One analyst's take - Obama wants to prolong the war to make it attritional for all the US's regional enemies:

Quote:

Why is President Obama escalating U.S. involvement in the Syrian civil war? Dan Drezner offers this take, which he's been murmuring about occasionally for the past year:

[Obama's goal] is to ensnare Iran and Hezbollah into a protracted, resource-draining civil war, with as minimal costs as possible. This is exactly what the last two years have accomplished.... at an appalling toll in lives lost.

This policy doesn't require any course correction... so long as rebels are holding their own or winning. A faltering Assad simply forces Iran et al into doubling down and committing even more resources....For the low, low price of aiding and arming the rebels, the U.S. preoccupies all of its adversaries in the Middle East.

....Now let's be clear: to describe this as "morally questionable" would be an understatement. It's a policy that makes me very uncomfortable... until one considers the alternatives. What it's not, however, is a return to liberal hawkery.

In a nutshell, the idea here is that we want both sides to be evenly matched so the fighting continues as long as possible. That will weaken pretty much everyone we hate: Assad, Hezbollah, Iran, and the Al Qaeda groups among the rebels. As long as these folks continue killing each other, we're happy.

Is it a sign of terminal naiveté that I find myself unable to believe that this is conscious Obama administration policy? Or has Drezner simply been watching too much Game of Thrones?

It's not personal. It's just war.

Only took him 2 months ?

Are you saying this is a good development, then, and that you support more arms to this place ?

I'm saying it was stupid to draw a line in the sand, and then do nothing for weeks, months, and THEN to sent some flunky out to make the statement of arms going ,intead of appearing in the Rose Garden or before Congress himself.

Actually, I said it was a stupid threat to make in the 1st place, and he DID flounder and do nothing for 2 months. Hell, he's still done nothing, other than make more promises.

It looks like Obama has opted for "total fool" instead of "total wuss".

Do you remember the ration of shit George Bush (I) got when he stopped short of Baghdad in the FIRST invasion of Iraq? (Desert Storm 1991) A zillion people- repubs especially- groused long and loud that G Bush should have "finished the job". With GW Bush (Operation Iraqi Freedom 2003) as our leader, under the principles of "Nature abhors a vacuum" and "You break it, you buy it", we found out why Bush (1) didn't want to topple Saddam.

What good can possibly come of getting involved in Syria? I know Xtian Syrians, they are terrified of who comes after Bashar Al-Assad, and with good reason.

Quite seriously, if we were actually fighting for democracy or against Sharia governance, I would say that everything we've done in the middle east since 2000 has been worse than an unmitigated failure- it's been like shooting yourself in the foot, over and over and over... and then re-loading and doing it again.

We have missed the "stated" target so often that I can't help but question what is billed as "the" target. But if our real goal has been to create a serious of unstable oil-rich states under Sharia law, we've been marvelous, simply marvelous.

Do you have a cite for that "quote", or is that just another of your endless stream of made up "facts"?

"I supported Bush in 2000 and 2004 and intellegence [sic] had very little to do with that decision." - Hero

"I was wrong" - Hero, 2012

Wasn't intended to be 'classy'. Nor did I at any time claim they were MY words, or the words of Obama.

Seriously, what's your damage ?

If reminding folks that this President received the Nobel Peace Price before even taking office, and for having achieved absolutely nothing in the advancement of PEACE has you torqued, then ... tough.

Yes, like all your ilk, you STILL can't read. Anyone else would understand why I think you're a shit from my very, very short post. So, what's you're problem - no pictures with my post? Too many big words?

Here, let me help you out:

A man said that another man said some words, and you said that a third man said them.

This is you.

* No I didn't.

( Oh, are you referring to my Jay Carney comment ? Seriously ? Go read that again, and maybe you'll figure it out this time. )

Point of fact is... I never said WHO said them. I just posted them. It was your hot steaming pile for brains which concocted this bizarre 'he said he said he said' nonsense.

Your reading is too baby-like to know 'implied' - the word I used first.

Actually, I said it was a stupid threat to make in the 1st place, and he DID flounder and do nothing for 2 months. Hell, he's still done nothing, other than make more promises.
