Wow. You guys missed the point entirely.

He was saying, and its something I agree with, that you have the right as a property owner, to be descriminatory.

Now, hold on before you jump on that, and please... no sound bites.

Yes, you do have the right, to ban blacks, or white, gays, or straights, jews or muslims... as it is YOUR properyt and YOUR business. To do with as you see fit.

Now banning folks from entering, from purchasing your products, seems stupid doesnt it?

Why?

Because you cut out an entire customer base, AND when the sh*t hits the fan of what you are doing, noone would want to be seen at your place.

So, basically, your business fails.

Open market.

You see, the government should never try to solve "social" problems. Its up to the society to do that AND, anytime the gov. tries to "fix" a scoial problem... they fail and usually make it worse.

And as to the whole slavery thing? hell, France did a better job of it and didn't have to fight a war over it either.

You let people solve their own issues, and it ends up better than any law could make it.

By the way, just as a note... you guys DO know that the Civil War was not really about slavery, right?

In the end, people have the right to be stupid, they have the right to do as they see fit with their property, and having gov. trying to "fix" things usually just makes them worse.

Let people be people and they ahve a tendancy to solve their own problems, musch better than any law could ever do.

I saw Paul being interviewed by Maddow, who kept trying to get him to answer one single question: Should there be laws to ensure decent treatment of people in PRIVATE businesses, as in he was against the Civil Rights Act only because it imposed civil rights on people who frequent private businesses.

He dodged, he danced, he quick-stepped; he never answered. All he did was proclaim over and over that he was against discrimination of ANY kind, etc., etc., and ended up calling her trying to get an answer out of him a "political ploy". It's not a political ploy, it's the biggest question mark about him in my opinion.

His answer, never spoken and dodged so determinedly, is clear. If a private business what's to do ANYTHING, he's against curtailing it in any way, especially the government doing so.

Ergo, he is against punishing employers for hiring illegal aliens; in fact he's FOR them doingso, if they want to. He's for businesses to make as much profit as they want, any way they want, including banks and financial institutions bringing this country to the brink of bankruptcy. He was obviously against bailouts, which means he doesn't mind people being destroyed by the actions of conscionsless wheeler-dealers who knew how to play them and made tons of money off their suffering. He is for private enterprise being able to discriminate against any race, sex, religion or anything else. He is for allowing any private enterprise to do anything they want to do, apparently.

That kills him for me. Anyone so blind as to not be able to see that the government sometimes IS there for our protection, and that civil rights wouldn't have been obtained WITHOUT government interference, and taht corporations shouldn't have carte blanche to do anything and everything they like in any way they like, is blind, a tool of corporations, and deluded. I have nothing against someone believing in something, but "all things in moderation", and he's an extremist.

It's totally telling that he celebrated his primary victory at an exclusive country club. Anyone who thinks he's either a man of the people or has the people's interests at heart is delusional.

If you get your wish, little tiny wind, and everyone thought like Rand Paul, you'd find yourself a slave in very short time to corporate interests, even more than we all are NOW. You won't believe me and I already know what your answer will be, which matters not one whit. It's the truth, because business left to its own devices will abuse anyone and everything to increase their profits.

As Rand Paul sees it, BP doesn't owe anyone a penny--oh, MORALLY they do, but nothing should be done to force them to if they don't want to. No doubt he also would be in favor of doing away with any regulatory agency (a REAL one, I mean, not MMS!) that would protect the country and its people from disaster.

You can have him. He'll go down in flames anyway, so it's a moot point. You are SO self-deluded it's amazing, your world is totally and completely black and white, and you can't see the real world to save your own life.

I'm with Sig on this one; neither extreme is healthy, and Rand Paul represents the severest extreme possible.

Now, having said all that, Wulfie insists that I'm "missing the point". I really don't think I am. I count Tuesday night as a solid win for progressives everywhere in the country. In Pennsylvania, we got rid of an old-line Republican turncoat, and got a lifelong Democrat running for his spot, which is a definite win for the left.

In Arkansas, we forced a corporatist "moderate" Democrat into a runoff election with a more progressive (yet still moderate) Democrat. Again, the needle shifts to the left on this one. Either of them would likely get crushed by a Republican in this race this year, but at least now there's someone there that progressives can support without feeling like they need SoulBleach™ to cleanse themselves afterwards, or a good old-fashioned Silkwood Shower, complete with the wire brushes.

Back to Pennsylvania, where an honest-to-goodness Democrat outright WON the Congressional seat formerly held by the late Jack Murtha, in a district that voted for McCain in '08 and has been trending Republican since the '08 election. That's a solid win for progressives.

Now down to Old Kentucky, where Rand Paul handily beat Mitch McConnell's hand-picked would-be successor to Jim Bunning's senate seat in a primary race. Paul won the primary, but the democrat he's up against won his primary with over 22,000 votes more than Dr. Paul amassed in his "landslide". That makes this one a real Kentucky horse race. And it's still a positive for progressives. How, you ask, can a race where the Tea Party-backed candidate won his primary so handily be considered a victory for progressives? Easy. He's not the old-line conservative Republican pick. That's good for liberals. He's vulnerable because he doesn't have the old boys' network in his pocket (although they ARE lining up to jump into his pocket; even McConnell want to be his new "bestest friend"!) And, consider just for a moment Wulfie's idea that it's NOT about parties. Well, maybe, just MAYBE, Rand Paul will win outright, and he WON'T toe the old Republican party line, and he WON'T be in the pocket of the Democratic National Committee; he won't have a solid base to caucus with, but he CAN vote for or against virtually ANYTHING, as he feels his conscience and his constituents demand of him. As such, he could be a boon to progressives simply by NOT holding the same old line on the right.

If nothing else, he could be a breath of fresh air for the Senate. For all the hype, Scott Brown hasn't been that vaunted "41st vote" the right wanted so badly. What makes them think Rand Paul would carry their water for them, if Scott Brown won't?

Oh, and as an added bonus to progressives, Blanche Lincoln, in a move aimed purely at pandering to progressives in a vain effort to garner support from the left, proposed an amendment to the financial reform bill that is much stronger and much further to the left than she has ever gone before. And the conventional wisdom was that she'd let it die an undignified death once the election was over, because win or lose, she didn't need that kind of thing hanging around her neck and pissing off her big money donors. Now she's going to have to stick with it for another three weeks at least, until the runoff election is over. So I'm sure the Republicans will try their hardest to delay and stall, hoping that amendment will die before the completed bill can come up for a vote.

All in all, a pretty good week for progressives and liberals! And November is shaping up to be even better. :)

I agree with a lot of that (tho' I'm not sure about a "breath of fresh air"...I don't think he'll win, tho'). But I think it's a more mixed message to both parties; the two things I do note are that it's an indication the Repubs aren't going to do as well as they've been crowing--and taking back the House is a stretch--and I think the message is "no incumbents or insiders" more than anything. I'm not sure that's a good thing, since novices mixed with old timers might have a tough time getting by.

We'll just have to see I guess...
