Hello,

I found these images compelling. We've had our own protests and clashes with authority, and will likely have them again. As the things we rely on and have become acustomed to are stripped away or decay on the foundation of uncertainty... how many bloody faces will we see on our own citizenry?

And I noted that this particular clash is about coal subsidies.

It occurred to me that conservatives might do away with fuel subsidies because of the need to cut spending. And liberals might do away with them because of the need to stop supporting environmentally hostile industries.

And so this kind of clash might happen under any sort of administration, as a difficult economy forces people to make difficult choices.

It makes me sad.

Yeah, well, Madrid - ever since Franco the spanish have been just a wee bit faster on the trigger against supposed injustices, and of course despite how that all went, the Catalonians still hold a lot of the old attitude, but spanish culture is kind of weird when it comes to protests, since a lot the older generation feels if it's worth picking up a sign, it's worth picking up a rifle then.
Which does kinda concern me, a bit, yes.

Also, coal subsidies, erk - some regulation (and one I appreciate) mandated that the power company tell us poor captive customers (since they're a goddamn government backed monopoly) exactly WHERE that power was coming from, and I was pretty friggin appalled at just how much of it comes from coal - this is inexcusable, but then utility companies are not known to be very well-behaved since their monopoly status insulates them many times from the logical consequences for their actions.

It does however piss me off when someone acts like they're doin the environment a favor by running an electric car, charged via coal-fired power plant, and producing thereby far, FAR more pollution-per-energy than a blasted petrol sucking SUV, just not from THEIR tailpipe....
Pry those damned big three automaker lobbyists offa congress for a couple minutes and stop allowing them to constantly rewrite "safety" regs which got nothing to do with safety and everything with keepin competition out, and we'd have TDI diesel hybrids with triple digit MPG standards easily, but noooo.

Hello,

I think we're using Nuclear out here, which carries its own concerns
(though I am excited about an upcoming solar plant.) My dream is to
cover the roof of my house with solar panels, powering my house and
charging my electic pickup truck.

So far, though, I haven't seen any car manufacturers embrace my dream
of the electric pickup truck. I think the entire length of the bed
could contain 4-6 inch tall batteries roofed by a rugged metal bedtop.
Maybe 5-6 millimeters of ridged steel. I bet you could get a decent
travel radius out of it.

But yes, America is majorly coal powered.

Let's say the skeptics are right to some extent, though, and
that EVs provide only marginal environmental benefits. Upgrades in
power-plant technology, along with the creation of more alternative
energy sources, would still make every EV cleaner. As green-car
enthusiasts are so fond of saying, it's a lot easier to control
emissions at a few power plants than at millions of tailpipes.

But if you break down the numbers, EVs still come out ahead of cars
featuring internal combustion engines, especially in terms of carbon dioxide emissions.

Hello,

Just found this article that raises your very concern, Frem. Apparently, EV's
are still a little better than gas, despite the source.

Hello,

Here's a nifty tool to show you where your energy comes from.
