Dog attacks police car

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - A makeshift lock on a chain link fence was no match for the dog employees at Mann's Welding call Winston.

The 80-pound pit bull mix managed to break free Sunday. That's when Michael Emerling received a call from police.

"When they said he attacked a car," said Emerling, "I wasn't prepared for what I saw."

Winston chewed the front bumper of a patrol car completely off, bit through two tires, and left teeth marks in the side panel of the vehicle.

The Chattanooga Police Officer behind the wheel was clocking speed when Winston launched his attack.

The Officer was sitting in his car, filling out a report when he says the car began shaking. That's when he got out of the car and discovered the dog attacking his car.

The Officer used pepper spray, and then a stun gun but not even that could stop the dog.

"The dog apparently rolled over and started chewing on the prongs, pulling them out of his skin," said Officer Rebecca Royval, spokesperson for CPD, "then he kept going."

Royval says when back up arrived Winston then chewed the tires of the other patrol car.

Eventually the dog was captured by animal control officers, with the help of one of his owners.

"Obviously at some point yesterday he was not a nice dog," said Emerling, "but previous to that he was very sweet."

Emerling says Winston will occasionally show aggression toward lawn equipment, but has never hurt anyone.

Still, after this incident Emerling says he can't risk what could happen if Winston attacks again.

"We can't take the chance that the next time something sets him off it won't be a car," said Emerling, "if it were a person -- we just can't take that risk."

Tonight it's unclear what the future holds for Emerling's pet. The dog is being held at the McKamey Animal Center. His owner has been cited, and will appear in court.

That's one patriotic dog. That cop should be put down for violating the Constitutions.

You get this, sometimes, with pets.

They decide some seemingly random object is evil and just go freaking berserk on it, Squirmy did that to the manifest out of a package from Amazon, to my amazement and confusion...

But LAWN EQUIPMENT ?

Yikes, and while it's a bit creepifyin in a way, the notion of a dog coming home with the bumper off a police car does kinda amuse me a lil bit.

Gotta give props to the cop for showing restraint and not shooting the dog though, often enough the badge bearers have a habit of blowing away folks pets even when they are compliant, so this one deserves some cred for making serious efforts to refrain from lethal force.

I'd say the owner is liable for repairs to the cruiser, though, along with some assurance that said pooch isn't going to get out so easily again.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Mebbe there's something wrong with the dog's brain. Some dogs have seizures which show up as unprovoked aggression.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - A pit bull mix in Tennessee has been sentenced to obedience training after his dogged attack on a local police car.

Winston didn't bite anybody, but he mauled a Chattanooga police car. The persistent pooch managed to tear off a section of the front bumper and damage the tires.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that a judge ruled that Winston had been a very bad dog. He was sentenced to obedience and canine good citizen classes, and he'll have to wear a tag that says he is "potentially dangerous."

Charges against his owner will be dismissed if the classes are completed successfully.

Owner Nancy Emerling said Winston got out of a fenced-in area at a welding shop March 14.

I'm picturing the judge doin that whole bullshit solemn speechifyin bit the juvie judges used to do to me for the heinous "crime" of self-defense, they'd point the gavel at you and stare over it all pompous and imposing...
"Now, young man..."*
And here I am, picturing a judge givin that speech to the dog, bwahahaha!

*PS, I absolutely HATE that term, mostly cause of the immensely patronising tone with which it was thrown at me, and calling me "mister" is pushin the berserk button for much the same reason - I'd rather be called "hey you" or "dickhead" than either one of them terms.

ETA: Wendy - "Hey, can we get one of them tags for you ?!"
Brat.

PN - stop sullying animals with your political leanings. Even Hitler had a loyal doggie. They are apolitical. Which is what makes them such great companion: they love you no matter what.

Also: holy shit.

The owner can consider himself extremely lucky that the dog didn't attack a person, that the dog wasn't killed outright and that the judge was so lenient in his sentence. He had better make damn sure the dog can be contained on his property in the future.

I don't care if the dog has health problems, I don't care if it's theoretically innocent and a victim of bad training. A dog out of control like this SHOULD have been shot, if other forms of subduing it weren't working. The injuries a person can sustain from a dog attack are absolutely horrific, and no laughing matter. Irresponsible pet ownership makes me furious.
