Pelosi pushes back against Obama-backed free-trade agreements

By Mike Lillis - 08/03/11 03:07 PM ET

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi pushed back Wednesday against several pending free-trade agreements championed by President Obama.

The California Democrat signaled doubts that looming trade deals with South Korea, Panama and Colombia would benefit U.S. workers. President Obama on Tuesday called on Congress to approve the deals, which he and Republicans argue would create jobs.

“The White House may support it, but the Congress may have a different view,” Pelosi warned on MSNBC.

During a lengthy interview, MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell suggested that the long-delayed trade pacts “could have produced more jobs.”

Pelosi responded, “Well, that's debatable.”

Down with NAFTA et al. I'm pro terriffs, even though it may be inconvenient for me to get stuff at the Irish shop as easily.

Oh jeez. Free Trade. Yikes.

Wonder if this is Obama really, or Secretary of State Hillary. I'm guessing the later.

Of course, Obama will SAY that Congress needs to do its job, implying that he has little to no role in all this, and that it's the mean, just-say-no GOP refusing to play nice.

What he WON'T say is that fellow Dem Pelosi is the one putting the kibosh on all this.

Thanks. This is pretty well put. Presidents are always saying "congress needs to do its job" meaning "congress needs to buckle down and agree with me."

This is how the roman republic actually turned into the roman empire: rubber stamp senate, demanded and pressured for by the praetor.

...and here I always took it to mean stop throwing rehtoric around (both sides), come up with compromises and get things done.

Yup, Nick, me too. The idea of three branches was supposed to be so they'd work together, with no one branch running everything, for the good of the country. Instead one branch of the legislature has lorded it over the other more and more until now we've got gridlock, when the concept was SUPPOSED to be them working together to find compromises that benefit the country. Haven't seen THAT happen in quite a while! Gridlock means no progress, no improvement in the country, and the idea was to work together toward a better union. I know many would prefer less government--or no government (they think)--but I think government should be an evolving process able to deal with new things that come along and fix old things that are out of date.

And I believe the amount and type of "free trade" we've gotten thus far has COST far more jobs than it's created, so I hate it. Were it done some other way, maybe it would be a good thing for exports, but thus far, to me it's been a con. Once again, Obama goes down the wrong path...

And previous administration. Draw your own breakpoint.

Same thing with the Roman Empirel the switch didn't come in a single reign, both Julius and Augustus were sort of pseudo emperors, the loons that followed really pressed the absurd, but the storm had been brewing since the revolution of 93 BC

Nick

The question is *whose* to do list is getting done.

Good for Pelosi!

I wonder how many Republicans will stand with her, and against NAFTA/ CAFTA/ SHAFTA?

Yes, I meant to say that. I wonder if she believes, or is just angling for the tea party vote ;)

Seriously, if you sto to think about it, we agree more than we disagree on this board, we just focus too much on our disagreements.

You actually believe there is ANY chance of Pelosi doing or saying ANYTHING being her angling for the Tea Party vote?!?! Pelosi represents San Francisco, if you didn't know; the Tea Party is all but invisible in San Francisco, which is a staunchly Democratic city. What possible support could she be seeking from them??

Well yer certainly gettin your two pence worth outta me then, Nick - mind you I don't take it personal and find it somewhat gratifying to FOR ONCE argue a point with someone capable of actually arguing one instead of committing stupicide on someone who forgot to load mental ammunition before jumping into the fray.

Not that you'll get any mercy for it either...
But then I suspect you'd be insulted if you did.
