And he was only 47, what a shock. I'm sure most of L.A. is glad to see him go.

On the night of March 2, 1991, King and two passengers, Bryant Allen and Freddie Helms, were driving west on Foothill Freeway (Interstate 210) in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. Prior to driving on the Foothill Freeway, the three men had spent the night watching a basketball game and drinking at a friend's house in Los Angeles. After being tested five hours after the incident, King's blood-alcohol level was found to be just under the legal limit. This meant that his blood alcohol level can be estimated at approximately 0.19—which is almost two and a half times the legal limit in California—when he was driving. At 12:30 am, Officers Tim and Melanie Singer, a husband-and-wife duo of the California Highway Patrol, spotted King's car speeding. The officers then pursued King at high speeds, though the exact speed of the car is disputed. The initial police report stated that King had reached a speed of 117 miles per hour, but an LAPD officer later told reporters that the exact speed of King's car was closer to 90 miles per hour. According to King's own statements, he refused to pull the car over because he thought a driving under the influence test would violate his parole for a previous robbery conviction.

King exited the freeway, and the chase continued through residential streets at speeds allegedly ranging from 55 to 80 mph. By this point, several police cars and a helicopter had joined in the pursuit. After approximately eight miles, officers cornered King's car. The first five LAPD officers to arrive at the scene were Stacey Koon, Laurence Powell, Timothy Wind, Theodore Briseno and Rolando Solano.

Officer Tim Singer ordered King and his two passengers to exit the vehicle and lie face down on the ground. The two passengers complied and were taken into custody without incident. King initially remained in the car. When he finally did emerge, he acted bizarrely: giggling; patting the ground; and waving to the police helicopter overhead. King then grabbed his buttocks. Officer Melanie Singer momentarily thought he was reaching for a gun. She drew her gun and pointed it at King, ordering him to lie on the ground. King complied. Singer approached King with her gun drawn, preparing to make the arrest.

At this point, Sergeant Stacey Koon intervened and ordered Officer Melanie Singer to holster her weapon. LAPD officers are taught not to approach a suspect with a drawn gun, as there is a risk of the suspect gaining control of it if they get too close. Koon then ordered the four other LAPD officers at the scene—Briseno, Powell, Solano and Wind—to subdue and handcuff King in a manner called a "swarm", a technique that involves multiple officers grabbing a suspect with empty hands. As the officers attempted to do so, King physically resisted. King rose up, tossing Officers Powell and Briseno off his back. King then struck Officer Briseno in the chest. Seeing this, Koon ordered all of the officers to fall back. The officers later testified that they believed King was under the influence of the dissociative drug phencyclidine (PCP). King's toxicology results tested negative for PCP.

Any of that jog your memory ?

DUI, High speed car chase, failure to comply, fighting with officers...

Why didn't the cops beat the other two folks who were in the car w/ King ?

Oh, that's right... they did as they were instructed to do, didn't resist, and did't take any swings at the cops.

Might be a lesson to be learned there. ( Well, not that it'll do Mr King any good now )

Folks, this is the reason there is absolutely no point in trying to have a civil conversation with this man on the subject of human rights.

Was it right there between the 13th and 21st hits the cops laid on him? I swear if you look real close, you can almost see the city being destroyed because Mr. King tried to crawl under a car to get away from a beating.

It's sad. Nobody should die alone. Although the coroner's report isn't in yet, it looks like an accident. To die from something so preventable as swimming alone.

King didn't cause the riots. As I recall he made an appeal on the news to get it to stop. I think he was someone who was caught up in events, no matter how he got involved.

The leaps and bounds you cowards take, in order to

A - avoid dealing with the basic, straight forward question I asked, and...

B - dream up ways of projecting your delusional, factless view of me and carry out the character assassination of those with whom you disagree.

But I guess Mr King DID learn his lesson. Get drunk, drive through city streets at night, at a very high rate of speed, evading the cops and then finally, after being pulled over, act odd, disobey police instructions, get physical w/ cops ,get your ass beaten ( while on video ), eventually win a settlement, get lots of cash, gain 'C' level celeb status and end up on a reality show, waste lots of money on failed 'business ventures', buy a home with a pool, even though you ( apparently ) don't know how to swim.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

The TRUTH is that what CAUSED the L.A. riots was what the POLICE DID, not what King did. King disobeyed the law, for that he should have been arrested and put in jail, tried and convicted if necessary. The police BEAT HIM horribly before he was ever arrested, jailed, tried, convicted. THAT was the wrongness; if he'd just been arrested, or even clubbed a couple of times to subdue him, nothing would have resulted. It was the actions of the police, the fact that it was video taped so people could see what they did, and the fact that they were let off which resulted in riots. Here are the FACTS, in case you forgot them (I know you didn't, I know why you blame King, but here it is anyway):
Quote:

The videotaped footage showed seven officers surrounding the solitary King, with several Los Angeles police officers repeatedly striking a helpless King with their batons while the other officers stood alongside watching the incident, without taking any noticeable action to stop the beating. A portion of this videotaped footage was aired by news agencies around the world, causing public outrage that increased tension between the local African American community and the Los Angeles Police Department, and increased public anger over police brutality, racism and other social inequalities in the city of Los Angeles, California.

Four police officers from the Los Angeles Police Department who took part in the incident were later tried in the Los Angeles County Superior Court for the beating; the case was given a change of venue to Simi Valley, in nearby Ventura County. Three of the police officers were acquitted, and the jury failed to reach a verdict in regards to the fourth police officer. The announcement of the police officers' acquittals subsequently sparked the 1992 Los Angeles riots.Wiki

That you can even attempt to argue that KING was responsible for what resulted shows absolutely and unequivocally that
Quote:

this is the reason there is absolutely no point in trying to have a civil conversation with this man on the subject of human rights.
and also that you have no common sense or concept of decency or law. It is so necessary for you to find King at fault for the riots that you cheerfully ignore all of those--and the facts.

Oh, as to "Why didn't the cops beat the other two folks who were in the car w/ King ?", which apparently is the question you feel nobody has answered, nobody but the cops CAN answer it. We can get snide and say "maybe they were too busy beating up King" or "King pissed them off the most" or WHATEVER, but the question has absolutely no bearing on the fact that it was the police beating King so severely, people seeing what they did, then their being not held responsible which CAUSED the L.A. riots.

ETA: Rodney King was not a nice person when this happened. And he DID call for peace. He had numerous run-ins with the law after that as well. None of that has any bearing on what the police did, and the death of any human being is always sad.

By the way, L.A.'s mayor AND Raptor's "messiah's" dad had something to say on the matter as well:
Quote:

Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley said, "the jury's verdict will not blind us to what we saw on that videotape. The men who beat Rodney King do not deserve to wear the uniform of the L.A.P.D."[30] President George H. W. Bush said, "viewed from outside the trial, it was hard to understand how the verdict could possibly square with the video. Those civil rights leaders with whom I met were stunned. And so was I and so was Barbara and so were my kids."
