Keep the Shiny side up

Still no results from the Presidential election held last month. The consensus is that if Mugabe had won it would have been announced by now.

The opposition MDC Presidential candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai, who seems to have won a slim majority of the vote, is staying out of the country in fear for his life.

The MDC party won a majority in the House of Assembly, and in the Senate neither MDC or ZANU-PF have a majority. 23 House seat election votes are being recounted, but very slowly.

The other governments in the region are being very accommodating to Pres. Mugabe, a hero of the liberation struggle back in the 80's, and saying pretty much nothing. However, the people of South Africa have prevented a shipment of small arms ammo, mortar rounds and RPGs from China from being shipped to Zimbabwe by refusing to unload the ship and threatening roadblocks and civil disobediece.

Pro-ZANU-PF para-militaries and groups of "war veterans" have been terrorizing and beating suspected MDC supporters. There are reports of 10 or more deaths.

The Zimbabwe Federal police have raided both MDC headquarters and the HQ of the independent election monitoring body, arresting hundreds and confiscating computers, papers, etc.

Inflation is 100,000% or more and unemployment is 80%+. Millions are getting out of the country and crossing to South Africa and Mozambique.

Yeah, erm, how does that have anything to do with what I said? Britain isn't in the same region as Zimbabwe, I mean I know you're an American, but I'm not asking you to point out the two countries on a map, just to realise that North Western Europe and Southern Africa, are literally a world away from each other .

Actually I was referring to the numerous statements by Mugabe and his supporters, that there's nothing wrong and it's all British propaganda. Also the accusations that the MDC just want to re-establish colonial rule, backed by most likely forged letters pledging military support from Gordon Brown. But thanks for playing.

Of course, Mugabe won the election. That’s what you do when you’re an autocratic ruler - its in your job title. All they’re doing now is trying to figure out how to explain this to a population that thought they voted for someone.

Isn't it obvious?

"President Mugabe has ascertained that the British rigged the election, in a blatant effort to regain imperial control, but the he really won the election!"

That parts true. The British did rig the election.

So the recount is mostly complete and the MDC and independent parties still have a majority in the House of Assembly. Will Mugabe give it up, take his Swiss bank accounts, and retire to somewhere with no extradition - or will he fight to stay in power?

VETERAN

Don't squat with your spurs on.

Geez,

I think Mugabe values power more than money. But whether he is willing to let go or not, a lot of his henchman are reluctant to reliquish power because they are afraid of reprisals. I get the impression that Mugabe is no longer in complete control and his generals and party leaders will continue to fight as they see it's necessary for their survival.

We can hope that they fail and some sort of order is restored to a place that should be a breadbasket and not the famine stricken place it's become under Mugabe's vengeful policies.

Vet,

Mugabe's power jones is what I'm afraid of - that he'd take it all down with him rather of take the money and run.

The UN Ambassador to Zimbabwe is talking about a "government of national unity", which will keep Mugabe in the process until he can figure out how to steal it back.
