Most "city-type" jobs are in big companies. Many times, you either sit in a cubicle, or take orders from some old fart that wants no boat-rocking. No joking around! Follow the rules! A small infraction will result in TERMINATION!
In short- indivualism gets sorta crushed at work.

*BUT THEN*

You get out of work and step into your really cool car!

You take off those work clothes, and throw on that designer jacket & boots! You go home to your big TV to watch the Football game & cheer your team! You text you friends on YOUR PLAN!
You are an INDIVIDUAL!!! And you manifest this by what you BUY.

Watch the ads on TV.

They've co-opted individualism. And the need to express it is greater now than ever.

That is so win/win, eh?

I have prettymuch wound up relegated to exclusively covering site three, since yanno, I live there, and being the nightwatch in a neighborhood where the local crooks are pants-wetting terrified of me, there's almost a comic-book aspect about it these days - shit, I could probably get AWAY with a cape, I wanted to, cause the residents are so pleased to have the place this well protected they don't seem to care that I am vaguely evil and borderline crazy.

Hell, imma dress up as a damn Nazgul for halloween night, that'll be hi-larious.

And since it's my company, no cog, and no need to answer to anyone - just do the job, collect the money, and when you love the job and are given a completely free hand in how you do it, well, it's a blessing few share.

The money sucks though, but hey, it's enough to live on, and I get to do it MY way, so it's all good.

A friend of mine recently came up with an interesting theory: I gave a group of people a set of financial figures related to advertising (I used to do this sort of analysis for a job) And highlighted the anomalies in television and radio advertising. I said "on the level, it seems like the increase in sales for many of these large corporations would never merit the advertising expenditure. I can't assume their idiots, so I have to figure something else is going on, but can't figure out what.

After a few days thinking about it, various people from various walks of life came up with various explanations, such as "they're promoting the corporate image" or "their so disorganized they don't know they're losing money.

I discounted the first because while some ad campaigns do this, some hurt the companies image, and other clearly have no effect. Most must be doing something else. I discounted the second for a similar reason: This could be true of someone, but not everyone.

One housewife came up with this interesting hypothesis: she said "It's not intended to. It's a form of influence peddling. The directors of these corporations have some interest in influencing the content of the programming, be it news, entertainment or educational/informational programming.

What bothers me about ads is actually not that they influence the stupid, but that they waste my time. On television, 1/4 of all time is spend on ads, which means I have to set aside a larger block of time. Now that information pollution is creeping into the internet. Advertising is like time-taxation. Any amount of taxation in the system is going to decrease efficiency and cause decay.

Problem pretty much solved - even if you don't start with a pre-set blacklist, you'll figure out the primary offenders pretty quickly.

As for any whining about depriving sites of income, those sites and advertisers brought it upon themselves with their own conduct, not least of which is their cozy little relationship with Malware - but also in that making the assumption that they have a right to run THEIR code on YOUR hardware against your will is kind of offensive to a thinking person.

And we won't even go there about overlays, flashy-spinny, ads that SCREAM AT YOU on mouseover, and pages and pages of "content" which consists of a paragraph not much bigger than a postage stamp, surrounded by auto-refreshing, flashyspinny adverts, so the user dredges through piles and piles of crap by the page, to read a single article which would have easily fit on a single plaintext page in the correct font.

It's your hardware, your bandwidth - hell, it's your eyes and brain, and you got every right to decide what they are subjected to, regardless of law or someone elses morals cause a natural right exists in a place beyond law and morality.

But only if you are willing to ENFORCE it.

The term "Most "city-type" jobs" should have been clear in what it stated, and it's true, most large-city jobs are exactly what you described and work in exactly the same manner.

I tend to watch the few shows I do via our "On Demand" feature, wherein the only advertising is one ad per break and only advertising other shows. It's a wonderful alternative. I used to tape them, so I could fast forward through the commercials, and still do the shows that aren't carried On Demand. Then too, there's TIVO (which I don't have but also lets one ignore advertising, I believe?).

Bear in mind that in advertising, an offensive ad is considered as effective as any other; name recognition is achieved either way. And I was aghast that when I went to the movies recently (which I almost never do), advertising was creeping in THERE as well! We PAY for the tickets, dammit, that should excempt us from the offensiveness of Madison Avenue!
