In a simple experiment, researchers at the University of Chicago sought to find out whether a rat would release a fellow rat from an unpleasantly restrictive cage if it could. The answer was yes.

The free rat, occasionally hearing distress calls from its compatriot, learned to open the cage and did so with greater efficiency over time. It would release the other animal even if there wasn’t the payoff of a reunion with it. Astonishingly, if given access to a small hoard of chocolate chips, the free rat would usually save at least one treat for the captive— which is a lot to expect of a rat.

The researchers came to the unavoidable conclusion that what they were seeing was empathy— and apparently selfless behavior driven by that mental state.

Too bad humans are not as smart as rats.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

PN deserves recognition for bringing up an important topic in a relevant way. I mean, hey... look at those gorillas. Talk about an enfolding hug. Baby is just melting with comfort.

True enough, I was going to do so but ya beat me to the punch.
Given that I more or less "learned" empathy from animals, and damned sure don't have much for other humans, I am well aware of how cooperation and empathy is what makes for a superiour species.
It's also why I don't consider us one... yet.

The squirrels and raccons here have their own bizarre form of cooperation.
They share a lair space, you see, and during the day the squirrels leave one behind as a sentry to defend the lair and protect the sleeping raccons, and during the night the raccoons leave one behind to defend the lair and protect the sleeping squirrels.

Almost four years they've done this, through multiple generations, and despite the fact that the raccoon lair has sometimes been empty as raccoons expire or migrate, which makes me wonder just how the hell the "new" raccons which come to replace them in our little cycle of life figure this the hell out so quickly.

We had a deer herd with a pet fox or coyote as its guard dog.

Almost certainly a fox, John - outside of mating season they tend to wander, and I can see potential for a symbiosis there as foxes are kinda paranoid and the skittish deer would make good sentries while also not competing for the same food resources.
Coyotes on the other hand are more opportunists and could present a threat to deer, where a fox would not.

We do get the occasional fox and on a rare occasion a coyote around here, but they're VERY sneaky and skittish around humans, even I hardly spot them and when they realize they've been seen they haul ass - I prefer the foxes cause they eat the damn groundhogs which drive the maintanence guys up the wall by tearing up lawns and chewing up flowerbeds/gardens.

The foxes here walk right past me and eat with the cats. The coyotes play with the big dogs, when they aren't eating cats, small dogs, giant dogs, and small children.

Here's a coyote in front of our next door neighbor's house, shot on sight:

Lest we forget:

Pigs don't confine themselves to ridiculously small cages and give up their piglets at four weeks of age.

Animals don't voluntarily walk into slaughterhouses, they don't willingly stand there surrounded by the stench of death to have their throats slit.

Cows and goats don't disown their calves and kids in order to give their milk to humans.

Sheep don't walk their lambs up to the farmer and hand them over.

Male chicks don't throw themselves into a mincer or volunteer to be gassed at one day old.

Chickens, turkeys and ducks don't choose to spend their short lives in crowded filthy sheds living in their own excrement, and no animal wants to be artificially inseminated.

Animals don't choose a life like that or a premature death in a slaughterhouse.

Whether it's meat, dairy or eggs; farmers, slaughterhouses and supermarkets are dealing in stolen goods and stolen lives.

They are taking something that isn't theirs to take, and making money out of it.

All for an unhealthy product that humans don't need to survive (and will probably kill them).
