Bill requiring citizenship proof for presidential contenders passes House committee

PHOENIX — The House Government Committee voted Tuesday to require presidential contenders to prove to Arizona's secretary of state they're "natural born citizens" to get their names on the ballot.

The 6-1 vote came on the proposal by Rep. Judy Burges, R-Skull Valley, who said it's only fair to require those who want to lead our country prove they meet the standards of the U.S. Constitution. She said that, at the very least, it means producing a birth certificate.

"One must have a birth certificate if you're going to enroll your child in a sports program for school," Burges said. The same is true of passports.

Burges never mentioned President Obama during Tuesday's hearing or the controversy over whether he was actually born in Kenya and not Hawaii. Another legal theory of "birthers" who have challenged Obama's right to be president is that even if he was born in Hawaii, he lost his citizenship when his mother married an Indonesian and moved the family there.

But Burges previously told Capitol Media Services she has suspicions about Obama's loyalties, including bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia and a quote from his book — taken out of context — that "when it came down to it, he would be on the Muslim side."

Matt Benson, lobbyist for Secretary of State Ken Bennett, said there are all sorts of problems with HB 2441 which now goes to the full House.

First, he said it likely would bring a challenge that Arizona was illegally imposing its own standards on candidates for federal offices. Benson noted that federal courts previously struck down an attempt by Arizona to limit the terms of members of Congress.

Burges responded that 10 other states are considering similar proposals. "So it's not just Arizona," she said.

Benson pointed out, though, that what Burges wants isn't a simple matter of someone coming up with a birth certificate. It requires the secretary of state to examine documents proving eligibility and refuse to list that person on the ballot if there is "reasonable cause to believe the candidate does not meet the citizenship, age and residency requirements prescribed by law."

He said that provides no clear guideline for his agency to determine if, for example, a copy of a birth certificate is legally sufficient.

The state health department in Hawaii did produce a "short form" birth certificate for Obama, copies of which are available on the Internet. But that has not satisfied some who want to see the original which has never been released.

Linda Lingle, Hawaii's Republican governor, contends these originals are confidential and the state health director has released a statement that she has seen the original.

Say, isn't it the Republicans who rant, rave and rail against BIG government. Well, isn't this bill exactly what their talking about? Am I missing something here?

So, which is it to be?

BTW it doesn't surprise me that Arizona is leading the charge.

Well, darn... if they don't accept certified copies, I guess NOBODY can run.

Perhaps now is the time to allow people who are born in other countrys to run if they have people willing to vote them in.

Why shouldnt we just open the process to all citizens without worrying about where they come from as long as they are honest about it.

Would they be any worse than people we vote for now ?

Sigh...what can I say...Arizona! Surprised it wasn't Idaho, actually.

Well, at least if it holds, it'll stop all the controversy when he shows it to them...no, wait, it won't, will it? Birthers won't be convinced by ANYTHING, facts notwithstanding.

sigh...what can I say...Arizona...

Yup - we NEED a new department in our government, just to keep track of everyone's papers and identification, and to make sure that everyone has their papers in order at all times, and that their papers are always with them. This will, of course, require new security police as well. PN and the birthers will not object to this, because it will insure that ONLY "real" Americans can live here or run for office. All others must be sent to the camps.

Right, PN? That IS what you want, right?

What's going to be high-larious is when Arizona's entire election results are thrown out as invalid. :)

1) You're the sockpuppet. You're both offensive.

2) As to allowing others to run, sure thing - all you have to do is pass a Constitutional Amendment to change the Constitution of the United States.

3) You're actually making the real AURaptor look better. How sad is that?

Oooo, good, a quote to counter "Hero's" idiotic sig, thank you!

FakeCrappy, you are a non-entity. I wouldn't take you seriously for a second unless you owned up to who you are...possibly not even then. Faking being Crappy is a waste of energy, we know who you AREN'T!!

In general, however, I took two Aleve and took Choey down to Winchester Mystery House--love that place, grew up around it and it's the only conceivable reason I'd ever go back to Santa Clara (aka "Silicon") Valley. She loved it; anyone heard of it? It's a gas!

Damn, Niki - I *love* that place. Never been, just get fascinated seeing it on TV shows. It is definitely wild.

Meanwhile, take it easy and rest your hand.

And the quote actually is one of Hero's greatest moments, in his own words and spelling.

Ooo, goodie, someone who knows the place. It's a fantastic place--did you know it was the inspiration for Stephen King's Rose Red? I got a kick out of that, being a long-time Rose Red fan.

Well, I'm gonna have to put up a post, it's neat and maybe someone will enjoy it.

Hand is better; I broke it badly couple of years ago; surgery for the break and metal implant. Then they discovered the torn ligament; surgery again and metal removed (thankfully, it HURT!). It'll never be right and is kinda deformed; always hurts but you know how you get used to that. But if I do anything, heavy lifting, etc., it really blows up.

I cleaned our little pond the day before, which meant lifting rocks, hauling water, scrubbing--and tho' I wore my brace and tried to use my left hand, it blew up worse than any time since surgery. Turned out to be a good thing; couldn't do anything, so drove Choey to see the Winchester, which I've meant to do for months.

I had a feeling she'd get a kick out of it, and she did. Big round eyes and huge smile the whole way through. Hand is about half better today, good enuff so I can type with the brace on.

Getting old SUX!

Getting old does indeed suck, Niki - but from what I've seen, it beats the alternatives...

Glad to hear the hand is on the mend. I know how it goes.

Never read Rose Red, nor saw the miniseries. It just got to where I was so deeply disappointed with Stephen King, that I'd find myself flinging his books into the fireplace. "A *spider*?! A fucking SPIDER?!!! THAT'S YOUR SCARY SCARY MONSTER?!!"

But more info on the Winchester Mystery House is always welcome. Did parts of it burn recently, or was it spared?

No, Mike...it has an elaborate sprinkler system, so has never had a fire. It suffered from the '06 quake, but only one piece of plaster fell of one of the fireplaces in the Loma Prieta!

I put up the post, hope you enjoy it...you probably know most of it already. You should catch Rose Red...the shots of the mansion are amazing (it's not the Winchester, much bigger), and it's a fun story (doesn't even seem as long as it is; being a miniseries, it's hours long). It comes around regularly on the sci fi channel and I never miss it! He done good.

Thanx for well wishes on the hand...so much has gone wrong with my bod just the past few years (after NOTHING before), it's frustrating. But you're right, beats the alternative (ask me in a decade or so, if I live that long!).

You're right Kwicko, a new department would need to be established merely to keep track of everyone's papers (BTW that would mean more government, wouldn't it?).

But if only 'real' Americans are allowed then that would make for a pretty big 'camp'. You see, the Native Americans would be the true and real Americans born natural to this country. That would require a shitload of paperwork. I know the new Department of Real American Affairs would be created to weed out all the fakers.

As Yakov Smirnoff would say: "What a country!"

No worse than when towns in OR and other places declared Bush to be some sort of war criminal or had resolutions calling for his impeachment.

Watched a group of Mexicans walk into the mall in Knoxville and get treated better than me when I was moving up from South Carolina. I thought it was a joke. A good ol boy like this guy I am pretty sure is a US citizen, but when you can not even hardly speak the language and then the Mexicans walk away with a license you gotta wonder.

Tennessee THP sold fake I.D. "driver certificates" to 500,000 illegal aliens, marked "NOT VALID FOR IDENTIFICATION".

Only citizens are required to have birth certificates, whether you get a driver license or run for president.
