OBION COUNTY, Tenn. - Imagine your home catches fire but the local fire department won't respond, then watches it burn. That's exactly what happened to a local family tonight.

A local neighborhood is furious after firefighters watched as an Obion County, Tennessee, home burned to the ground.

The homeowner, Gene Cranick, said he offered to pay whatever it would take for firefighters to put out the flames, but was told it was too late. They wouldn't do anything to stop his house from burning.

Each year, Obion County residents must pay $75 if they want fire protection from the city of South Fulton. But the Cranicks did not pay.

The mayor said if homeowners don't pay, they're out of luck.

This fire went on for hours because garden hoses just wouldn't put it out. It wasn't until that fire spread to a neighbor's property, that anyone would respond.

Turns out, the neighbor had paid the fee.

"I thought they'd come out and put it out, even if you hadn't paid your $75, but I was wrong," said Gene Cranick.

Because of that, not much is left of Cranick's house.

They called 911 several times, and initially the South Fulton Fire Department would not come.

The Cranicks told 9-1-1 they would pay firefighters, whatever the cost, to stop the fire before it spread to their house.

"When I called I told them that. My grandson had already called there and he thought that when I got here I could get something done, I couldn't," Paulette Cranick.

It was only when a neighbor's field caught fire, a neighbor who had paid the county fire service fee, that the department responded. Gene Cranick asked the fire chief to make an exception and save his home, the chief wouldn't.

We asked him why.

He wouldn't talk to us and called police to have us escorted off the property. Police never came but firefighters quickly left the scene. Meanwhile, the Cranick home continued to burn.

We asked the mayor of South Fulton if the chief could have made an exception.

"Anybody that's not in the city of South Fulton, it's a service we offer, either they accept it or they don't," Mayor David Crocker said.

Friends and neighbors said it's a cruel and dangerous city policy but the Cranicks don't blame the firefighters themselves. They blame the people in charge.

"They're doing their job," Paulette Cranick said of the firefighters. "They're doing what they are told to do. It's not their fault."

To give you an idea of just how intense the feelings got in this situation, soon after the fire department returned to the station, the Obion County Sheriff's Department said someone went there and assaulted one of the firefighters.

The govt-contractor-owned building next door to me burned down in a towering inferno, 3 blocks from the fire station. This same billion-dollar contractor then had another "accident" 6 months later, burned down its HQ 1/8 mile from the fire station, getting a 2nd brand new building from its insurance co.

After seeing our big city FD inaction, my dream is to live in a concrete bunker.

2-guess people know how to get the fire department to go anywhere now, just say my paid up neighbors stuff is on fire...

3- I probably would have said my kid was in there, if just to watch them run around like the asshats they are and threaten to sue if they don't...

4-Not that I agree with the system, 'cause everyone goes through hard times- but they knew the rules.

5-Would home insurance pay up after that? The words "intentional negligence" come to mind...Doubt they had that paid up either.

6-Not all firefighters are arsonists, but I have read of quite a few, and I know people who know people who have worked the system that way. I only wish the arsonists would go around targeting derelict crack houses more often...

7-It's called masonry block, good stuff, no drafts, try it...

This is how liberal NY differs from conservative bumfuck Texas:

(Bear with me--it relates to the thread, but I have to tell the tale right.)

I've have a big ole juicy steak marinating in the fridge since the weekend, and tonight was the night to grill. I went outside, closed the door behind me cause it's a bit cold, started the grill, came back in. Went outside, put on the steak, came back in. Went outside, turned over the steak, back in. Went outside, took the big juicy, crispy edged steak off the grill, came back--

Oh wait. The door's locked. How the fuck did the door lock? I will never know. But there I am, outside with a big steak, no keys, no phone, and my apt is over the garage where my car is securely shut away, and there's no windows on the first floor. The tenants in the main house? Not home, or don't know how to reach the landlord. I'm fcuked.

So I go two doors down to a local pizza kitchen, ask to borrow a phone and phonebook to call a locksmith, and I'm not happy to think of the hour or two I'll have to wait, outside, for the locksmith to show.

It just happens that a very nice, clean-cut young man (who looked Middle Eastern, BTW) is hanging out in the pizza joint wearing a "City of (my city)* fire dept jacket. Yep, he's official, paid by my taxes.

So he walks back to my place, checks it out, calls it in, and I swear it's not 3 minutes before not one, but two fucking huge ladder firetrucks, lights on, as well as a fire dept van, lights on, pull up in the street. Four firemen come back, survey the scene, bring a ladder, and before my lovely steak is cold I'm inside again.

It's nice living in a bastion of civiliz-fucking-ation.

Though I can't stop laughing at the three fire dept vehicles all lined up because my stupid door locked itself. I feel so important LOL!

And the steak is tasty.

Secondly, we just love to pick on the small folk, er, I mean small town folk, don't we? It's like blaming the woman for a relationship's failure or blaming black people or Muslims for crime and violence. They can't read or use the internet right? They'll never know.

Sorry 'bout the rant, wasn't directed at you or any one person. I just get tired of hearing the 'small town people are savage ignoramuses and such.' I hear people used to say things like that about African American's back in the day before it we called it racism. In my opinion assuming the worst of the south or small towns based off of a few isolated incidents is just as bad (though perhaps not as severe) as believing every middle easterner or muslim is some nutjob jihadist. Okay, rant finished.

I don't think this kind of situation is unique to small towns. I'll bet some grossly negligent actions, or perhaps inactions, of state funded employees have happened in your shiney bastion of civilization as well. But down in the south, where you know most everybody, things like that are just a mite more personal. It's not as easy to just think of it in terms of numbers.

I grew up in a small town, HappyTrader. Spent 15 formative years there. While some of the people, as individuals, were lovely, there was a prevailing attitude of ignorance, resentment, and helplessness that I will NEVER go back to. I visited it last summer after more than a decade - yep, there's a few good ones who I have a soft spot for, and even a few pretty spots in town, but the place as a whole ain't for me. Shot me first. No kidding. I won't live like that again.

Did you ever read the buried novel about Smith County TX? I got a pdf copy off of wikileaks 2+ years ago, and it spelled things out in a way that reminded me of my old days. Try it, if any sites have it up for real. I'd like to base a novel off it, and not the watered down Holloywood BS that got into that movie RUSH. Nope. It should be a story a corruption by the head-up ass people in charge and the lengths the rest of us go through to survive.
