Oh, Oonj doll, the otters are old news. We worked HARD at saving them--back when I was active, we had fishermen shooting them 'cuz they thought they were competing with their catch! You know what the trick was? Tourists. We made 'em a tourist attraction; Monterey adopted them, put them on their logo, made 'em part of the "tours" which included Cannery Row, etc., people made jewelry, otter earrings, otter pendants, otter notepads, otter EVERYTHING, and in a few years, damn, they were PROTECTING them, and even the fishermen (well, most of 'em) were working with us. Money: it works.

It was a real success story, but hell, this was back in the '80s, and their numbers in Monterey were 3,000 in the 1970s! Their original population was around 16,000 when man first started slaughtering them, so there's been no significant increase since my day. Nonetheless, I'm tickled whenever they get press.

The PROBLEM is that if their population averages 3,090 or more over three years, it puts them in danger of being de-listed as threatened. Hopefully Monterey values them highly enough now that there will never be a move to do so, but all it would take is one even medium-sized spill in Monterey Bay and you could kiss them all goodbye. So, like all things on the environmental/conservation front, it's a war we fight to win and win and win...until we lose.

Which is not to say "thank you"; like I said, I'm always tickled when they get press. And Monterey Aquarium being built in 1984 was a BIG help; they've been very active working with otter rescue and rehab. Marine Mammal Center, up here in Marin where I worked, works closely with them--any they rescue go straight there. MMC tried doing otter rehab themselves after their big rebuild in 1995, but it's too tricky (tho' they're still working on facilities for dolphins!); Monterey Aquarium has the know-how and has been at it long enough to have the best success, I'm a big fan of theirs.
