paint dry and after a few minutes of exposure to it I could actually feel my IQ dropping, I figured there was way better uses of my time than watching people act like they were imbecile rednecks.

Nope, not a surprise, it was inevitable something like this would happen. The only surprise I see is why so many watch the show and think that it is smart or "cool" or whatever to act like you are as dumb as a bag of hammers.

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face;
With stars to fill my dream;
I am a traveler of both time and space;
To be where I have been

I didn't. Don't watch the show, but my impression is that they were all pretty much live and let live sorts of folk.

Get any group of folks together, and rarely will they all agree on everything.

Per his comments... he's showing ignorance. In the truest sense. There is a good point, to criticizing how folks carry on with one another, and the trouble which can come of that. That's biblical and just common sense. But then to equate promiscuity, homosexuality into bestiality ?

Quote:

It's actually a fairly common stereotype used by the anti-gay types. You know what I'm talking about, hur hur they all have the AIDs because they sleep with everything with a Y chromosome that moves. Instead of, you know, the reality, where many of them want committed long-term relationships like most lonely isolated people in the world, and the reason why there's a higher prevalence of AIDs in the gay population is because certain methods are more effective at transmission.

And then there's the myth about how AIDs jumped from monkeys to humans because a gay guy had sex with one. So it's all lumped together into a very unflattering and offensive portrayal of gay people.

Then there's the whole thing about "the definition of marriage is between a man and a woman, and if we change that we usher in people marrying horses and dogs and cats living together and mass hysteria."

Which I recall you have argued yourself. But I'm pleased to see that you recognize that homosexuality and bestiality are not the same. The disagreement between us on gay marriage is not a matter of bigotry against gays, but more a matter of semantics.

As a side note, over the last week there have been talks in Utah about making polygamy legal again. It's funny as hell. Because it's not like the mormons are the first in line protesting any other kinds of non-traditional marriage practices or anything.

But, actually, I'm glad. I'm hoping that legalizing the institution will allow women in abusive situations to seek help without endangering their families. And I also hope this will help the young boys who are expelled from the communes because the old men don't want to share the women. We can drag the rot in their culture into the light now without destroying the culture itself.

I've never seen the show, because from any clips or previews I ever saw, I got the impression that "since it was about as entertaining as watching paint dry and after a few minutes of exposure to it I (would) actually feel my IQ dropping, I figured there was way better uses of my time than watching people act like they were imbecile rednecks.'

So Deverse, thank you for saving me from bothering (if I ever would have). What I DIDN'T realize until I read up on this instance, having seen so little before, is that it's a REALITY show?

And yes, the connection between bestiality and homosexuality is a common meme for The Right that they've pulled out over and over:
Quote:

Republicans Predict Fraud, Bestiality if Gay Marriage Is Legalized

Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, told a group of Tea Party supporters on a conference call that gay marriage would be a slippery slope to polygamy and bestiality. “When you say it’s not a man and a woman anymore, then why not, you know, somebody has a love for an animal or-?"

In a 2003 interview, former presidential primary candidate Rick Santorum mentioned it, along with pedophilia. “In every society, the definition of marriage has not ever, to my knowledge, included homosexuality,” Santorum told The Associated Press. “It’s not, you know, man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be. It is one thing.”

Quote:

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Wednesday appeared to suggest a link between the Supreme Court's rulings on gay marriage and marriage between a human and a non-human. "It is difficult, because if we have no laws on this, people will take it to one extension further -- does it have to be humans?" Paul said Wednesday in an interview with Glenn Beck.

Quote:

Dr. Ben Carson: "Marriage is between a man and a woman. It's a well-established, fundamental pillar of society and no group, be they gays, be they NAMBLA, be they people who believe in bestiality -- it doesn't matter what they are, they don't get to change the definition."

There's nothing new here, it's a tactic Republicans have been using for a long time to encourage a visceral reaction against gays. Most of the time they've had to either apologize or "clarify" that it's not what they "really meant", but they get it out there, which is the intent.

And of course they're lining up now to defend Robertson, falsely as it turns out:
Quote:

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) on Thursday became the latest politician to defend Phil Robertson, a cast member of the reality show "Duck Dynasty" who was suspended from the television network A&E after making graphic anti-gay comments and saying African-Americans were "singing and happy" before civil rights in the South. "

“Phil Robertson and his family are great citizens of the State of Louisiana. The politically correct crowd is tolerant of all viewpoints, except those they disagree with. I don’t agree with quite a bit of stuff I read in magazine interviews or see on TV. But I also acknowledge that this is a free country and everyone is entitled to express their views."

Quote:

Sarah Palin: "Free speech is an endangered species. Those “intolerants” hatin’ and taking on the Duck Dynasty patriarch for voicing his personal opinion are taking on all of us."

Quote:

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) joined Jindal and Palin in defending Robertson, writing on his Facebook page Thursday:

"Phil expressed his personal views and his own religious faith; for that, he was suspended from his job. In a free society, anyone is free to disagree with him--but the mainstream media should not behave as the thought police censoring the views with which they disagree."

And as to Robertson having been fired, bear in mind: "While the Constitution covers free speech from government interference, private businesses are generally free to punish their employees for what they say." Has nothing to do with the "mainstream media", has to do with a private enterprise. Or as one commenter to Palin's remarks wrote: "Sarah, free speech doesn't prevent or bar A&E from firing Robertson; this is a common misconception among the GOPTP."

Or another: "He said what he believed in and it was printed. No one is taking his free speech away. The TV network and his sponsors also has the right to pull his show."

Losing Your TV Job Is Not a First Amendment Issue

Sigh. I can’t believe we have to explain this, over and over, every time a media figure loses a job (or just gets a for-show suspension) over saying something stupid, but: Losing your job for saying something that embarrasses your private employer–even if that is a media outlet–is not a free speech issue. It is not a First Amendment issue. It may be dumb, it may be justified, but it is not a constitutional violation. People changing the channel or not buying your products because of what you said is not “censorship”; nor is losing a business deal for same.

Cable TV is not the government, thank God. But apparently some politicians both inside and outside the government could stand to reread the First Amendment. http://entertainment.time.com/2013/12/19/losing-your-tv-job-is-not-a-f

"A&E has a reality show that depends on the hoariest stereotypes – and yet features hilariously captivating human beings – located in the deep South. It’s a show riddled with humor and charm and redneck silliness. The point of it, so far as I can tell, is a kind of celebration of a culture where duck hunting is the primary religion, but where fundamentalist Christianity is also completely pervasive. (Too pervasive for the producers, apparently, because they edited out the saying of grace to make it non-denominational and actually edited in fake beeps to make it seem like the bearded clan swore a lot, even though they don’t.) . . .

Now I seriously don’t know what A&E were expecting when the patriarch Phil Robertson was interviewed by GQ. But surely the same set of expectations that one might have of an ostensibly liberal host of a political show would not be extended to someone whose political incorrectness was the whole point of his stardom. He’s a reality show character, for Pete’s sake. . . .

He’s not a spokesman for A&E any more than some soul-sucking social x-ray from the Real Housewives series is a spokeswoman for Bravo. Is he being fired for being out of character? Nah. He’s being fired for staying in character – a character A&E have nurtured and promoted and benefited from. Turning around and demanding a Duck Dynasty star suddenly become the equivalent of a Rachel Maddow guest is preposterous and unfair.

What Phil Robertson has given A&E is a dose of redneck reality. " – http://dish.andrewsullivan.com/2013/12/19/ae-cannot-bear-very-much-rea

Oh, that's EXCELLENTLY written, and very on point. As Wish titled this, how did they not see something like this coming? Given it's not a "character", it's a real person in a reality show, they had to have been pretty stupid not to look ahead and realize what would happen.

The rest of the article is equally on point:
Quote:

Quote:

“Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right … “

This is a fascinating glimpse into the fundamentalist mind. You’ll notice that, for the fundamentalist, all sin – when it comes down to it - starts with sex. This sexual obsession, as the Pope has rightly diagnosed it, is a mark of neurotic fundamentalism in Islam and Judaism as well as Christianity. And if all sin is rooted in sex, then the homosexual becomes the most depraved and evil individual in the cosmos. So you get this classic statement about sin: “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there.”

This emphasis is absolutely not orthodox Christianity. There is nothing primary about sexual sin as such in Christian doctrine. It sure can be powerfully sinful – but it’s not where sin starts. And to posit gay people as the true source of all moral corruption is to use eliminationist rhetoric and demonizing logic to soften up a small minority of people for exclusion, marginalization and, at some point, violence.

If you think I’m hyperventilating, ask yourself what the response would be if in talking about sin, Phil Robertson had said, “Start with Jewish behavior …” The argument would be totally recognizable, once very widespread, and deeply disturbing. What we’re seeing here – and it’s very much worth debating – is how fundamentalist religion seizes on recognizable, immoral minorities to shore up its own sense of righteousness. You can gussy it up – but it’s right there in front of our nose.

Then Robertson says something that tells us nothing except he has never had an honest conversation with a gay person about what it is to be gay. He simply assumes that all men must be heterosexual, and that making themselves have sex with another man must be so horrifying it mystifies him:
Quote:

“It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

No, it isn’t logical if it were a choice for a straight guy. But it isn’t. All we’re seeing here is the effect of cultural isolation. Mr Robertson would not be happy – indeed, rightly be extremely offended – if I reduced his entire family life and marriage to sex with a vagina.

"Amen".

It's certainly their right as his employer to fire him, or whatever, but it is, as the article said, "preposterous" not to have expected something like this. Think I'll put my money on their actions being "good p.r." and nothing more...look at all the attention it got them, and surely it will only enhance the audience for Duck Dynasty with a certain segment of the viewing public...

A&E has already butt heads w/ the family of their practice of saying PRAYER before dinner, and tried to get them to not do that. So in an interview OUTSIDE of the show, this guy goes and in-artfully gives his own personal opinions. If A&E feels it must separate itself from " these types ", then by all means, it's their right to do so. I'm told the family isn't too keen with doing the show with him on suspension anyways.

Umm, that's not true. Drunkenness, greed, lying... those are sins in their own right. His own words...

" The greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right … “

But since so much of our emotions are often connected with how we conduct our "social" affairs, it's only natural that promiscuity would a part of how he sees folks should be mindful of in how they act.

The Robertsons issued a statement yesterday that they will not do the show without Phil. A&E did what they thought they had to do. This may be the end of the show, at least on A&E. The Robertsons may take the show to another network. Either way, A&E has four years of shows they can re-run over and over and over as they already do ad infinitum. As long as they can continue to fill up the commercial time, everyone will be fine.

Kind of implied, since he thinks all gays are unnatural. And they do have their own law enforcement tag "homocide"... but I've yet to see evidence that gay people kill at a higher rate, and given the rage monkeys killing off whole families like stick people, they've got a ways to go to catch up, methinks...

I agree with Jong in that "this controversy may continue to grow and make that impossible (sic) for them. It's an interesting corporate and social conundrum ... what do you do when the goose that lays the golden egg also lays an occasional bomb."

I think A&E has "de-evolved" considerably over recent years; I used to watch some of its shows, but gave up completely as, like so many, they have gone so far the way of cheap-to-produce reality TV, which I abhor. It's been shown over and over that it's not actually "reality" TV, and in my opinion it's a way of filling air time inexpensively, most of it is lowest-common-denominator stuff utilizing sensationalism and people I don't enjoy watching.

And I have the same question Wish's Daily Mail article does: "This has led to some questioning whether executives at A&E were aware of Robertson's staunch views on homosexuality and if so, why did they green-light him and his family to star?"

I honestly wouldn't be surprised in the least if this whole thing was deliberate.

Has A&E ignored the comments he made, they would have gotten some coverage, and then been forgotten in a few days.

Now, they have pretty much everyone talking about them, with a new season premiering soon. And its virtually guaranteed at this point to get record-breaking viewership.

Then they get Phil to write a half-hearted apology, re-instate him, and it's business as usual, except they got millions and millions in free press.

The ducks are like "these guys have been tricking us for decades, and now you're angry?" #duckophobes

LOL !!

If the Duck Dynasty does leave A&E, then it'll likely end up somewhere else, like CMT or some such. It's a huge $$ maker, and will continue to be so, whether A&E carries it or not. Seriously, if you look at the programming for A&E, Duck Dynasty was a very curious match from the start.

A&E will make a deal with these guys FAST! This show prints money for the network.

Dear Cracker Barrel Customer:

When we made the decision to remove and evaluate certain Duck Dynasty items, we offended many of our loyal customers. Our intent was to avoid offending, but that’s just what we've done.

You told us we made a mistake. And, you weren't shy about it. You wrote, you called and you took to social media to express your thoughts and feelings. You flat out told us we were wrong.

We listened.

Today, we are putting all our Duck Dynasty products back in our stores.

And, we apologize for offending you.

We respect all individuals right to express their beliefs. We certainly did not mean to have anyone think different.

We sincerely hope you will continue to be part of our Cracker Barrel family.

I'm sure contrails are some how connected to both.

Edit - Had already been posted. My bad.

Watched the full video. * I am second *

interesting to see how the folks at A&E ( or the actual ones making the show ) were telling the Robertsons they wanted them to fight, bicker, cuss, basically to phony up some drama for the viewers consumption. Watch any " reality " show, and it's pretty clear that sort of stuff goes on a lot. Which is why I try to avoid those shows like the plague.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Yup...crackers.

I like Second's A&E "quote" better than the one they actually put out (like there was a chance in hell they'd be honest about it):
Quote:

The quack is back.

A&E announced Friday that it will "resume filming" the hit reality television show "Duck Dynasty" with star Phil Robertson following his indefinite suspension from the network last week for comments he made in an interview with GQ Magazine about gays, non-Christians, and African Americans. The network also promised it would work with Robertson to promote "unity, tolerance and acceptance among all people." A&E announced the decision to end Robertson's suspension with a statement provided to the Hollywood Reporter.

"Duck Dynasty is not a show about one man's views. It resonates with a large audience because it is a show about family… a family that America has come to love. As you might have seen in many episodes, they come together to reflect and pray for unity, tolerance and forgiveness. These are three values that we at A+E Networks also feel strongly about," the statement said. "So after discussions with the Robertson family, as well as consulting with numerous advocacy groups, A&E has decided to resume filming Duck Dynasty later this spring with the entire Robertson family."

In the interview, which appeared in the January issue of GQ, Robertson compared gay sex to "bestiality," implied non-Christian societies are more murderous, and suggested African-Americans were "happy" during the Jim Crow era. A&E's statement acknowledged the comments reflect Robertson's "personal views based on his own beliefs, and his own personal journey."

"While Phil’s comments made in the interview reflect his personal views based on his own beliefs, and his own personal journey, he and his family have publicly stated they regret the 'coarse language' he used and the mis-interpretation of his core beliefs based only on the article," said the statement. "He also made it clear he would 'never incite or encourage hate.' We at A+E Networks expressed our disappointment with his statements in the article, and reiterate that they are not views we hold."

Along with announcing the end of Robertson's suspension, A&E said it will launch a "national public service campaign" that will air on the network and will be dedicated to "promoting unity, tolerance and acceptance among all people." Additionally, an unnamed "A&E source" told the Hollywood Reporter that the network will work with Robertson and his family "to promote tolerance moving forward." http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/a-e-ends-duck-dynasty-star-phil-
