Any body else notice this?

I've seen some TV ads for Chevy Equinox (IIRC). They indicate that the base model price is about $24,000. But the price As Shown is over $36,000.
So the manufacturing efficiency gets the price of a whole SUV down to the range of compact cars. But they can pile on another 50% of the price with goodies, gadgets, gizmos, doodads.

Does anybody else find that to be unbalanced?

I don't find any problems with it, personally.

Is it shady? Probably.

People need to start reading the fine print. If they can't be bothered to, they get what they pay for and their signature is binding. I don't feel at all sorry for somebody who walks in planning to spend $25,000 and either wittingly or especially unwittingly walks out paying $11,000 more.

Even if you're "saving money" and buying a car without any bells and whistles, you're losing $5,000 the second you drive it off the lot if you buy new, and that's even if you did a good job haggling with them. They're a business, and they typically have a monopoly wherever you go.

Try opening your own new car business if you don't believe me. There's actually a great "Adam Ruins Everything" that details a lot of that scam. The local politicians everywhere are in on it. Even if they don't take any money for keeping these deals, the new car dealerships everywhere are dynasties that aren't going to every be broken down. The local tax revenue from these joints is so huge that they have a stranglehold on the local markets so there is no chance of competition.

The new home market is very similar to this now. I was actually very proud of my parents from recently walking away from a similar "deal" where they found out the stage home they were looking into in a new development was going to be about 35% more than the advertised prices of the homes were.

Maybe I'm finally rubbing off on them.

I don't see it as shady, just not understanding why people would spend half the price of the base vehicle, just for doodads and glitter.

Peer pressure? Good advertising campaigns? Ease of use? Safety features?

Probably a lot of reasons.

I used to buy into all of that BS up until about my mid 20's. I wasn't raised to be the way I am. I always thought my old man was a bit of a cheapskate when I grew up, now he calls me one.

I don't want a cell phone and I don't want all the tech in my car and I'm happy with a 20 year old car that has as little of it as possible. I know I'm never going to argue against OnStar and WiFi and USB ports on the dash for your music drives to people who love the tech and can't live without it anymore though.

Some people want to pay down their house right away. Other people would rather have all the gadgets they can't afford in a brand new car every few years and end up adding 50% more to the cost after paying off the bank loan too.

It is what it is.
