Antarctic glacier melt maybe 'not due to climate change'.

British and international boffins, having probed an Antarctic glacier which is thought to be a major cause of rising sea levels worldwide, report that increased polar ice melting may not be driven by climate change.

The massive ice river in question is the Pine Island Glacier, aka PIG to those in the field.

“Estimates of Antarctica’s recent contributions to sea level rise have changed from near-zero to significant and increasing," says Stan Jacobs of Columbia uni in the States. "Increased melting of continental ice also appears to be the primary cause of persistent ocean freshening and other impacts."

The PIG has flowed more and more rapidly into the Amundsen Sea since scientists have begun monitoring it, adding fresh water to the world's oceans. Like certain other regions the glacier is bucking the overall south-polar trend which has actually seen hundreds of thousands of square kilometres of new sea ice accumulate around Antarctica in recent decades.

Many scientists have theorised that the PIG's accelerating flow is due to global warming. However, recent research - including surveys beneath the bottom of the floating, projecting ice sheet by Blighty's Autosub robot probe - indicate that this may not be the case. (The Autosub, famously, was powered by some 5,000 ordinary alkaline D-cell batteries on each trip beneath the ice, getting through some four tonnes of them during the research.)

It appears from the Autosub's under-ice surveys that the PIG's ice flow formerly ground its way out to sea across the top of a previously unknown rocky underwater ridge, which tended to hold it back. Many years ago, however, before the area was surveyed in much detail, the glacier's floating outflow sheet separated from the ridge top which it had been grinding away at for millennia and so picked up speed. This also allowed relatively warm sea water to get up under the sheet and so increase melting and ease of movement.

“The discovery of the ridge has raised new questions about whether the current loss of ice from Pine Island Glacier is caused by recent climate change or is a continuation of a longer-term process that began when the glacier disconnected from the ridge," says Dr Adrian Jenkins of the British Antarctic Survey.

Nothing seems to matter in this ongoing debate, because to many in the Gore camp there is absolutly no debate necessary. They traffic in fear and lies, and they demonize all legitimate criticism of their claims. They have the Media and Education on their side, so their propaganda never ceases. Even in the light of scientific tomfoolery like fudging statistics of temperature, etc, they are resolute in their religion. And make no mistake, for these people Global Warming IS their religion....and it also represent BILLIONS of dollars for them for their projects, careers, and ongoing falsifications.

Isn't climate change denial just another "religion", as you put it? And doesn't it represent TRILLIONS of dollars for deniers, their pet projects (like offshore drilling, coal mining, etc.), careers, and more? Isn't that why they MUST keep up the denial?

I'm still not clear how y'all think that pointing to a changing climate is somehow "proof" that climate change is not occurring.

On this matter, make no mistake. I want you to go fuck yourself long and hard, as well as anyone who agrees with you. I got no use for you. --Auraptor

Al Gore? What does the Pine Island Glacier science have to do with Al Gore? Why does anyone, anywhere, anywhen, ever harp on freaking Al Gore except to divert attention from the fact that ~98% of all scientists who actively study the Earth's climate (according to the US National Academy of Sciences, http://www.ucsusa.org/news/press_release/study-scientific-consensus-cl
imate-change-411.html
) now accept that global warming is real and human-caused?

As for the Pine Island Glacier (PIG), this is a total nonstory as regards climate change. It has nothing to do with the reality of global warming, which has for many years been established by numerous independent lines of evidence. I’m looking at the actual science paper right now, the new article in the journal Nature Geoscience on PIG melting. It says that all the melting in West Antarctica accounts for only about 10% of global sea-level rise — and the PIG glacier is not even all of that 10%. (I will mail a PDF of the article to anyone who asks me to.)

Actually reading the science, I find that the exact same scientists that the head-up-ass, denialist ignorance-hooters are now selectively quoting about the PIG, in the exact same paper that the hooters are waving around to support their flat-earth beliefs, say that glaciers are melting all around the Antarctic coast, so that what’s happening with this one glacier and its peculiar underwater ridge can't possibly explain the big picture. The article states,

“These site-specific processes [at PIG] notwithstanding, ice loss that extends beyond PIG and encompasses two neighbouring glacier basins implies a common cause . . . Analogous signatures of ice-sheet thinning have been observed at many locations around Antarctica where outlet glaciers terminate in the ocean.”

A “common cause” big enough to affect the whole continent -- not to mention Greenland, on the other side of the planet, whose melting, according to NASA, is accelerating ( http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/view.php?id=33750) and which is contributing up to 3 times as much to global sea-level rise as all of West Antarctica, including the PIG -- that would be global warming. Which continues unabated: NASA recently announced that the decade 2000-2009 was the warmest since direct measurements began in the 19th century ( http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2010/jan/HQ_10-017_Warmest_temps.html).

Nature Geoscience publishes original top-tier science on the causes, pace, extent, consequences, and mechanisms of global warming constantly. The denialists ignore all this material. Yet they start yowling and yipping like a pack of coyotes when the same journal publishes one single article that they can distort (unread, apparently) to protect their ideological bubble-universe. Pathetic.
