Friends Remember DC Lobbyist Killed in Mysterious Fire

WASHINGTON - The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is now assisting D.C. Fire and EMS and D.C. Police with an investigation of a deadly fire that killed a key Washington lobbyist.

37-year-old Ashley Turton was killed in a fire as she backed out of her garage early Monday morning.

A spokesman for D.C. Fire and EMS says the ATF routinely helps out on most fire investigations because they bring in valuable resources. At this point, they are evaluating all possible scenarios, but have not determined a cause. Officials are also awaiting an autopsy report to determine the cause of death.

Officials do believe the BMW SUV that Turton was in initially had a low-impact crash which was followed by a fire. The airbags did not deploy.

Investigators say they're looking at all possible scenarios and are checking the vehicle maintenance records as well as whether the garage door was working.

At the same time, friends and colleagues are remembering Turton.

In the tough world of politics, she made her presence known with her insight and a smile. Turton worked as a lobbyist and had close ties to the White House. But if you talk to friends, she was the exception.

The 37-year-old was one half of a well-known and well-liked Washington power couple who accomplished a lot. Ashley's husband, Dan Turton, is the point person for the White House when it comes to moving legislation through Congress.

"She never let that change her personality. She was still a very regular person. The kind of person that if you met, you'd would think was a nice person and a smart person, but you wouldn't necessarily suspect that she had substantial connections to corridors of power," said Scott Segal, a lobbyist with Bracewell & Giuliani.

From Capitol Hill to K Street, she stood out first as a top staffer on the Hill, then as a lobbyist for Progress Energy.

She was a gentle giant in a tough business.

"It's hard to maintain your human instincts, your sense of fun, the ability to get along with other people and still be incisive and strategic,” said Segal. “She was all of those things. It's just a rare individual.”

Turton died tragically when her car caught fire in her garage as she was leaving home early Monday to announce a big energy merger.

Sources say investigators believe her SUV hit something, possibly a workbench as she maneuvered out of her garage. It was not until the huge fire was out that anyone realized she was inside the burned-out SUV.

"From everything that I've heard, there is no evidence of anything that is particularly out of the ordinary other than a completely tragic freak accident. But with that said, we owe it to her memory to know exactly what happened," Segal said.

Turton was a powerful force in D.C.'s political circles, but was also a charming neighbor on A Street in Southeast where she lived with her husband, four-year-old twin boys and two-year-old daughter.

A North Carolina native, friends and co-workers say she never lost her charm.

Friends say there has been an outpouring of support to Dan Turton as he moves forward with his three young children without their mother.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Oh, fucking bullpucky. Assassination has been possible (and DONE) under any President, pointing to Obama alone is assinine. It's also been done by many in the government who are NOT Presidents. We haven't heard anything about it being an assassination (not that we necessarily would), in the first place, and PN's title is as assinine as usual.

I believe you are referring to an American citizen collaborating with Al Quaida who has been targetted for death?

There is a SCOTUS decision going back to the 19th century that states that Constitutional protections only apply on sovereign territory of the United States. If you are in a foreign country it is perfectly legal for the government to kill you. Your only protections being the legal authority and political power of the country you happen to be in. Based on how far they want to extend themselves for an American.
