Poor Michael, he can't catch a break!
Quote:

Another prominent conservative is asking Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele to resign, calling his comments on the war in Afghanistan "deeply disappointing and wrong."

Liz Cheney, a former State Department official and daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, said in a statement released Saturday that Steele must go.

"RNC Chairman Michael Steele's comments about the war in Afghanistan were deeply disappointing and wrong," Cheney said. "The chairman of the Republican party must be unwavering in his support for American victory in the war on terror – a victory that cannot be accomplished if we do not prevail in Afghanistan. I endorse fully Bill Kristol's letter to Chairman Steele. It is time for Chairman Steele to step down."

Cheney, a founding member of Keep America Safe, a conservative advocacy group focused on national security and foreign policy issues, is not the first to call for Steele's resignation. On Friday, influential conservative and editor of the Weekly Standard William Kristol called on Steele to step down.

The controversy was sparked by Steele's comments made at a Republican fundraiser in Connecticut Thursday. A YouTube video shows the RNC chairman declaring of the war in Afghanistan, "This was a war of Obama's choosing."

"This is not something the United States actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in," he added.

That statement is at odds with the fact the United States led a NATO coalition with overwhelming public support to invade Afghanistan in the wake of the September 11 attacks.

Steele also appeared to suggest any conflict in Afghanistan may be unwinnable.

On Friday, the RNC defended Steele.

"The Chairman clearly supports our troops but believes that success of the war effort in Afghanistan requires the ongoing support of the American people," RNC Communications Director Doug Heye said.

And late Friday afternoon, Steele issued his own statement on the matter, saying that "During the 2008 Presidential campaign, Barack Obama made clear his belief that we should not fight in Iraq, but instead concentrate on Afghanistan. Now, as President, he has indeed shifted his focus to this region. That means this is his strategy. And, for the sake of the security of the free world, our country must give our troops the support necessary to win this war," Steele said.

Michael Steele is doing wonders for the mid-terms.

We've got Joe Barton apologizing to BP on behalf of the GOBP for their massive disaster.

We've got John Boehner saying he doesn't care about the little people because the Bush economic collapse was just "an ant". And then going after the elderly with his very own death panel.

Now we've got the chairman of the GOBP forcing Republicans to recommit to the war(s) and support the President, or oppose the war(s) and look like the chronic flip-floppers we've always known them to be.

Geezer,

Nah, it's not change, at least, it's a lack lf change I can believe in. This nonsense started in 1991. Cheney was dead set in invading Iraq and taking out Saddam and H.W, said "No, we can't do that, it's against international law and if we did, the world would hate us."

Well change didn't take too kindly to that so instead he got behind Perot and helped ensure a Clinton victory for which he was richly rewarded when Clinton awarded Cheney the quartermasters contract when Cheney was CEO of Halliburton, which made Cheney a Clintonista.

Clinton has never been opposed to G., W. Bush aka Cheneys front man,, which is why Bush's policies were near identical to Clintons, and also Obamas. Clinton and Bush are like peas in a pod, and now that Hillary is in charge, with Obama as the frontman, things are just as crooked as houses.

Cheney is supporting Cheney policy. Whomever is so unfortunate as to have ownership of the dog pile isn't really relevant here. Thats why Steele was begging GOP candidates not to take ownership of it, because here ain't no purpose to owning the dog pile that someone else has made.

I find that amusing. Barton got in trouble for the same reason many politicians get in trouble; he said out loud what his party is thinking but knows it would be stupid to say.

Whatsit, as to BP and Obama, . We always get this whine, when in actuality is exactly the opposite, and has been for a long time:

October 24, 2006:
Quote:

Big Oil's 10 favorite Congress members
Amount given by oil and gas industry
Hutchison, Kay Bailey, R-Texas , Senate, $258,361
Burns, Conrad, R-Mont. , Senate, $188,775
Santorum, Rick, R-Pa. , Senate, $188,120
Bode, Denise, R-Okla. , House, $153,650
Allen, George, R-Va. , Senate, $148,600
Talent, James M., R-Mo. , Senate, $147,470
Cornyn, John, R-Texas , Senate, $142,750
Barton, Joe, R-Texas , House, $138,450
Hastert, Dennis, R-Ill. , House, $122,200
Pombo, Richard, R-Calif. , House, $121,340

Data from the FEC as of Sept. 11, 2006. Compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics.

Then there’s McCain, Republican candidate for Prez: July 27, 2008
Quote:

....the oil industry, whose executives contributed $1.1 million to McCain's presidential campaign last month. Obama has taken at least $263,000 from oil company executives, family members and employees since entering the presidential race last year, including $46,000 last month.

August 4, 2008:
Quote:

"Whether the House is in session or not, the Republicans on the floor today have always gone out of their way to protect the oil companies that fund their campaigns," the Democratic memo says. "All told, the House Republicans leading this week’s efforts have taken more than $3 million in campaign contributions from Big Oil companies."

The memo doesn't lay out exactly how much money the oil industry has given to Democrats, but stats from the Center for Responsive Politics show the industry contributed 26 percent of its donations to Democrats and 74 percent to Republicans.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/thecrypt/0808/Dem_retort_Follow_the_oil_
money.html

September 30,2008:
Quote:

Republicans have historically been the industry’s favorite, bringing in as much as 82 percent of the contributions from oil and gas companies in the 2006 election cycle. Of the $12.3 million the industry has given to congressional candidates this cycle, Republicans have collected 75 percent. Nine of the top 10 Senate candidates and eight of the top 10 House candidates who have received the most oil money this cycle are Republicans.

May 24, 2010:
Quote:

More of BP's money has been heading to the campaigns of Republicans than Democrats. And as an industry, about three quarters of the oil and gas money has gone to Republicans since 1990. That disparity held true in the 2008 presidential campaign, as McCain and his running-mate Palin accepted $2.4 million in contributions from the oil industry, more than double the nearly $900,000 that went to Obama..
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2010/may/24/bp-liked-o
bama-oil-stained-sarah-palins-hands-too
/

As to Joe Barton, June 24, 2010:
Quote:

If you've been following the news lately, you couldn't possibly have missed the dustup over Congress' most oily member, Joe Barton (R-TX). Turns out he's the sole owner of the Texas Freedom Fund and he uses it to funnel vast sums of cash from Big Oil executives and lobbyists into competitive campaigns around the country, particularly into campaigns where filthy oil money might prove embarrassing to the recipients. Now, keep in mind that Barton has taken more money from Big Oil than any other member of the House-- by far: $1,447,880,
http://mydd.com/2010/6/24/republican

Yes, Obama took in more BP money than McCain, but:
Quote:

During the 2008 election cycle, Obama was the largest recipient of BP's largess; collecting $71,051 from BP employees (remember, Obama did not take any PAC money). By comparison, McCain, got $36,649 from BP. So Obama held a sizable edge in contributions from BP, even though in general BP sent more money to Republican candidates than Democrats that election cycle.

In all, the Obama campaign took in about $750 million. So while $71,051 from BP employees is nothing to scoff at, it was a relative drop in the bucket to his campaign coffers.

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2010/may/24/bp-liked-o
bama-oil-stained-sarah-palins-hands-too
/

So let’s knock off that shit and get some perspective, shall we? HISTORICALLY the oil and gas industry has contributed far more to Republican than Democrat candidates. Don't throw out bullshit, Whatsit--How come we don't hear complaints from the you about how MUCH the Republicans get?

I could snark like you: "I bet you didn't know that because you're a Republican", except I'm pretty sure you DID know. There's the difference; Dems know AND COMPLAIN about it; Repubs either don't want to know or don't want to admit it, and keep their mouths shut.

They continue to eat their own, but at least it's not a tow-the-line, unilateral condemnation, I guess there's something to be said for that:
Quote:

Republicans lined up on opposite sides Sunday over comments by the chairman of the Republican National Committee that the Afghanistan war launched by former President George W. Bush was "of (President Barack) Obama's choosing" and may be unwinnable.

Speaking from Afghanistan, GOP Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina lambasted Michael Steele for the comments, which McCain called "wildly inaccurate" and Graham characterized as "uninformed, unnecessary, unwise, untimely," while follow Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina said Steele should apologize to the military.

However, conservative GOP Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, in a statement to CNN, supported Steele and said the RNC chairman's characterization of the war was correct.

"He is guiding the party in the right direction and we (the GOP) are on the verge of victory this fall," said Paul, who mounted an unsuccessful bid for the GOP presidential nomination in 2008. "Chairman Steele should not back off. He is giving the country, especially young people, hope as he speaks truth about this war."

On the other hand, Steele said this was "Obama's war" and that "This is not something the United States actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in." Both of those are lies; Dumbya started the war, which would have gone after the ACTUAL culprits of 9/11, and at the time the government and American people were enthusiastic about it. That Obama is continuing it is untenable, but that doesn't make it "Obama's War" except in Republican talking points.

Poor, poor Michael. Even when he tries to blame it on Obama, he gets in hot water with his own party!

"Lone wolf"? Seriously? He wasn't going "off script" or "rogue" (or whatever y'all are calling it this week) - he was reading off prepared remarks. The same terminology ( words like "shakedown" and "extortion" ) appeared in statements by other Republicans in the days preceding Barton's "lone wolf" outburst.

Would I want Barney Frank to become synonymous with the Democratic Party? You mean he's not? You say that as if you didn't realize and had never noticed that Barney Frank is the ONE person Rappy, PN, and the other right-wing asscracks around here want to use to portray how they think all Democrats behave.

If you don't see the GOP and BP hugging, you're not paying attention. House Minority Leader John Boehner already claimed that taxpayers should pay for the spill and cleanup rather than BP. That's more than a hug; that's a rub and tug, complete with a happy ending!

i'll give you that Barton caved and apologized(which wasnt neccessary). but the Boehner comment is way out of context. he was referring to the democrats genuis answer to a downturn in the economy, called the 'stimulus' plan, which was a trillion dollar waste of money that most definitely compounded the problem. they've since redistributed 400-500 billion dollars worth of wealth that has yet to even be created. so in that sense i tend to agree, i would say it was overkill and they completely missed the target

there have always been people on the right who have opposed these interventions. but this is like Cheney and the party campaigning against Rand Paul in the KY primary. the people voted, and Paul won over the Bush/Cheney agenda, in all its forms. i think Steele is being realistic, the fact is we are going bankrupt, and have to rethink our military committments around the world. unfortunately the anti-war left has been neutralized, theyre no wehere to be seen, while we're sanctioning Iran and bombing Pakistan and Yemen. id say both parties appear to be flip-floppers, but i think the real overall agenda(for a global order) is decided beyond the visible, elected party leadership. how else can you explain the inconsistencies?

because its obvious why they get the money- democrats are bad for business. its the democrat party that has us drilling in the middle of the ocean. the ideology is anti-growth, anti-free market and anti-capitalist. what business wants that? thats why we have lobbyists, because these corporations then use governments expansive authority, to manipulate the market to their own advantages. take GE or GM for example

one thing you may not know about BP.. is that they are a proponant of Cap and Trade legislation! so maybe this disasterous oil spill may prove to be of some benefit to someone after all

dems do complain about it, so they pass laws that increase the scope of government, and thereby the lobbyists, to write laws that will eventually undermine the free market and peoples liberties that you feel are being violated. do you people not see that? if the answer to everything was more government, more laws, more regulation, then the whole world should be living in bliss! im sure there are more laws now then ever.. and yet problems persist. why? could it be that not all government interventions are beneficial? could it be that some government interventions are counterproductive? there are good laws and bad laws, and the only constant is that every action has an equal and opposite reaction

The Republican party is, after all, the "capitalist" party, and as such, their ONLY interest is more money, more profit, greater market share, and who gives a fuck how they get it or who gets hurt in the process, right?

It's the Republican party that has BP and the other oil conglomerates drilling wherever, whenever they please, AND it's the GOP that has hamstrung the regulation process, starved regulatory agencies of funding, and let the industry right its own rules, which led directly to this disaster. This is a direct outgrowth of the "Drill, Baby, Drill!" mindset. This spill is what happens when you scream "Drill Here, Drill NOW!" and all your followers scream "YEAH!"

DT, Barton is of course subsidized by Big Oil. But he also ONLY got in trouble because he stupidly said straight out what the Republican politicians’ believe. Makes ‘em look bad. But it’s the mentality, and so much has been shown to prove how in the pocket of oil companies they are, that saying he’s a lone wolf is deliberately disingenuous.

Obviously you’re choosing to ignore, just as she did, that they’d be drilling on land, in shallow water AND in deep water as long as they can. The one does not obviate the other; they would be drilling everywhere, left to their own devices...and with the help of MMS and the big oil politicians (HUGELY on the right, as noted). By the way, they’re in favor of Cap and Trade because, as the bill stands right now, it’s to their advantage. Check it out.

You contradict yourself:
Quote:

write laws that will eventually undermine the free market and peoples liberties that you feel are being violated
If lobbyists are so good at getting government to write laws in their favor and buy politicians (especially, according to you, Democrats), then how are they undermining the free market? It’s got to be one way or the other; either Dems are killing free market or lobbyists are getting laws passed to enhance free market—or they cancel one another out. Which is it?

Mike’s right; the Republican politicians have been the ones to cause deregulation, have profited from it (we have so many recent examples it’s a joke), circumvented regulations in every imaginable way, lobbied against any regulation, and prostituted (in some ways literally) government agencies like MMS to enhance their profits at the cost of safety and even common sense at times. Try tho’ you might, you can no more make a valid case for blaming the Dems for the Gulf gusherfuck than Palin or any of the other big-oil-bought politicians can.

Your arguments are specious in the face of history and reality.
