Want to know if the government is really tracking you? If you find one of these tucked underneath your car, you can start freaking out.

A routine visit to the mechanic by a Redditor and his friend turned up this ominous-looking device nestled right next to the exhaust on his friend’s car.

After promptly ruling out a bomb, other Redditors helped correctly identify the black device as a Guardian ST820 – a GPS-tracking unit made by Cobham and used exclusively by the army and law enforcement. According to the poster, the friend’s (now dead) father had ties to the Muslim religious community and was the subject of quite a bit of FBI interest. That interest also extended to the son, who has supposedly been on an FBI watchlist since last year.

“Why my friend is being tracked is anyone’s guess, but the only thing I think it could be is his connection to his father,” he says. “The FBI tried to get in touch with my friend a few months ago and he referred them to his lawyer and hasn’t heard from them since.” Redditors have thus far suggested sending the unit to France, Uganda, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Yemen, Oceania, United Kingdom, Fiji, Estonia, Denmark and Somalia (in that order), the Chilean mine and Ron Paul’s car.

Here's a funny thing...

Quite a while ago we built this widget for a guy who lived in the backwoods to discourage animals from nesting under his jeep - basically a motion sensor and screamer, anything moves underneath the car and it kicks off a piercing squeal that drives the critter away, right ?

I think I might still have the plans somewhere around here, and might run them over to the geek farm later.

You think about it, it's the perfect defense against this sort of thing (especially as I recall it was DIRT cheap to build and install) - anyone tries to get under your car, it goes off, not to mention you could market it to old ladies afraid of running over the neighbors cat and whatnot.

Oh, and our tracking unit is MUCH smaller than that, btw.

That assumes you HAVE such a device in your car already.

Some of us don't.

Chris, I basically built the thing by hand. Twice. So far.

Remember, we're talking about a car that was never even available in this country with such "luxuries" as power windows, mirrors, or door locks, nor was cruise control offered, at any price.

Also, I replaced the "black box" (the ECU), AND we reprogrammed the new one with a few new tricks up its sleeve. You can do things like have dual chipsets that you can switch between - a performance mode and a "safe" mode, for instance, for when you need to get it through a state emissions inspection (not that I'd ever try to cheat the sniffer or anything like that), and you can add in "Launch Control" if you want. It's nothing fancy, no ABS-based brake controller or anything (again, no ABS was available on this car at any price, anywhere in the world) - you just set the PROM for a predetermined RPM, and when you hit the "Launch" button, you floor the accelerator, and it will rev to, say, 3500rpm AND HOLD THE REVS THERE, so you don't have to keep blipping the throttle or trying to hold it at the optimum revs with your foot. So you're holding the revs at a set level, and then you just sidestep the clutch - just let your foot slip off the side of it and let it pop. You get a tiny bit of wheelspin (less than a quarter of a second), and then the car just bolts forward. And as the clutch is released, it hits the cutoff switch and turns off launch control, leaving you free to rev all the way to the fuel cutoff (which I set at 7300rpm, up from the old redline of 6500rpm).

So, yeah. You wanna follow me, you really want to do it the old-fashioned way, and keep me in visual range. :)

But I could have some real fun with a police-planted GPS tracker. Go all over town at odd hours, to places like the capitol building, the governor's mansion, the airport, Camp Mabry, the local FBI office, the CIA's local haunts... and then go attach it to some random police car or city bus, just for shits and grins.

You sound like you have a great deal of experience with gays and with having things shoved up your ass. Other than your own head, I mean. ;)

Not likely either of my parents would have any use for such things, since they're both long dead.
