Some of TV's top executives from the past four decades may have gotten more than they bargained for when they agreed to be interviewed for a politically charged book that was released Tuesday, because video of their controversial remarks will soon be hitting the Internet.
The book makes the case that TV industry executives, writers and producers use their clout to advance a liberal political agenda. The author bases his thesis on, among other things, 39 taped interviews that he'll roll out piecemeal during the next three weeks.
The Hollywood Reporter obtained several of the not-yet-released clips. Each contains a snippet of an interview, usually some historical footage of the TV shows the interviewee was responsible for and, naturally, a plea to purchase the book, "Primetime Propaganda" by Ben Shapiro and published by Broad Side, an imprint of HarperCollins.
In one video, "Friends" co-creator Marta Kauffman says that when she cast Candace Gingrich-Jones, half-sister of Republican former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, as the minister of a lesbian wedding, "There was a bit of [a middle finger] in it to the right wing."
Kauffman also acknowledges she "put together a staff of mostly liberal people," which is another major point of Shapiro's book: that conservatives aren't welcome in Hollywood.
Maybe that's because they're "idiots" and have "medieval minds." At least that's what "Soap" and "Golden Girls" creator Susan Harris thinks of TV's conservative critics.
However, the ranks of dumb right-wingers has dwindled, according to Harris, whose video has her saying: "At least, you know, we put Obama in office, and so people, I think, are getting — have gotten — a little bit smarter."
Some of the videos have executives making rather obvious revelations, like when Larry Gelbart and Gene Reynolds talk about pacifist messages in "M*A*S*H" or when "MacGyver" producer Vin Di Bona says anti-gun messages were a recurring theme in that show...

Wulf, what is wrong with you? Are you on something?

"Libtards"--that's the only one that comes to mind, but my gawd, you and yours are FULL of things just as silly as FauxNews and TeaBaggers. If that post is an attempt at self-superiority, boy o boy, did it fail miserably!

The day you become capable of having an intelligent conversation with ANYONE here, rather than just posting idiocy and idiotic videos, someone might consider you an adult. Until then, you're just wasting our time.

DREAMTROVE

Anya went on quite a rant about this at some point, or rather Emma did. They have a point. These media outlets are extremely provincial, basically lower broadway and hollywood, which are just two streets, own our entertainment media.

About guns, it's not a conservative position, by itself, and so that's a logical fallacy.

"These things? Never useful" Buffy says many times, yet she finds them quite useful....

But there's nothing inherently conservative about it any more than there's something inherently liberal about being gay. That's the thing with wedge issues. Nonetheless, they have a solid point. I guess my counter would be that TV and film is not a state run enterprise, they're private corporations and they can do what they want, which is, in this case, to push a radical leftist agenda. I would say to any conservative concerned about this, rather than whine about it, start a media company, and make your own content.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

They did. They just call it "fair and balanced", and it's not entertaining enough to hold the attention of those they want to brainwash on the other side. Good enough for those who already believe the way they do, but the rest of us find it mildly amusing sometimes, mostly boring.

If individuals, as you said, want to put time and money into creating entertainment (even that which isn't particularly entertaining) to get their point across, exactly whose job is it to stop them? Aren't conservatives all in favor of private enterprise? Or don't they have the wherewithall to do it themselves? Is that the real complaint, that there's nothing comparable from the right? If so, that's their own fault...Murdoch did it, tho' his admittedly isn't that humorous or entertaining. So you're right, DT; if they want to whine about the left doing it, isn't that just what it is: whining?

I do indeed notice that actors tend to be more left wing, mainly on "moral" issues, though some are very liberal about everything. They seem to be more common than conservatives are in Hollywood, they are also noisier about their beliefs.

I find it interesting, have for a long time, that the meaning of the word "liberal" in politics has changed a lot in history, liberals in 19th century England were way different than liberals in the 21st century US. Just sayin, its interesting.

I tend not to care much what actors think of the world, unless they have actual political aspirations and they're really making an effort to learn about it and shift their career in that direction. Other than that I don't tend to care what they think. I don't really identify with actors, I identify with charactors, they're way more interesting to me.

Wow. All of the Hollyweird entertainment industry is equaled by Fox News? Really? My goodness you're really threatened by Fox, aren't you?
