"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Investor's Business Daily, one of the latest in a long line of hard-right whacko sites along the lines of the New York Post and WorldNetDaily and FauxNews, was rather strongly trying to make their point about healthcare reform, and what it would mean it Americans...

Quote:

This is really rather amusing, the way in which an editorial from Investor's Business Daily uses the example of Stephen Hawking to show how health care is rationed in the UK. As numerous leftish blog site are pointing out, the entire idea really rather fails. Here's the original statement:
People such as scientist Stephen Hawking wouldn't have a chance in the U.K., where the National Health Service would say the life of this brilliant man, because of his physical handicaps, is essentially worthless.
This is of course nonsense. Hawking is not only British and a resident of Britain, he has been treated by the British NHS since his original diagnosis of Lou Gehrig's disease over 40 years ago.

The IBD.com website has retracted their boneheaded mistake. Apparently, they never realized Hawking was British because the voice synthesizer that he uses to communicate doesn't have a strong British accent.

Seriously, I know conservatives really, really, really, REALLY hate smart people and those with "elite" educations (like Princeton and Harvard, one would think, but apparently not if you got really shitty grades there...), and I know they seem to disdain all forms of science, but honestly, are there people in this modern age who still don't know the most basic details about Stephen Hawking?

Lol. Um. FAIL. IBD is an old school paper, they were built to compete with the WSJ by producing superior market data, and inferior articles, which they did. It's the brain? child of O'Neill, William maybe? A technical analyst.

I figure that most people who know how to play the market are doing that instead of trying to sell me on how they play the market.

Edit: Good change on the avatar
We'll work on the partisan attitude later

I like your kitty with the gun, hope it wasn't pointing at anything important--kitties are a might on the twitchy side...

Thanks, PJ - not my kittie, though. Nor my gun. Hopefully it's not pointing at anything more important than the camera, though - and it damned well better be unloaded and cleared!

Compliments and thanks to DreamTrove for finding that pic. I dig it. I sense a theme coming on. I had a kitty-sniper before, but this is a new one. Maybe I'll keep a rotating stock of sniperkitty pics to use!

My own cats have been trying to take me out for quite some time. They have this notion that if they can drop me, all the food is theirs. They're not real good at long-term planning, though, and haven't realized that they've already got me trained pretty well; I work my arse off to make sure that I keep my critters well fed, and if they pick me off, they're going hungry, pronto. I keep my weaponry away from them, though, just in case. They haven't proven very adept at planning my overthrow as yet - the best plan they've come up with is running down the stairs in front of me while I've got my hands full, running down a couple of steps, and then laying down across the stairs. I figured out how to go down stairs REAL slow when my hands are full, feeling for felines with my toes as I goes...

A couple of times, we've actually been in a state of war with each other. Much as it chagrins me to say it, I've never won one of these wars. Best I've ever achieved is an uneasy détente, whereby I give them food and they retaliate by not pooping in my shoes. You don't ever want to be in a state of war with your cats. It's a war you can't win unless you go to a mutual assured destruction (MAD) strategy.

So as it stands now, they spend their day plotting and planning my destruction, and I spend my time tossing little fake mice around the house to distract them and delay their planning sessions.

It's kinda funny - I notice so many of the hard-right talking points coming out of IBD that it makes me immediately question ANYTHING coming from that source. And junk like this really doesn't help their credibility at all.

I get the feeling that there's a definite strategy here, whereby some arch-conservative decides he'll take over a "respected" news source to give his propaganda a modicum of credibility, and then so quickly turns that source into an overtly obvious propaganda machine that it doesn't help their credibility, but rather destroys the old and established news outlet's reputation.

I see it at the Wall Street Journal, too.

Yeah, the WSJ was taken over in the 90s, before that, it was a good paper.

The problem is that these financial news sources are influenced heavily by corporations, and while republicans aren't always good for the market, they're good for corporate profits, and so they like the financial news to toe the line.

Yeah, I saw that one and got a really good giggle out of it. Sometimes politispeak gets really RUINED by facts, doesn't it? 'Specially when you open your yap without even checking it out!
