Some folks are REALLY not going to like this !

A finding in a study on the relationship between science literacy and political ideology surprised the Yale professor behind it: Tea party members know more science than non-tea partiers.

Yale law professor Dan Kahan posted on his blog this week that he analyzed the responses of more than 2,000 American adults recruited for another study and found that, on average, people who leaned liberal were more science literate than those who leaned conservative.

Kahan wrote that not only did the findings surprise him, they embarrassed him.
“I’ve got to confess, though, I found this result surprising. As I pushed the button to run the analysis on my computer, I fully expected I’d be shown a modest negative correlation between identifying with the Tea Party and science comprehension,” Kahan wrote.

“But then again, I don’t know a single person who identifies with the tea party,” he continued. “All my impressions come from watching cable tv — & I don’t watch Fox News very often — and reading the ‘paper’ (New York Times daily, plus a variety of politics-focused Internet sites like Huffington Post and POLITICO). I’m a little embarrassed, but mainly, I’m just glad that I no longer hold this particular mistaken view.”

Hardly germane to the point of the study, don't you agree ?

But to the point of false impressions...

A lot like what folks here do w/ conservatives. Paint them as all manner of things for which they really aren't.

I sense a theme here.

So you think that T Partiers in general know more about science, and that reflects well on you?

Well, to rephrase the author, I don't know about the Tea Party in general, but I do know about YOU. And you specifically know less about... well, anything.... than most people here. Since this is a statistical finding, I guess that puts you more than three standard deviations from the norm... either here on this website or when measured against the TP. Which is where I figured you were all along.

I *think* ? What difference does it make what my personal views are on this matter ? You're ignoring the YALE study which seems to dispute a long held view point of the Left, that TEA party types are nothing but ignorant rubes, who 'cling to their guns and bibles', and just watch FOX News.

And I don't need any study to validate what I already know of myself. My interest in the natural sciences goes back to before Reagan was elected. It has zero to do w/ the TEA party.

You project your dislike for me and my views, and just like the author, have a false impression of me. You do NOT know me, one jot, it seems.

It's clear, that when I present objective material on the issue of the TEA party, YOU can't help but make it a personal attack upon what I *know*, and my views.

*ETA - And as for your little thread on Firefly and Founding Fathers, it sounds real interesting. I'd even participate, were it not a false thread, presented under a false premise, and intent only to insult and mock myself and others.

You want serious, adult style conversation ? Fine. Knock off the attitude, and oh, btw, find that evidence of where you claim I'm a racist, or apologize. Until then, enjoy conversing w/ yourself on such 'serious' matters.

So he was embarrassed to learn that people in the Tea Party weren't as stupid as he thought they were? He's just another a lib douchebag with a left-wing axe to grind.

Actually, he's a rare bird, an HONEST liberal, who at least has the stones to admit that his prejudices were wrong.

Sincere humility in a Liberal. More scarce than Bigfoot sightings.

It amazing how honest they get AFTER elections and AFTER bad laws get passed, it isn't their "humility" they're worried about, it's their "credibility" they really care about. They have to cover their asses as the great unwashed begin to learn how phony they are.

Just so we're clear, in order of science literacy, it's conservatives on the bottom, t-pers middle, liberals brightest - check.

Drawing conclusions which weren't part of the study. That figures.

Liberals the brightest? You mean the phoniest, man made global warming is bullshit. Crackpots and snake oil salesmen like Al Gore who sell worthless carbon crdits not to save the planet, but to line his own pockets, OR sells his failed P.C. TV network to a country that made it's $ selling oil. Do you think Tea Partiers care some phony has found out they're not as stupid as he and libs think they are. Meanwhile you think people like Gore, Obama, Pelosi and Reid are brilliant? And you think liberals are the brightest? That's funny.

Yep, wondered about that, too! If you have no thoughts on the matter, why the f*ck are you posting? Sheer reflex?

So, you studied science? Took courses in college, you did? It's not that I "dislike" you, rappy, it's that you have nothing of substance to say, even on topics like economics.

Been down waaaaay too many of your postings where you fail to address critical issues, logical flaws, and the bulk of the data. And when you're in a corner, and you have no more singular examples left to cherry pick to "prove your point" (which demonstrates BTW you have no knowledge of the scientific method whatsoever ) you bail from the thread.

Yeppers, a total zero on all points. I may not know the T Party as a whole, but I know YOU quite well.

Wow, an excuse before you've even begun! I ask questions, rappy, but they're fair questions. I'm sorry that you feel that your beliefs can's stand up to questioning. But, that is the nature of all beliefs. Have fun with your religion, but don't expect any converts.

BTW- I'm hoping that SOME DAY you'll make it to the end of a real adult discussion without resorting to cherry picking, "nyah nyah nyah I cant' hear you", "I win! I win!", or bailing. If at ANY point you respond in an adult manner, I promise to go easy on you.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Went looking under google scholar for this paper - not to be found. Appparently it's not published. Either it's a timing thing, or his research is SO bad it was never even sent off for consideration. Knowing the reputation of politico - cherry picking its data and then imparting a heavy spin to it - I tracked down Kahan's blog to see what he REALLY posted: http://www.culturalcognition.net/blog/ Fairly near the beginning he posts this: "The 14 billion regular readers of this blog (exactly 2,503,232 of whom identity with the tea party) ..." 14 billion readers? There's only 7 billion people on the entire planet, many of whom are very old, very young, and especially very poor, and not on the internet. 14 billion readers? Was he drunk, or stoned when he posted this? Or joking? Deluded? A mathematical idiot? Hard to say. But it makes everything else hard to take with any level of seriousness. At all. Once I read that, I ground to a halt. I was ready to give him a fair reading. I just couldn't get past the idiocy.

KIKI thanks for checking on the provenance of the article.

Yanno, I had all kinds of interesting thoughts on the topic, but seeing as this was a rappy-thread, I figured it would be too complicated for the originator to understand. But, may as well continue with the thoughts I had, in case anyone else is interested and has relevant things to say.

The article wraps around with another article I read (of course can't find) which says that the more science a right-winger "knows", the further right s/he's likely to be. In other words, there are naive right-wingers and there are hardened right-wingers, and the two are not the same.

What this is based on is a common misunderstanding of "science". Many people.... liberals included.... think that science is a series of facts discovered by scientists. In other words, there are electrons and plastics and global climate shift and viruses and antibiotics and software.... all of the discoveries and events which make up our modern world. "Scientists" are treated like some kind of priesthood... rather than the apparatchiks who mediate between mere mortals and Gods, we have apparatchiks who mediate between mere mortals and The Universe.

Hubby, working as he does at a major University Chemistry Department, sees this all of the time.

But science isn't a series of facts. It's not a noun, it is- in essence- a verb. Science isn't something you "know", it's something you "DO".

As I see it, the T Partiers may have a larger collection of scientific "facts", but they use these "facts" like throwing stones, which they hurl at anyone that they see as an "authority". What they DON'T do is take the steps necessary to investigate in ways that guarantee ANY sort of correspondance with reality, because they assume that reality doens't exist... They assume that life consists of either information that they agree with (the Bible, Ayn Rand economics) or information they reject. But somehow, the notion of a real world has slipped past them.

Rappy, for you specifically: Your particular misunderstanding of science (the verb) is that you seem to think that ONE contradictory fact somehow undoes every other observation. It's like that single tree in Siberia... the one that every right winger spent so much time pointing to because it's tree-ring growth patterns didn't match the thousands of other data points which pointed in the other direction. Or the few odds and ends of degraded chemical munitions from 1993 which gives you the impetus to think that we Should have invaded Iraq because clearly Saddam posed an existential threat.

Yanno, sometimes great hypotheses are begun with individual observations. Origin of the species. Drfiting continental plates. The aquatic evolution of humans. The bell-tower clock and the train. But they are then borne out with MANY observations which the real world repeats over and over again, and which the old explanations can't explain.

That tree in Siberia? The global climate shift explanations deal with it perfectly well. Same with the lag between ice core CO2 and temperature. YOU just never look deeply enough into this to find out what's really true... you find the one or two "facts" that appeal to you and that's where you stop. But that's not science, and neither you nor the T Party actually DO science. If you did, your delusions would melt away, and only the real solid stuff would remain.
