Hello,

I just read on CNN that the Coast Guard is doing some controlled burns of the oil. It's something I'd seen talked about, but I hadn't actually heard it was being implemented before.

Can any of our eco-experts lay down the cost/benefit of this?

I know they'd already tried it early on in the spill, but without any good results.

Far as I know, the air pollution aspect of burning it is less dangerous than the water pollution aspect of leaving it in the water and on the marshlands.

Think about it - gas spilled on the ground is hazardous waste, and requires a hazmat crew to clean it up properly. That same gas spilled into your car's engine emits some oxides of nitrogen and a little carbon monoxide, and some other pollutants, but in minute quantities.

Does that make sense?

But I still liked the way Jon Stewart put it on The Daily Show. "So you had a Rhode Island-sized lake of oil coming on shore, and now you have a Rhode Island-sized lake of oil ON FIRE coming onto your shores. That should work out well."
