I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had the phone numbers of senior Iraqi officials stored in his cell phone, according to an Iraqi legislator.

Waiel Abdul-Latif, a member of former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi's party... did not give names of the officials. But he said they included ministry employees and members of parliament. He called for an investigation, saying Iraqis "cannot have one hand with the government and another with the terrorists."

Meanwhile, al-Zarqawi's wife told an Italian newspaper that al Qaeda leaders sold him out to the United States in exchange for a promise to let up in the search for Osama bin Laden. The woman, identified by La Repubblica as al-Zarqawi's first wife, said al Qaeda's top leadership reached a deal with U.S. intelligence because al Zarqawi had become too powerful. She claimed Sunni tribes and Jordanian secret services mediated the deal.

Huh. I'd heard of infighting within al Qaida, but I never saw the link to the Iraq government. I guess I should have seen that coming.

Lesson learned: Iraq is a snakepit of competing interests. ANYONE who gains a significant amount of power is likely to either become an enemy, a tool for someone else, or both. That being the case, what about al Sadr? He has very quietly accumulated a large amount of power among the Shiites both on the street and in Parliament.

As I do with all news, I look to see who released it, when they released it, and what purpose it might serve. (And I suggest you do the same. "News" almost always begins as some sort of self-interested release. Look at the number of "news" articles that begin "According to unnmaned sources..." or "according to a high White House official...") If you'll notice, this was released by a member of Ayad Allawi's party. Allawi, as you may recall, has deep ties to the CIA. Previous iterations of US involvement in Iraq leadership pitted the neocon's man (Chalabi) versus the CIA's man (Allawi). Recall that Chalabi's office in IRAQ was raided by the FBI (of all agencies).

You will also noticed that Zarqawi's widow said that he was sold out by some Sunnis. So, what does this portend? Disfavor by the USA with the proposed amnesty for killers of American soldiers? A coming purge of some Sunni's from Maliki's government? An attempt to carve the foreign fighters away from native insurgents?

What say you?

The same sort of thing happened during the Vietnam war... some within the South Viet government and military actually sided with the North, some just wanted the US to get screwed and some were in it for the money.....

Same thing with both sides really, look at the reasons why anyone has openly sided with the US or Britain... usually some kind of trade incentive or threat of trade reprisal

sad really

Its not that surprising that there would be some bad apples in the Iraqi leadership. Flying false colors or playing both sides must be fairly common in these circumstances.

I was surprised by his connections to the Baghdad Pizza Hut...no wonder they have'nt lost any drivers to IEDs.

And he also had a number he called nearly everyday in Tennessee listed only as "PN"... nobody has figured that one out yet.
