Pfftth, if you leave backdoors in for the alphabet goons, other people are going to use them, it's just that simple.

Long prior to the Patriot Act, just after the FBI was given the grand tour of the soviet SORM-II system by the GRU, and came back absolutely drooling at the uses/abuses they could put it to, before they even came up with Carnivore, they had an experiment with an up and coming mobile phone company - a test to see if using a hardwired back door could be spun as a legitimate excuse under the cover of busting drug dealers, since by then they had tipped to the fact that (before all this was done electronically at the source) prettymuch every pay phone in any major city was bugged, at great cost to the taxpayer, mind you...

Well, before they even got it off the ground some hackers discovered the backdoor and ran up tremendous charges on the phones of the poor unaware saps who had the phones - and worse, when they tried to complain, the company stonewalled them because the FBI put the squeeze on them to keep the secret, eventually resulting in most of them folk pitching the phones in the trash and blowing off the bills, and soon after the mobile phone company went bankrupt, left swinging in the breeze by the feds when they were no longer useful.

It was prettymuch an unmitigated disaster, and yet, despite the complete and total failure of the idea, they went right on ahead and kept doin things of this nature, and the phone companies went right on denying it - we had a few stalker problems related to that, including one jackass who worked for a mobile provider using them to really terrorise one girl and her family while the company continually denied the phones and system even had those capabilities - thankfully we got his ass busted on something else, but this kind of thing is a serious pain in the ass.

I'm surprised you didn't bring up the ZoneAlarm fiasco, John - considering your pet peeves, and given the nationality of the front company who bought it out (Checkpoint), and then used the firewall itself to spy on people for it's intelligence service, something that got almost no press coverage whatever.

Anyhows, just about any american hardware or software you can buy today has great gaping security holes in it cause of them mandatory backdoors (that'd be Clintons fault, under CALEA) since that crap has to be CALEA compliant.

And even if you COULD close the backdoors, it's illegal to do so, under both CALEA and the DMCA.

This is like mandating that one of your car doors must not be lockable in case a cop needs to search your car, and then blaming YOU when some shithead exploits that to steal it - the responsibility should go to the folk who mandated the liability in the first place.

This is also, why when I buy software I get it from Finland, Iceland, or the Russians, all of whom have a *very* nasty opinion of the idea, the latter in particular cause they've seen the end results enough times to know better - that's why Kaspersky utterly *REFUSED* to backdoor their software for the convenience of UK officials, and got quite snippy about it in an interview, which prolly did wonders for their sales figures.

Seriously, there's tons on the topic to read.

Anyhows, you put a backdoor in, folks are GOING to exploit it, it's the nature of the technology.

I tend to favor low-tech and hardware solutions, and sensitive data is ported via shielded token ring cable to a second machine, and there's a box in the middle of that cable with a pin-ring lock - if you do not have the key, put it in that lock, and turn it, then there is PHYSICALLY no method by which to access it, the keyboard and other inputs have been unsoldered and removed from the mainboard, the casing is tamper proof, boobytrapped, and the token ring is input-only besides - if you want data OUT of that box, only a serial port cable and the right hardware config in combination with an RSA code will get it.

While perhaps primitive, there's a certain beauty and elegance to a hardware solution, and the snarky satisfaction that no matter how good some hacker or cracker is, they're just wasting their time since the hardware they're trying to access is physically disconnected from the system.
